ThisIsMatt, you think you said "Wrong" enough times? A little subtlety never hurt. ;-)

Maxtor and Western Digital are suppose to have a 1 year warranty now for retail drives. (Yes, my understanding about the WD SE is a 3 year warranty.) Yes, Maxtor's policy was suppose to start October 1st.

I was thinking that maybe the Ultra Series would be like the SE series in regards to warranty. If not, I am guessing Maxtor will back-track on the 1 year warranty for their 8MB cache Ultra Series. After all, they have to compete with the others, like WD's SE 3 year warranty.

Anyway, I have not seen a Maxtor 8MB cache drive with a one year warranty yet. They all have a 3 year warranty. They must still have a lot of drives to get rid of.

I am guessing the drives people get from Outpost will have a 3 year warranty. (Believe it or not, I just now went and started reading the rest of the threads to see if and what people were getting.)

Try and be a little more subtle next time. After all, there was no way you could have known for sure what warranty those drives would have, which were at Outpost.com. (Every one of those drives in the store had a 3 year warranty.) Of course, 'technically', you are correct, but every 8MB cahce drive so far has still had a 3 year warranty. Many of the 2MB cache drives with a 3 year warranty are still in the retail channel, also.

Hopefully, people will continue to get 3 year warranties for awhile.

Most of the Hard drive manufacture change their warranty to 1 year instead of 3 year from oct of 2002, but it said clearly on the box it has 3 year warranty, am I able to argue with them?

Got mine today! :D

3yr. Warranty on the box. Fingers crossed on the rebate, sure is a messy one. However I've averaged over 95% on rebates from deals here.

As mentioned above, send BOTH rebates, ORIG UPC, copy of reciept, rebate reciept to the $50 rebate address and cross our fingers, hehehe.

I'm using mine now. The spindle motor may be quiet but the seek actuator has quite a rattle, much more so than the WD400BB it replaced. It's quite annoying actually, although I'll probably get used to it.

For some reason maxtor can't seem to make a quiet drive.

Well......at least not an 80 gig one. My D740x was just as loud as this new one, yet oddly, the cheapo 30 gig one I bought is almost silent when reading/writing. I Just don't get it.

IBM have a utility for some of their drives that allow you to adjust noise levels at the expense of performance. (Unfortunately it doesn't increase reliability :)). I wonder if Maxtor has something similar.

I purchased this HD at Frys on 11/29 and sent it both rebates to the $50 address. I check the status on rebateshq.com today and got the following message:

Rebate: $50.00 Rebate Check.
Rebate Information For: XXXXXXXXXXXXX
Promotion: Purchase Maxtor 80GB 7200 RPM Ultra Series Hard Drive at Fry's Electronics or Outpost.com only
Submission Type: MAIL
Date Received: 12-13-2002
Status: Invalid
Status Detail: We apologize for the misunderstanding, but your rebate is invalid because the store you purchased this product from does not honor this particular promotion. A postcard acknowledging your invalid reason will be mailed to you.

What the heck are they talking about? Did anyone get this? Does anyone have the rebate center number so I can call and clear this up?

rebateHQ.com (866-379-0229), don't purch any numbers just let the recorded message run until you are connected to a CSR. Let us know what happens with your rebate.

Thanks for the help. They validated my $50 rebate, but I have to resubmit my $30 rebate. They said that I was suppose to send in to different places.

the $50 rebate and $30 rebate both had the EXACT same PO Box and city state address. How can you re-submit your rebate if you sent the original UPC in the first envelope?

I mailed both the $50 and $30 in the same evelope, we'll see what happens. If they don't honor it, can you dispute that amount on your CC?

If Fry's does not honor my rebates, I will go the Fry's and demand that they credit me with the rebate amounts.
It was Fry's advertised price and they have to make good on their prices otherwise they could be sued for false advertising.
I t was also their sales people who instructed me to send both rebates in one envelope.

Right now, my rebates have not yet showed up at rebateshq.

They went to the same address, but to different departments (different number code in the name section of the address).
I guess the people responsible for processing the $50 rebate are too damn lazy to take the rebates to the people that process the $30 one.

