Sorry, I forgot to add which bank I have.....Bank Of America. Also, it might be a Visa thing and not a Bank sponsored freebie.....when was the last time a bank did something for you?

Wow, I'll have to check into this. I have a Bank of America Gold Credit Card.. unfortunately, Sam's Club only takes Discover.

Has anyone attempted to take off the AKAI plate on the front of the TV? I don't want all my friends laughing at me for buying a no-name tv and having to explain everytime it's identical to a $500 Samsung.

well, it's gotten way OT now but I can't resist...

The bad news is twofold:
1. you probably can't get the name plate off without making it look crap.
2. now I (and I suspect many others too) am laughing at you for worrying about what your friends think in this regard.

The good news is folded thrice:
1. the situation will either build your character or instruct you on the nature of friendship and the choosing of friends.
2. your friends may learn a valuable lesson about being duped by advertising into buying only name brand goods
3. you may stand to make some cash at three card monte off your friends if the lesson above completely eludes them.

good luck..
enjoy the TV... the picture is great.

You're absolutely right savagemikel. Screw all my dumba** friends. I have a cool TV and they don't. I still think the TV would look a lot cooler without the AKAI plate though. Has nothing to do with the brand. I'd think the same thing even if it said SONY. That black plate sticking out from the bottom really takes away from the sexiness of the case.

Akai or Samsung who cares about the name. Its not like Samsung product line is highly regarded in quality amoung the AV crowd.

Even if I were overly brand conscious, I still think that silver looks better than black.

I suppose we all have our own tastes, but for me, the black seems better.

I just bought Sony Wega 27FS13-which, of course, is silver. However, I liked the color and the design of the Samsung Flat 27 incher. Aside from the color, the design on the Wega is... ugly IMO.
The only reason that i bought the Wega was that i was able to get it for $450 + tax as it was mentioned in a thread while ago. Yeah, the Samsung one was $450 at BB without the discount, but i went for the discount... more discount the better?!?

OT : Very funny, and creative phrasing.

Anyone have some funky results with the picture going to black and white when switching from an antenna signal to a satelite signal? Kinda strange. Only happens sometimes, and one just needs to switch to an A/V signal, then back to satelite on the coaxial signal to fix it. Funny. Otherwise, I am VERY impressed with this TV.

I am still looking for a deal on the Damn Samsung 32" TSL 3293 or 95hf. Me likes that one. I would get the regular 32 non HDTV but I cant seem to find one anywhere, including samsung's website. Unless my friend can get me the 32XBR450 from sony for $1200 ( he just might be able to), then I am going with the samsung for sure. I like all their Tv's I have seen so far (including the AKAI which is the same thing anyway)

has anyone noticed the imperfections on this AKAI 27" TV? I bought this thing and I have noticed that the colors look blotchy and grainy. My screen saver on my DVD player changes sizes as it scrolls across the screen. The credits at the end of movies are so white bright they are hard to read and the text swells and shrinks as it scrolls up the screen.
I am taking this thing back ASAP

must be your set, on my set, the picture looks exactly like the Samsung....which to me is almost as nice as the Toshiba, which I consider to be at the top of the 27" tv food chain.

Poolshark - sounds like your geometry and convergence are probably off. Someone has mentioned getting the service mode code - fixing those things are the kind of thing you can do in service mode. But dont' go willy-nilly changing things in service mode, else you may make it worse and now know how to get it back. #1 rule for making changes in service mode is to always write down the initial values before changing them, so you can put them back later.

Yup, most likely your settings are off. Do some research on Home Theater type forums. First thing is to turn contrast down to no more then 50%, I would probably turn off Verical Scan modulation as well, you will need to go into the service menu ( press mute, then 1, then 8, then 2 and hit power). Go to where it says SVM and default should be 250 or so, turn it down to 0 and you should be good to go.
I still wish they had this TV in 32", looks like I am going to shell out the $1300 or so on the Smasung TSL3293 HDTV.

I took the AKAI back to Sams and brought home another one just like it .
This one has much better focus and none of those imperfections on the CRT

I used the ovoation Sound and Video DVD on this unit and the picture is so nice now

My old and new settings for those interested in knowing.
make sure you write down your old settings before you tinker

sub bright old 134 now 124
sub contrast old 45 now 31
sub color old 50 now 36
sub tint old 40 now 48

if you try these values make sure you play the tv in standard mode to see the difference

has anyone figured out the benefit of the service menu setting to turn off and on the PIP
I used this feature by enableing it in the service mode to two tuners then push the pip size button while
watching then push the swap button seems to really perform a previous channel but then again it seems to act like the TV has two tuners...

must study this more and to find any benefit this might have

Ok, I bought this TV and am very impressed with it's features and the range of adjustments. However, I just can't get what I'd call a perfect picture out of it (I haven't resorted to using the service menu yet). I would like to know if anyone who has a tuning dvd would like to "rent" it out for a small nominal fee. I've read that they cost around $30 and I just can't justify spending that much on a dvd which I'll only use for 30 minutes. These damned AT hot deals have made me very thrifty ;). Anyway, PM me if you are willing to part with it for a couple days. Thanks.

Sound & Vision Home Theater Tune-Up costs $13 including delivery. Do a google.com search. I don't even own a DVD player and bought it...it's worth it to have it to calibrate when you need to.

Don't expect perfect. You calibrate on DVD to perfection, then put on CNN and it will look a bit dark. I calibrated, then upped contrast by 10 notches or so to resolve the darkness.

Also, you can't get PIP to work. I had a tech here to help with a slight geometry problem. He saw that PIP in the service menu and was as intrigued as we were. He thought it would be hysterical and cool to activate it for me. But apparently it can't be. ONe of the necessary parts is in all the Samsung tvs, apparently, but we're missing one needed for the PIP to work. I'm not a tech so I don't remember which we have and which we lack, but he determined we can't get it.

Be EXTREMELY careful in the service menu, folks.

Some of you have asked about the convergence menu. Unless you are techs (and you aren't because if you were you'd have seen what I am about to say later) you will screw up your set royally.

The convergence adjustments are within the service menu. G2-adjust. Go in there and expect to ruin your set. I have a service manual. They are quite clear that to mess with that menu, you need a variety of equipment and have to follow several steps and "if you do not follow these steps the picture will become abnormal."

Stay away from G2-adjust. If your convergence is off, use your extended warranty (if you don't think you need one search in audioreview.com or hometheaterforum.com on any flat screen television from Sony, Toshiba, Panasonic and you'll see they are all suspect) to get service to come fix it or get it exchanged.

Thanks for the help Ostro, I'll see if I can get it this weekend. Just one more question, does the Sound and Vision Theater Tune Up dvd go into great detail about the service menu settings? I'm thinking that I need to tweak those settings to get my picture adjusted to my likings.

Anyone else's tv do the black and white thing when switching a/v sources? Mine will jump to black and white and make me go through the different sources to get back to color. Actually, last night my dvd using s-video would not display color no matter what I did.
