Howard Dean appealed to fellow Democratic presidential candidates Saturday to stop the bitter attack politics that have come to dominate the race for the party's nomination. The race needs "a little character transplant," he said.
"It's not necessary to tear down the other opponents," said Dean, whose front-running campaign has come increasingly under fire from Democratic rivals.

I think that Dean has a point- some of the independent attack ads in Iowa are way over the top, and there's little point in the Dem contenders ripping each other's guts out- try to acknowledge that beating Bush is more important than who gets to try. No point in getting to the final round too battered to win...

well the issue should be about what each candidate has to say about his own politics, not about how much dirt he can dig up on other candidates

Well, running against an incumbent means that it's less about convincing America that you (as the challenger) are better for the job than the incumbent, rather it's more about convincing America to throw the incumbent out. If the dems want to take the White House, they'll have to convince the country that Bush is not doing a good job. With the poll numbers I keep seeing that's going to be a tall order. Although it's still early and the political winds can quickly change direction.

Bolded is very true, but unfortunately once politics enters the equation it seems to blur those lines alot. Someday I hope we get back to issues instead of dirt.

No, I don't think it's increased THAT much, it just may be that we're more intune with it. There have been some really good attack ads over the years. There is a collection of them somewhere, but I'll have to find them again. Also it may just seem worse due to the whole 2000 thing and the bitterness that has followed.

Mud slinging drives people away from voting. Since most people are Democrats and many of them soft Democrats it's mostly them that get driven away. The hard core always votes, so it's best for the Republicans to throw mud.

I think most democrats like most Republicans are more Moderate than those who are in charge if the Political Parties. However to me it seems to a Moderate than Conservatism is more palatable tham Liberalism. If the Republicans would sever their ties to the Rididculous..err..Religious Right they'd probably gain more members than they have now.
