Ugly? Depends on your point of view
Huge? Not compared to the SLR cameras, which this camera takes pictures almost as good as.

I do not own the camera, but did borrow one for a week. VERY NICE! This camera was great to use. I didn't have enough time to play with everything, but it was very fun to use. It is a little larger than most, but worth it. And memory cards are coming down in price.

I bought this camera over a year back and I have to say that I am very pleased with it. I read reviews of digital cameras for months until I decided on this model. This takes absolutely gorgeous photographs and is very well built. I like the battery life on it. I usually go on trips for 1-2 weeks without recharging the battery and it doesnt run out.
Memory sticks are cheap now, you can get a 128 mb for like 40 -50 dollars or so. They are still more expensive than the compact flash or smart media but since you can reuse them, it really doesnt matter.
I dont think Ill be buying any other dig camera for a while until they come out with something extravagant or that justifies buying a new model.

For those of you considering this camera, these are some of the differences between it and it's replacement, the F717:

F717 supports new Memory Stick Pro format, with up to 1 Gig capacity.
F717 adds an ISO 800 setting. (F707 has ISO 100, 200, and 400)
F717 has a histogram display, F707 does not.
MPEG movie format was improved -- no longer limited to 15 secs + some quality differences.
Supplied memory sitck on F717 is 32 MB vs. 16 MB on F707
Flash shoe on F717 is a hot shoe (works with non-Sony flashes), vs. proprietary cold shoe on F707.

FWIW, I'm holding out for a good deal on the F717.

If anyone sees one, please let me know.

Not enough of a difference imho to make me want to sell my f707. Thing takes stellar pictures (little bit too tweaked on the red side but that's okay).

The only thing on tha list that makes me concerned a bit is the 1 gig stick limit. The pro sticks are supposed to be considerably more expensive too.

ISO 800 is a joke, the goal is to use as low an ISO as possible in order to reduce graniness. I use 100 almost exclusively and it works great.

MPEG movie mode is only limited to the size of the stick with the f707. Quality may be better with the f717, but how much?

is there no way that the f707 can support the new memory stick pro format? maybe a camera firmware flash or something?

I have a 707 and the only thing I regret not having is the manual zoom ring. And maybe the slightly quicker focusing and recording on the new 717.

For the memory sticks issue, shortly we will be able to buy 128mb sticks for about $15 a pop or less.

"Available at retail in April, 256MB, 512MB and 1GB Memory Stick PRO media will sell for about $190, $440 and $880, respectively." - taken from dpreview.com.

Way too expensive IMHO. :Q Getting the f707 and using multiple mem sticks seems like the way to go. Especially since prices for mem sticks will drop (some more?!) once the MS Pro format comes in April.

I'm sorry enough to have missed the deal that I registered just to complain. =)

But to answer your question, no.. Sony missed the boat so many times after promising to increase Mem Stick capacity that they eventually gave up and made a hack. The mem stick pro actually has twice as many input pins as the other; I'll bet you it's just two sticks attached together. Actually, there's another memory stick upgrade that actually IS two half-size sticks attached together. It's being marketed by sony as a high capacity card for 707 users, but it has a little switch you toggle with your thumb to flip between the two cards inside the card. Facinating, wot?

that just seems a bit retarded to me. why would i want to pay $110 for the new card with a switch, when i will prob be able to buy at least 4 128MB mem sticks for the same price??? it's not like it saves me any effort either. i still have to take it out and switch it to access the other 128MB.

again, retarded. try harder sony. :frown:

$880 for a Memory Stick! :Q

When memory is more than the camera, you know something's wrong....
