Government workers don't make nearly as much as people think they do.

I am a GS-13 with CISSP, CCNA, and Brocade certifications and I make about $85k per year. I supervise 14 union employees directly in three separate rating cycles. I am accountable for a metropolitan area network that covers nearly 600 buildings in about 150 square miles, a phone switching infrastructure that services over 20,000 phone lines, and a regional emergency services radio system with over 2,000 handheld, vehicular, and desktop radio systems.

I guarantee you that you'll be hard pressed to find a better deal anywhere on my salary and my responsibilities. There are commercial IT workers that get paid my salary for managing a few Cisco routers in a single building and supervise no one directly.

I love my job, but I really, really dislike politicians.

You're one sample point.
