Same car, same dealership, same mechanic.

My GF didn't refuse the service (rather she didn't say that she WOULDN'T have it done), just that she didn't have time to get all of that done at the time and would bring it back the following week.

Hmmm.....I'm down in Greenville S.C. and we have a "Crown Nissan" dealership. Wonder if they're a new chain in the southeast.

Anyway, my 87 year old grandmother took her honda accord in for an oil change one time and came out $400 poorer for it. I don't know the full details of what happened, all I do know is my Dad went and got her $400 back.

He's a Force Recon Marine with three Purple Hearts, a silver star, and a bronze star from Vietnam, he was also a D.I. down at Paris Island.....he can be quite "persausive" at times.

Heavens forbid that I stereotype, but...

In my experience, women tend to be more negligent about keeping a car maintaned, or taking neccesary repairs at the onset of a problem as opposed to when the issue gets a lot worse. In all likelihood, I am not the only person who has noticed this.

I find that dealers are always more expensive and pushier than regular mechanics. Whenever I call my dear for service, they typically will rattle off what the computer says as far as scheduled maintenance goes. Doesn't put me off in the least, if anything, I am grateful for the reminder.

As far as trying the upsell trick, why not? It wasn't some made up repair. It was scheduled maintenace at a certain mileage interval. The fact that the guy was pushy about it to the point of driving the girl off, either he's a prick or she was feeling sensitive and confused and got a bad vibe.

Obviously I've never had it done there. I don't think they were trying to prey on her because she's a girl, dealerships are just a rip-off.

Yeah, that's a standard thing. I think they offered it to her and she made it sound like they were demanding she get it.

My Acura dealer always makes up stuff to charge me for. And none of it is in the book for the scheduled maintenance. They always tell me, "Oh, Acura updated the scheduled maintenance, you need to do this now too."

I don't think I've ever made it out of there without spending at least $300. I've been charged $200 for changing transmission fluid on a 3 month old transmission (thanks for that one, Acura,) and told my battery was dead twice after they replaced it (how many batteries do they think they I need?)

So they'll rape you if they can get away with it.

You bought one tire? Change 'em in pairs. How can one tire go bad and the other 3 are fine?

You have obviously never done a burn out in a car have you? Or can be a bad alignment, and where is the law saying you have to change them in pairs? If one is good and the other is bad for what ever reason just replace the one. But with your reply you have answered my question. I always wondered how come when I buy a used tire (yes Im that cheap I dont buy new tires plus it saves the land fill and where else can you buy a $100 tire for $25 installed and balanced) why I can find great used tires with 75% tread left, no patches or plugs. Because someone thought if one is bad all others have to be changed :p

Hey if a marker light or headlight goes bad on your car do you go have them replace every single one?

Heh, this sounds like me a couple of months ago... took my Nissan Sentra '05 into the dealership to get the oil changed and they said I was due for my 'major' service and I told them that I just wanted an oil change. They said if I got my oil changed that day, I would just have to bring my car in later for that servicing which would have included an oil change anyways so I would be wasting more money.

Anyways, long story short... I got the 'major' servicing done so that I could get my stupid oil changed and I went home for the 3 hours they said it would take. While I was home, they called me again and said that I needed to get my allignment done, microfilter changed, and to have two nails taken out of two separate tires. This on top of the 'servicing' was gonna cost me close to $500. I just told them take the stupid nails out (I never recalled seeing nails, but I never looked for them either) and went back to pick my car up and paid the stupid $260 it cost to take care of the servicing and nails =p

So I asked them why it felt like every time I took my car in to get an oil change, I was due for some sort of 'servicing' and they answered saying that each time I get a normal oil change it comes with a routine servicing which costs me $50 on average (i use synthetic that I bring in myself by the way and they still charge that much >=I) and that after every 3 'oil changes' I am due for a 'major' servicing and the next scheduled one will set me back close to $400.

Okay that was a long story, but there are some of us that fall for such crock. At least I got a free car wash coupon out of the deal?! Sigh :p

If I change my oil elsewhere, but still bring in my car for the major services.. will my warranty still be covered? Anybody know?

