Got from mail, $19.95/mo for Starter Pak (D/U 256K/128Kbps) when you have
Verizon's local and long-distance services, or $5 increased for each service. :(
Term not mentioned, but guess to be 3 mo, then standard charges apply.

The promotion on their website is $21.95/mo for Choice Pak (D/U 768/128) for
3 mo, regular $34.95, free self-installation and activation. may need 6 mo contract.

Anyone has experience with Verizon Voyager? (It never mentions DSL on their site,
but I bet it is. :D)

If there's *NO* way to get a cable modem, go for DSL. My buddy is stricken with DSL and it was out of service all day Saturday. That just blows!

Have Verizon DSL...been up and fine...DSL has the same problems Cable does honestly...cept that you share cable bandwidth with everyone in your neighborhood.

As for the deals, seem fine to me...but the service is rather sketchy in my area. Their customer service is not too great either. I know more about fixing my DSL bandwidth problems than their CS reps do. Only thing they know how to do is tell you how to unplug your modem and then release and renew if it goes down.

the starter pack D/U 256K/128Kbps isn't the speed you'd want. although @ $20, it's still cheaper than AOL or Earthlink, but i'd rather go for the 1.5Mbps down/128Kbps up for a bit more. Currently @ home, I have Charter Pipeline for $45/mo for 768down/128up. Up speed sucks, but you've gotta go for what's available + within your price range. I wonder if it cost them more to upload than to download. why else would they restrict upload speeds so tightly???

Nothing wrong with that price for dsl... so at the end of the 3 mos its 35 +(10 for not being a verizon long or local customer)=$45 a month?

I've got cable, and last year it would normally be out for about 1 day a month, for either a few hours or all day. The exception was once it was out Monday through Friday. This is Cox in Fairfax, VA. They upgraded the lines recently and it was out off and on for several days. Bandwidth often drops down to about three times what I get on a modem, or about 150k. To ensure that the family does not get out of sorts (4 power users) we keep an extra phone line for the cable outages.
I would have gotten DSL but I'm 2,000 feet to far too be qualified.

I think it depends on your area and provider, I have had Qwest DSL for almost a year and it has been down once, on the other hand I used to have cable and it was down at least once every two weeks for several hours at a time.
DSL rules !!(at least where I live)

I've had the verizon dsl for about a year and a half. I'm a block from the switching station so my speeds have been insanely fast. Also its never been down when I've been using it. Your speed all depends on how far you are from the switching station. If you're a mile or two away you will see much slower speeds then if you lived next to it.

I have verizon dsl at home in plano, tx. It goes down for a short time almost every few days. Sometimes it goes down for hours at a time. I hate it, but there's nothing better here.

i think this is a pretty hot deal. i was confused at first reading the post. but there are 2 deals here to me at least.
#1 - Choice Pak $19.99/month for 3 months (normally $34.95) Speed = 768 Kbps/128 Kbps
#2 - Voyager Starter Park $19.95 (normal price) Speed = 256 Kbps/128 Kbps

Without a 6 month contract, Verizon charges you $50 to self install or $100 for pro install.
Possible $50 modem deposit.
Yes it costs more if you are not with verizon local AND long distance, but due to a hotdeal found here a few months ago, i don't even use a normal LD provider.

For me, the starter pak is perfect. i know it's only 256k but with my free isps, it's at least 6-8 times faster download speed for me.

Thank you very much for posting this deal as I knew I couldn't afford normal broadband access.

Can someone tell me what speeds a cable modem gets? I know it varies as more people on your street use it, but what is optimal?

something seems odd here. i don't think this is for normal home or business usage. when i go to check availability, it asks for property name (not address or city) and state. leaving that blank and just picking my state gives really weird results. like if a building is wired, you can tap into that connection.

I just called Verizon. They said that this service is only good for qualified multi-unit buildings. It is not available for single residences.:(

I signed up w/ Bell Atlantic right be for they changed names a couple of years ago. I'm paying $39.95 but I think I'm still on a old plan that caps me at 640 kps.

It's fairly reliable. I'm down maybe one day every 4-5 months, but it's usually the entire day. But I blame that one the crapy service here in Philly. Shaorinor's right, their CS isn't the greatest. I have a router set-up, and they won't help me b/c it's not their equipment. So I basically have to lie when I call. But everytime I've had a problem it's been on their side.

Paying $35-$45 isn't a bad deal for 768kp, since you get the modem for free. Heck, I even think the $19.95 Starter Pak is a good deal depending on your needs. Not having to dail-up and being able to share my connection is a great convenience.

$45 for the 768? Where do you live? Mine is $39 for the 512k....the 768 is like 59 or something here. (central pa)

Verizon Sucks.
I order my DSL in Nov. and they gave me a Dec. installation date. I call them the day after that date and they said they would check on it and give me a call back. Well, they didn't call. I called back a week later and they said they will call me back again. 2 weeks later and I got a call from them. They said that DSL isn't available in my area. I told them that I had DSL from Earthlink using Verizon before. They said the call the ISP, which is them. How stupid is that. I said forget it.

Have you guys seen the AT&T broadband commercials dissing DSL. I guess it's really true.

"I wonder if it cost them more to upload than to download. why else would they restrict upload speeds so tightly???"

Very simple.

To keep people from running servers at home and saturating their network.

well, this is a little too simplistic. actually, most residential customers don't need upload bandwidth, but business DSL customers, serving website do, and pay a premium for it. so SDSL (symmetric) as opposed to ADSL (assymmetric) is what you want if you are serving. why give people upload bandwidth when most wouldn't use it and those who would would be most likely serve pron, MP3, warez, etc?

I've had Verizon DSl for over a year near Philly and overrall it's been great. It's never really "down," once in a great while, and then only for a short time (less than half an hour). And those times may even be because of my router. I knwo I pay $40 bucks for their entry level home DSL, but to tell you the truth I haven't even paid attention to the speed. Way fast for both upload and downloads, the only time I see a slowdown is if both my roommates and I are downloading off Morpheus at the same time.

Getting the service activated was a real bitch if I remember, btu other than that, no problems.

Verizon rocks (sorta)
It took them 2 weeks after I had it install to get it working properly (they ended up swapping out a bad card at the CO). But since then, it's been up rock solid for almost a year. I had cable before that and even though the download speed was insane when you have the full pipe, it sucked between 6-11pm when folks get home. I live in a neighborhood with lots of techies so I think they are all on the modem cable thing. I played online games (CS) and the ping was unplayable. Verizon DSL is stable throughout the day for me now. The only thing I miss is cable used to put me on a static IP whereas DSL IP changes every couple weeks or so. Makes it kinda hard to host a home ftp/web site but yes I know, there are ways of working around it if you throw some $$$ at it.

I've had Verizon DSL for over a year now and it's been pretty good. Aside from the initial installation problems, and very rare instances of not being able to connect, I've had no problems. I would recommend it. I would think that now they are more efficient when it comes to the installation process, so it should go more smoothly than it did for me. At least I hope.
