I'd just tell him to get a credit card and live on borrowed money.

My wife and I have a friend who poor mouths all the the time, and I mean ALL the time.

Thats your problem right there. Well ... that and the fact you use "poor mouth" as both a noun and a verb in your rant, like its a common term or something.

I'd just tell him to get a credit card and live on borrowed money.

LOL, well played. In fact its probably his fault for spreading his anti-credit disease on to them. Otherwise they would be in debt like normal people

He already tried that.

When he got his income tax return a couple of years ago, he had to pay about $5,000 on a card. After that, I think he is staying away from credit cards.

What "really" ticks me off, the guy and his wife do not know how to manage their money, but in 2011 they got close to $8,000 back in income tax. In a matter of 1 - 2 weeks they were broke and nothing to show for it. They bought a new freezer and fridge, but did not pay their gas hog SUV off. So they are still paying interest when that money could be going to the family.

Poor mouth is a common term.

I bet his wife handles the finances ... I have a few friends this way, and by him saying "I need to see if I have money" that means, I have to ask the wife.

I don't think this means what you think it means.
They still have the appliances, correct?

Poor mouth is a common term

No, it's really not.
It comes from a Gaelic expression -"putting on the poor mouth"-which means to exaggerate the direness of one's situation in order to gain time or favour from creditors.
While it is used, it's not "common" anywhere.

Subtract $5,000 for a credit card bills. So $3,000 for a freezer and fridge aint bad I guess.

No, it's really not.

Maybe not to you, or in your part of the country, but it is a common term here.

Wife stays at home, pops out kids every few years, post stuff on facebook all day, and manages the money.

So they do have something to show for it? Just clearing up your misuse of a real common phrase.
"Nothing to show for it" means they spent their money and have literally "nothing to show for it".

They bought a new fridge and freezer, and new smart phones that worked until the bill came due the next month.

Income > Expense = good, not much need to be done.

Income < Expense = bad, need to increase income and/or reduce expense.

I avoid them whether or not they complain about it. The poor are contagious.

Get new friends.

Upgrade all aspects of your lifestyle when you have money. Why keep your poor-life friends when you've upgraded everything else?

Maybe he likes to "lower-middle-class-trash mouth" his poor friends when they "poor mouth" him.

from what I can gather there are 2 good times to do real vacataions, before kids, and after they leave the nest :p

wife wants to get preggers next year, so we are going tropical for a week before we start tryng, all inclusive is worthless is she can't indulge :D

I'd kill myself if having kids meant I couldn't enjoy my money and time too.

well not ballin but i just have my priorities set the way i want them.

we want my wife to get pregnant over the winter so when we go to aruba she isn't too big yet, but we don't do all inclusives so not too worried about her not being able to drink. but we've been to a lot of places the past few years so this will be nice to get it in before we end up with a kid. luckily both of our parents live near us so when we want to go on vacations later on, we have some place to dump the kid(s) off for a week until they are old enough to enjoy vacations :p.

Sounds like the guy's wife should GET A JOB. And sounds like if they can't feed their kids, they SHOULDN'T BE GOING TO THE MOVIES. And maybe if he has trouble with finance, HE SHOULDN'T BE BUYING NEW CARS.

Fucking financial responsibility...how does it work?

Also, the OP is implying that the guy should get WIC or food stamps so that he'll have enough money left over to go with the OP to the movies?!

Exactly! Us the taxpayers should be footing the bill of their friendship!

It's probably cheaper for her to stay home, especially if she's uneducated/unskilled labor. 3 kids at daycare can suck down a lot of money.

Not going to quote the rest of my responses:

1. 2 people in this thread knew what "poor mouth" was. It is not a common phrase.

2. Buying a new freezer and fridge isn't "nothing to show for it" - if they upgraded old appliances, they could be saving quite a bit of money/month on electricity. It could have potentially been a smart move.

3. Gas hog SUV purchase was dumb. Not to mention, if they are literally that close to the financial ledge, they should sell the second car. Unnecessary expense and frees up both insurance payments and gives a nice chunk of change to pay down other debt/use as cushion.

I have a friend that went through a divorce last year, and constantly complained about not having money. One day, he commented on how he didn't have money for gas to drive to see his kid, and the next week, he had a new iPhone (previously didn't have a smartphone). Some people have unfortunate situations. Others are just plain bad with money. Having a poor friend really isn't a big deal unless they are constantly hinting at or asking for money. I'd help out a friend who has the occassional need (once/year, tops), but if it's a constant need, forget it. I'd loan maybe 1 or 2 friends large sums of money, but those are also the friends that I know for fact have too much pride to not pay me back, and are successful enough that if they are asking for help, they NEED help.