YEs, you are not required to have a dealer service your car - specially not oil changes - for warranty purposes.

If people are so fed up with "getting taken" at the dealerships for things like oil changes or nail removal, or just your basic maint on a car why not take the several hundred dollars your going to spend there and enroll at your community/trade school and take up some auto classes? Depending on what oil you choose a oil change can be less then $10 if you do it yourself and only takes 30 minutes. You would spend more then that at the dealership just waiting for your car to come into the shop and then have the service writer hound you to get other things done. Plus the other stuff you learn can save you time or even your life in an emergency situation. If it is a time factor, it cant be because your sitting there when you can be at home doing it yourself with a nice cup of Joe or case of beer listening to your favorite station. Hell organize a oil changing party with friends and have fun with it taking time to do each others cars while you party it down and get drunk.

And yes you can do all the work yourself like oil changes, tire rotations, brake pad/ shoes and drum/rotor changes, ect yourself or elsewhere BUT you need to hold onto every single reciept you get and dont lose one of them. Keep them all in a safe place till your warranty expires.

Ding ding ding! We have a winnar! When my old car was in an accident me and my dad spent a day driving to junkyards and auto parts stores looking for parts and what not. Then we spent a day tearing the front end apart straightening the frame and radiator by ourselves, changing the headlight mounting assemblies, bumper etc. We spent about 500 bucks and about 20 man hours on parts and labor(and managed to get a new bumper for free with a coat of matching paint on)

That being said I also just swapped out all 4 rotors, pads, calipers and flushed the brake lines of my old car so I could sell it and it cost me MUCH MUCH less than if I went to a dealer/auto service center.

And about dealerships....find someone tough looking to go with if you think you'll be haggled. Or like we do, threaten to call the Ford World HQ for bad customer service, which we've done once before and the dealership was suddenly VERY helpful and friendly.

Do what you gotta do.

Well, if you let them rape you once, twice, and three times, I can guarantee they'll do it a 4th, 5th and 6th time.

Q. Hi, I was looking to find out how much it cost to keep up normal (straight out of the owners manual) service checks on a 2002 Honda Civic. If you could give me a list of check up amounts it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You...

A. I can give you ballpark costs, but since Prices vary and the menu for each service is different from dealer to dealer, there is no way I can be more precise.

Well, every 3,000 miles you'll do an oil and filter change, including top off all fluids. This will run about $35.00 to $45.00.

Every 7,500 miles you'll get another oil and filter change, tire rotation and brake service. That will run about $150.00.

Every 15,000 miles you'll get another oil and filter change, tire rotation, brake service, air, fuel and A/C filters replaced. This will run about $200.00 to $225.00.

Every 30,000 miles you'll get another oil and filter change, tire rotation, brake service, air, fuel and A/C filters replaced. Also, transmission fluid and filter change. Cooling system service, tune-up and brake fluid flush. This service will run about $350.00 to $450.00.

At the 60,000 mile service I would recommend replacing the timing belt and water pump with the regular service. Honda says 110,000 miles for belts, but I have seen them break long before that. Replacing the timing belt with the water pump will run about $350.00.

It would appear the prices are a little high listed here, but it sounds about right for her experience. I honestly believe that women are forced into things they don't need from time to time as far as car repair is concerned.

Hey! Didn't mean anything by it, I was just curious. I don't do burnouts and such and haven't had a car with bad alignment.

If one tire is more worn than the other, then they will rotate at different speeds! Which tire will your speedometer record??? This can also cause major wear on your engine since it will have to compensate for the one tire going faster than the other. Think about your odometer!

j/k :D

that list is overaggressive and unnecessary. I'm not clear what "brake service" every 7.5K miles is. It sure as hell isn't new pads every 7.5K miles.

Many new cars have in tank fuel filters that don't have fixed service intervals. New air/cabin filters every 15K miles is also likely too much, those you can just examine and replace as needed, the car doesn't get damaged from ignoring those.

Most new cars are 100K for coolant flush.

Some service items you pretty much just do as needed, like some filters mentioned above. It's a waste of money to be too aggressive on some things.
