"Dear ATi,..."

Dear ATi,

I am dissatisfied with your products in practice. I have had personal experience of three of your graphics cards, and read several other users' experiences with your cards.

A common theme running through these experiences is your failure with drivers and supporting your products adequately. Your Rage Fury Maxx does not work in Windows 2000 (or Linux). On examining your website I was instructed that I could email your staff for information on the position relative to such driver completion. Excuse me?- did you really imagine that I could buy your product under such circumstances?
Neither could I overcome problems with your All-in-Wonder 128 PCI. I had several problems and was initially hopeful after seeing newer drivers posted on the website. However these made things worse. In the end what decided me against your card, returning it for refund was your statement upon asking for technical support that it was estimated it would take 13 days for a (non-automated) response. If your support is so slow as to be this inadequate even before the Christmas rush, the inadequacy must reflect a fault with your attitude and resource allocation. Because you treat users the way you do, I had to return the card for refund as I was not prepared to take the risk that my problems probably wouldn't be solved whilst it being too late to reclaim my money from my supplier. So you lost a sale.
My experience of you is bad enough, but I see nothing encouraging toward your Radeon flagship models either. Problems with the highest quality monitors- trinitrons- glitches with quite normal games and other driver problems, particularly with Windows 2000, lend me no confidence in your company as a whole. The fact that you have a hardware design team capable of novel chips is clearly not enough.
I regret to inform you that I cannot possibly consider your products for myself or any client in whatever role. Until you have a record of passable length behind you of supporting your hardware properly in typical environments, then your products are not merely useless, but worse than useless because of the waste of time they entail.
Yours, disappointed,
Rigoletto.

You should also tell them you're gonna short the stock and pound it to the floor.. thats what I told blockbuster videos..

I find myself agreeing with you
My Radeon 64MB Vivo got resold less than 2 weeks after I got it...

I was not happy with them at all in the drivers department.

Great hardware...IMO the Radeon is the best gfx chip there is right now...but as you said...taht's not enough on it's own....

Unfortunately ATi won't care...they don't need to...their Rage128 series which is pretty well inferior to a TNT2/Voodoo3 in just about every way (much less a GeForce256) kept them at the top for a long time with OEM sales, ATi still tops nVidia in raw money AFAIK....

hehe. let me print this out, i'll bring this to the HQ. it's a 20min drive away for me. 🙂

if only i could get thourgh security. actually, if only i could find the entrance to the premisis, i can't seem to find it from the highway.

Ya...I have a Radeon AIW and it took quite a few tweaks to get it working well, but I had a TNT and Savage4 that never worked right, no matter what I tried to do. I must say that 3dfx has bettr drivers.

I also think ATI knows this is hurting them big time; it actually delayed the release date, right? The product really should not have been released with the then available drivers. The new drivers are supposed to be much improved and solid.

It so hard to find good drivers these days. One of many downfalls of the object-oriented design paradigm...Oh well.

Hmmm. I've been near the Matrox HQ in montreal. The building seems a lot smaller than the ATi, from the Highway that is. Maybe it's just a very long building?

And I can actually see a door on the building! But i still couldn't find a way off the highway, onto the street with the Matrox entrance.

Heh. this is off topic. but Rigoletto wazn't asking a question so screw it.

Well if anyone wants to add their sob stories relevant to my post they are welcome.
PS what is the object oriented design paradigm please?

<< what is the object oriented design paradigm please? >>

This is the very wrong place to ask this question. You will get a lot of half answers and people that think they know a lot. You should go find some books on the subject or ask a professor at a local university maybe. This is a huge topic....

If you are familiar with programming C is not object oriented, Java is OO from the ground up, and C++ is kind of a mixture...

if you aren't familiar with programming then the topic is probably not one you care about it....

Edit: that wasn't meant to sound snobby or anything and there is a possiblity that there are people here who could give you a good explanation, but from the general attitude in here, anyone who's taken their first programming course is going to think they know all there is to know about Object Oriented Design Paradigms. I know some...it's a subject that interests me a lot (OO vs Functional program design specifically) but I don't pretend to think I can encompass the whole topic. And certainly not well in a single post. The OO paradigm is a very fundamental principle in modern computing and at the same time it's a huge topic that is difficult to cover fully....

Oh yes, I remember Object Oriented Programming, but what's it got to do with ATi drivers??! What fool would write drivers with a component unsuited to the specific card? I don't think anyone disputes the saving of time in reusing good components. In a way it's what you do when writing Windows programs in high level languages... you call the component in the compiler that makes a window ever so easy to create. It's not necessary to write new code for windows really is it? Get onto the more interesting stuff like algorithms.

Yeah well if you work there in the summer then you need to make it there by spring and rush that G800 out before its too late! :Q

I've never trusted ATi's drivers, even with the Radeon doing so well. That's one of the reasons why I avoided getting one.

Hate to burst your bubble, but ATI has solved the trinitron monitor problem, you can download the latest patch from a thread at the Rage3D to fix it or simple wait for the next driver release which will also have the fix. As for Win2K support, I cannot comment because I do not use it, but I have yet to encounter a single driver issue using windows 98 in the many months I have had my Radeon. Does the Radeon still have some problems with certain configurations? Yes, but so does every other card in existance. ATI certainly had its problems with its older cards and driver support, but in my experience they have been doing an outstanding job supporting the Radeon. Anyone who is now avoiding the Radeon just because of their past history is simple letting themselves miss out on a great card.

I replaced my GTS with A Radeon 64mb DDR and couldnt be more happier. I have had no problems whatsoever installing or playing games(athlon system). Its 2d/3d is beautiful. I actually ran into more problems with my GTS than I did with the Radeon.

Comp10, you are bursting noone's bubble I assure you. They may or may not have fixed the trinitron problem but the fact is it existed. Further, other users still experience problems with games running on it. But your experience only looks narrow.

Rigoletto I agree that ATi's support and drivers can leave a lot to be desired. However, as soon as you invent something that is everything to everyone, I'm sure you will become quite rich and famous. The point is that no piece of gear is perfect. Hell, look around on these forums and people have problems with floppy drives, for crying out loud. And although I don't have an AIW myself, I'd venture a guess that it is a substantially more complex device. You're deluding yourself if you think ANY manufacturer can anticipate any possible configuration and test for compatibility with those literally billions of combinations.

Another amusing thing is that one person can have NO problems while another person with allegedly identical hardware has nothing but problems. I've always wondered about that......

Ever hear the expression "once bitten, twice shy"? I guess what I'm wondering is if you had such poo poo luck with not just 1, but 2 of their products, why did you buy yet ANOTHER product?

I use a 32 DDr Radeon and love it. I'm not ganno start flaming anyone, ATI *does* have driver problems. But if your like me, its kinda fun to sit and tweak a card until it works right using half ass drivers...🙂 Seriouesly though, I love my ATI, wouldnt trade it for the world.

PS: More happier is not correct English.

OH MAN, do I have a comment about ATI to post here, no time now, must log off, am subscribing to come back later and "give the hammer" to ATI......
