Deals on Mac OS X 10.4 "Tiger"

Man...what's with apple releasing all these wacky decimal point improvements on their OS and charging people for it.
They should like...at least rename it XI before charging people...lol

Heh I find this quote from the link CaptKevMan posted kind of ominous:
Apple is taking a swipe at them by arguing that adding on features is not as good a strategy as building them in -- as Apple has done in Tiger.
lol, they sound EXACTLY like a company I know based in Redmond...lol

Actually, the whole integrated search thing is the same thing that Longhorn is supposed to have, no?

If you're not familiar with the product, or don't have anything to add, why do you find it necessary to crap in this thread?

Apple's numbering convention for OS X has already established that .x revisions are new releases, and .x.x revisions are bug fixes. Sure, it's most likely for marketing purposes (to milk the "X" in OS X for as long as they can, for mindshare), but those in the Mac community know this. It's only mindless Mac-bashing trolls wanting to jump on the baseless "Macs suck" bandwagon who seem to feel it necessary to bring it up over and over again.

For reference, here's a comprehensive list of the 200+ new features in Mac OS X 10.4 "Tiger".

And if you're accusing Apple of copying Microsoft with their "Spotlight" feature...Redmond could only dream of having a UI/feature implementation team as inspired as Apple's. Oh, and Tiger releases in 10 days...when is Longhorn due again?

wow.. fanboy much?

I couldn't justify buying a new OS every time they come out with 1/10th of a new version, regardless of who the producer is.

...and yet again, someone posting without even educating himself about the software. I explained the numbering scheme already.

CaptKevMan's got it right. For the record, OS X 10.3 ("Panther") was released on Oct. 24, 2003. Since then, there have been nine 'point' releases (10.3.1 - 10.3.9), all free. These releases contain bug fixes, security updates and even new versions of Apple's applications (Safari, Mail, etc.). 10.4 is not a point release.

(oh, and the academic discount is definitely the way to go. Make friends with a local college student or professor today! 🙂 )

Absolutely! I'm "between school" right now (haven't quite re-enrolled in online classes), but my wife is a student, so I hopped on that deal (hey...she uses it almost as much as I do...) 😉

First of all Good Deal, and anyone who wants tiger should jump on it. However, I will never understand how Apple gets away with charging for a software update (granted it has some awesome features) when I just paid $2500 for their top of the line laptop. But that's just me. Don't even try and compare this to windows releases, because last time I checked MS didn't have its own brand of PCs. I love how apple users are OK with an OS that includes everything and the kitchen sink, (they even praise it) a closed hardware path (Only Apple can make the Hardware), but PC users get all riled up when MS includes a web browser and media player into software which is tied down to no hardware maunfacturer. Oh and don't even get me started on ITunes + IPod.

It's all about market share, really. Apple really can't be called anti-competitive with only 3-5% (depending on who you believe) of the market. 🙂

That said, Tiger's included with each new Mac after it's released, just like Windows is bundled with new PCs. I'm guessing people buying a top-of-the-line Alienware laptop aren't going to be thrilled to pay for Longhorn when it comes out, but it's the nature of the business. As a professional software developer, I'm kinda glad that my work isn't relegated to being a free bundled addition to someone else's hardware. 😉

Totally agreed. I don't mind paying for tiger when i know it will be totally worth it. Its hard for me to explain, but i don't mind paying for it. First time paying for an OS that wasn't already prebundled.
