SUPERBIT DVD's use to be in the low $20 range. Yesterday I noticed at a local BB they were all priced at $9.99 with a wider selection than previous.

More info on SUPERBIT here.

A list of a few of the titles are on the right side of page.

Another linky

9/6/05 edit: DEAL DEAD, prices back up to $23.95 for most SuperBit DVD's.

They have been $9.99 for well over a year. It's finding them that's the hard part.

Another place to find cheap Superbits is CD-WOW. They might say "Region 3" but since Superbits are multiregion it doesn't matter- they will play fine on R1 machines.

CD-Wow also has Free Shipping and a $2 off link which is easy to Google.

I was at BB today & they actually had a pretty decent selection. Some of the movies I saw there were:

MIB
MIB II
Underworld
Snatch
Bad Boys II
Cirque de Soleil
Legends of the Fall
Blackhawk Down
Labrynth

There were probably 5 - 6 other titles that I don't remember the names of as well. I was shocked to see them so cheap. They had 2 racks for the Superbit collection at the BB in Union City, CA.

In alot of comparison cases, yes they do tend to look better. The Fifth Element got a boost in video quality with the Superbit. Some superbits will provide better image quality, but I won't say they all will.

Also, the way Sony releases their movies is that the non superbit editions only have Dolby Digital soundtracks, while the Superbits have Dolby Digital AND DTS soundtracks. In the home theater world, DTS is considered by many the superior soundtrack choice, I won't get into it here, if your interested check out some Home Theater sites.

The way Sony does the Superbits is that they only use the disc for the feature presentation, no extras. This method allows for a theoretical (perhaps actual) higher bandwidth for the feature presentation to strut its stuff, thus increasing its AV qualities.

my friend got the Superbit version of Spiderman 2 and I had the original version, and they looked practically the same...

Just wait until HD DVD comes to market unless you really want the movie now.

I'm still hoping for a comprimise between the HD-DVD and Blu Ray camps. I want a single unifed format instead of two competing formats. I might be an early adopter of both.

HD-DVD - I'm excited for "Resistence is futile" as a launch title (Star Trek: First Contact). Plus others.

Blu Ray - I'm excited for many things.

Unfortunately, that looks like it won't happen

just like how they got the + and - straight..

altho, i'd almost bet that within 2-3 years of the release, prices will be cheap enough for a machine to have both blue-ray and hd-dvd capabilities. but then again, i'm so far on the other side of hte HD revolution, that big freakin deal. guess having xbox360 and ps3 should cover it right? i hope anyway...

It seems like a marketing gimmick to me as well. The biggest beef I have with Superbit is this:

They claim that superbit titles have much more room on the DVD dedicated to video. So why not post some side by side screenshots so that we can compare the two? I poked around on sony's site a bit, went into the "What is Superbit?" section and didn't see any screenshots. Saw a nice little pie graph showing you how much more room there is for that sweet succulent video, but no screenshots. For the life of me I cannot think of any good reason why a company trying to tout the benefits of Superbit would not have side by side comparisons unless the difference is NOT that dramatic.

Then again, maybe they do have side by side screenshots somewhere on their site. I would be much abliged if anyone could point me in their general direction.

Having seen a couple of Superbit movies myself, I will say that it really depends on the movie. Sometimes the video quality will be the same, sometimes it will appear to be better.

For those of us who really appreciate the higher quality audio, there is one major advantage in buying Superbit movies. That is, most of them offer DTS Sound, versus just the Dolby Digital 5.1.

For those of you who know what DTS is, you can appreciate this additional feature. If you don't, you can read about it here: http://www.dts.com/

In a nutshell, DTS Sound offers a more distinct & precise sound per audio channel. So, for $9.99, you may get the same video quality for the same movie, but much improved audio. To me, that's a darn good deal, especially if you have a Home Theatre.

Here's a review of the Fifth Element Superbit release. IMO, the differences are too subtle to warrant buying the movie again if I already own it. However, if I don't own the movie yet, I'd go with the Superbit version.

I bought Spiderman yesterday. 🙂

Superbit Main Page

there are side by sides on thedigitalbits.com

there is a difference, theres a problem with many movies being starved for bitrate these days with all the special features and altnernate audio tracks crammed onto the disc. that being said u wont notice on a 27" tv. on bigger tvs with progressive output dvd yea u will. the problem with superbit dvds is that they should frankly be the regular releases. special features should be included on a second disc as they are with many decent releases that don't get the label of superbit but basically do the same thing.

thanks! picked up Snatch, which also includes the special featires on a second disc

Does anyone have a copy of this ad? I was at my local Best Buy and none of the Superbits were on sale.

They werent labeled as on sale but they ring up as $9.99

I am aware that you can find side by sides on the internet but why isn't the company promoting superbit doing anything to actually SHOW the difference?

I picked up these two Superbit titles:
Airforce One
Legends of the Fall

I am using an Upconverter DVD Player with an HD TV.
The Superbit DVD's appear to be sharper than standard and I always check to make sure audio is set for Digital Theatre Sound (DTS). Some titles DTS is the default, but for most it is Dolby Digital 5.1.

Tonight we watched Legends of the Fall for the second time. A very tragic movie, but an excellent story line. I am surprised that I never heard much about it when it came out in 1994. Also has an excellent sound track, parts sound similar to Dance with Wolves,

In addition to these titles listed by djnsmith7

MIB
MIB II
Underworld
Snatch
Bad Boys II
Cirque de Soleil
Legends of the Fall
Blackhawk Down
Labrynth

Others include:
Vertical Limit
Airforce One
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
Just found a 3 page list:
Page 1
Page 2
Page 3

Total of 58 titles. I think BB carries a lot of these but not all.

In case anyone is interested, this site has some good comparison screenshots of Superbit DVDs and their "normal" counterparts. The differences are subtle at best (you'll need a well-trained eye and good video equipment to notice), but they are there.
