Dear ATOT Motorcyclists.. Wear your gear

luckily the filename told me to what it was... I don't have to actually subject myself to the mystery about to unfold.

DAMN! Dude broke his foot off!

It's full leathers for me and usually a helmet (not always if its just a few miles).

Although I don't think I'll be trying any of those stunts on my scooter. 😉

Actually I have no sympathy for stupid riders trying stunts like that on a public road. They do it to themselves...

Another rider I know not too long ago bought a new soft-tail and had his wife on the back (no sissy bar). He came around a corner and grabbed a handfull of throttle and threw it wife off the back. At the same time she grabbed him and pulled him off with her while the bike proceeded to drive its self up the road until it collided with a building and broke up into about a million parts.

Neither one was wearing a helment and he was just in a t-shirt. He got pretty messed up because it broke his nose and banged up his arms pretty bad too. Wife was OK somehow..

And... one time I dumped the bike I had before this one on a railroad crossing that had a rail sticking up about 6 in that just took my front tire. It was night so I didn't see it. Luckily I was wearing a helmet because when I went down, my head hit the pavement hard enough to break it (the helment, not my head).

I also had my thick leather riding jacked on and steel toed boots. The bike drug me about 20 ft and the road carved that boot toe right down to the steel (which would have been my foot had I been wearing anything else). The jacket was pretty mangled but my skin was fine underneath.

I did get some road rash pretty bad on my right knee and lower leg because I was only wearing blue jeans (I wear chaps now) but that healed. Luckily I didn't break anything and was riding again after about 2 months. Oh yeah, I was only going about 25-30 MPH when all this happened.

So yes! Be sure to wear your gear because there are only 2 types of riders in this world:
Those who have been down, and those who are on their way.

How would gear help in preventing that?

Proper motorcycle boots and he wouldn't have lost his foot... that guy will never walk the same again... I honestly dont think the foot was attached to his leg after that.

The right boots and he probably wouldnt have broken it at all.

I doubt he lost the foot. And he'll probably walk without a notiable limp. But that ankle will bother him the rest of his life.

Yep, the most common motorcycle injury is to the lower leg/foot/ankle area. The only reason helmets are focused on so much is ankle/foot injuries are rarely fatal, even if they are debilitating.

This is why over the ankle boots are a wise thing to wear.

anyone in here do stunts with their bikes? I guess it would seem cool to push yourself and your machine to the limits, sort of a thrill, but do you take into account the risks involved?

I don't go anywhere without the proper riding gear. I know a bike is more dangerous than a car so I do all I can to minimize the risks.

guy was simply stupid, no amount of safety gear would have prevented that other than acting smarter 🙁

not really. gear can do alot to save your skin (and bones). i'm no stunter, but c'mon, we can't even see what happened from the video. the same injury could have happened if he was driving down the road and a car pulled in front of him. cruising or stunting, you need to wear your gear.

now i feel like shopping for some dedicated riding boots...

If he had proper riding boots that go over the ankle, it still would have broke, but it would not have torn so badly. That extra thick leather boot really can help hold things together.