Ok, here's my rebate story. Maybe it'll help others.

So I get my hard drive and the following monday, I call the 1-888 number on the rebate sheet and ask the guy what I should do about the one UPC thing. The guy at the rebate HQ says that I should "send the original to one address, and send a photocopy to the other". I specifically asked him if I should send everything in one envelope instead, and the guy emphatically said "no, do what I said before". So I did. I also sent a letter to the 2nd address with the photocopy explaining what I did. I figured since each rebate also had their own separate original rebate receipt that wasn't photocopied, it would work out.

A couple of days later, I was back in Fry's returning something. This is the PALO ALTO Fry's btw. I asked the lady that was helping me about the maxtor HD rebate, just to see if she agreed with what I did. She didn't know so she walked me to customer service. Two people there weren't sure either. I was there for about 1/2 hour now, and the whole time I was *completely* pleasant, laughing and smiling the whole time. (I was also sorta flirting with the original girl that was helping me-what a cuttie!). Anyways, finally the assistant manager, who was in the background the whole time listening in to our discussion, comes up and basically starts yelling at me out of the blue! I couldn't believe what she was doing and I was stunned for a minute. ( In case you go there, the asst. manager is this LARGE African-American lady-you can't miss her) She was accusing me of wasting her time, her employees' time, and basically trying to pull a fast one on them! She also showed me an email from the Fry's HQ that stated both rebates should be sent in the same envelope with a photocopy of the UPC along with the original UPC and that all customers should be told this info at the time of purchase. I pointed out that that info wasn't on the rebate form and wasn't ever told to me in any way. I then told her what the rebate people told me and asked her what I should do. She basically said it wasn't their problem and walked away. The two other Fry's employees and I just stood there, kinda stunned. I loudly thanked both of THEM for being so polite while helping me and said something like, "too bad not everyone here is as nice and helpful as you guys" and then left.

Very annoying experience. I got so frustrated, that I forgot to ask the cute girl for her #! :frown:

I'm going to be calling the rebate HQ again soon and see what they say.

I will never EVER buy anything that has TWO rebates again! I try and steer away from anything with rebates period. They just aren't worth the hassle.

Ryoga:

Sorry to hear about your experience. I also bought mine at the Palo Alto Fry's. I mentioned earlier in the thread that my rebate status is not yet posted, but i won't be surprised if one of my rebates will be 'invalid'. Most likely the $30 will be ok and the $50 will be denied. What i will do is call up rebateshq again, and ask them to validate both. They will usually approve the denied rebate once you tell your story.

Yeah, customer service at the Palo Alto Fry's needs a lot of work. More often than not, only 2-3 registers are open at a given time (there are around 40 registers available) and some customer reps are outrightly rude. Good luck and keep us posted.

PS: Did you ask for a copy of that email from Fry's HQ stating that the rebates should be sent in using one envelope. If so, please post it. That would helpful. Thanks.

Yup, I DID in fact ask for a copy of the email and the assist. manager quickly snatched the paper away from me and said "NO. This is an official email that can't be given away." The thing about that email, like I said in my previous post, was that it said we needed to send a COPY of the sUPC along with the original in the same envelope. Who here knew to do that?! Knowing how annoyingly strict these rebate dept. are, they might cancel our rebates because of this.

About those registers, whenever I go there, usually about 1/2 those registers are going (about 20 of them). But during that black Friday sale, they said they messed up on their staff scheduling so only about 2-3 registers were going from 7 am - 10 am which caused the 3 hour line! Stupid Fry's. I bet it was probably that assist. managers fault too! :D

I rang Outpost at the time and was told by them to send both rebates and proof to the $50 rebate address. I was told that the rebate people had been made aware of the situation and that this would be OK. Of course, I could have been fed BS too!

All right, here's a small update. I called the rebate 1-800 number AGAIN and the guy I talked to EMPHATICALLY said that you needed to send both rebates to the two separate addresses. I told him that's not what the Fry's people said, but he stuck to his guns. For my sake, I hope he's right. Actually, I hope it doesn't matter how you sent it as long as we all get our money!
