**WARNING***

I Placed an order at "A Matter of Fax" for the Epson 860 Printer 3 days ago. I intended to use the Epson Rebate for this

What I received was a refurbished unit - :disgust:
In fact, they even put a VERY aggressive tape over the refurbished printing on the box to hide this! The web site AND invoice did not reflect this.

DO NOT ORDER ANYTHING FROM THEM!

Yeah.....the rebate's no good for a refurbished unit, I'd bet. I got my 860 at office max about 6 weeks ago for 30 after rebate....haven't got the rebate yet but expect it in the next couple of weeks. The Epson 860 is a fantastic printer...scanned some of my daughter's wedding pictures and printed them on photo paper....couldn't tell the difference between the print and origonal.

Just recieved the rebate check.......maybe you guys yelling at them made them decide to honor rebates from Office Max

Netma, I bought this at OfficeMax as well. I sent in the rebate form, but I just received it back stating that OfficeMax was not a valid retailer for this promotion. It gives me OfficeMax's 1-800 number to "discuss it with them." Did you receive your rebate check?

I believe OM's price was _after_ the rebate. OM does this kind of stuff, they receive the rebate from the manufacturer as a whole and reflect it to their price.

I bought my 860 from ONVIA and received the rebate pretty fast :)

jjthejetplane,
No I haven't received the rebate, nor have I had any other response. Now you've got me worried.

macmedia:

Simply dispute the charge with your credit card company. Make a copy of the web page and then dispute that the item shipped (refurbished) is not the item ordered (new).

JJtheJetPlane:

You need to contact Epson's Consumer Relations department. I heard about this problem after I purchased my printer several months back from OM. Epson confirmed that OM purchase was not valid for rebate. However, after many discussions, and me reiterating over and over that their rebate offer did not state that OM purchase was not valid for rebate, and that me as a consumer had no means to know that it wasn't, then clearly Epson must honor the rebate. I got my check in about three days direct from Epson.

I ordered one from Onvia last week... It hasn't shipped yet, but the web page still shows them in stock. Should I be getting worried?

On the Epson 860 rebate-I did the same deal-bought it at OM for $79.99 .I called Epson Consumer Relations- was very emphatic that Office Max did not state in their ad or on the shelf promo tag that this was an INSTANT REBATE.(see apparently they have an arrangement with Epson to give you the $50. rebate on the spot, thus saving on paperwork(?) )All the OM sale info stated was that $79.99 was the sale price-no ref. to REBATE.
So if that is the way you bought your Epson-thinking you were going to get another rebate-it won't work unless you do THIS:Get the number to Epson consumer relations( I cannot remember where I got the # butI think if you call the 800# and tell them you want corporate they will give you a nontollfree#)
Then call and explain about buying the printer and how you absolutely saw it NOWHERE that you were getting the rebate at point of purchase.Be nice but explain to them how upset you are, yada yada and misrepresentation and that you were expecting your rebate. The CSR gave me an addie and told me to mail in the UPC(there are several on the box actually) and a copy of my receipt directly to her.In about 10 days I received a $50. check from them.Otherwise you are NOT going to get it.
And BTW-the 860 is a SUPERIOR printer!I love this printer.
I get great ink prices at 123ink.com (free shipping over $30.) I have the Epson 660 also-the blacks are slightly different but they both take the same color cartridge.I got a boatload of ink shipped free for only about $36.00.

Hey Bob61 - I do plan to contest the charge on my credit card

More info on the transaction:
I immediately called A Matter of Fax - the salesperson was a joke - at first he thought I wanted to buy another printer and was nice to me. As soon as he realized that I wanted to return the printer, he was VERY nasty and told me to call their Customer support line (not a toll free line).

The customer support line has been continuously busy. What a scam!

I called Epson's customer support line and told them my woes and how the store is selling Refurbished merchandise as New. They were sympathetic AND told me Refurbished printers DO qualify for the rebate. Unfortunately for me, A Matter of Fax removed ALL bar codes from the package. The support person told me (unbelievably) to WRITE the UPC code down on a separate piece of paper and submit it (he gave me the code).

I'm still returning the printer because my principles say that this retailer sucks and should not get my business anyway.

OMG! what a shady place! a 25% restocking fee w/a $50.00 minimum?!? I guess you'd be crazy to buy anything worth 50bux from them anyway. wow...:(

PS. Really, those of you that have had bad experiences w/A Matter of Fax, go and rate them at Resellerratings.com or BizRate.com... companies like this will never learn unless they get a taste of what's coming to them.

Thanks Fraggle for the links - I wish I known about them - one had a 1.2 dismal rating for Matter of Fax - one of the lowest!!

Thanks kamidane for the info on the OM rebate mess. I got back a letter two weeks ago saying they wouldn't honor the rebate because I got it at Office Max. I was so bummed out, especially when I called the number on my rejection letter and it wasn't even in service! Got in contact with Epson today and they asked me to fax them my forms. What luck! I picked up the Sharp fax machine for $35 not too long ago and had been itching to test it out! Got the stuff faxed and expect to have my rebate check mailed shortly. Deal had...killed...and revived!!

Thanks again!

Steve0 -

Where in Newark you at? I used to live there 25 years ago. Only addresses I rememeber are 296 N 10th St. and 88 N. 9th St. Went to St Francis Xavier school right off Bloomfield Ave across from the stadium (if it's still there), later on went to Immaculate Conception HS in Montclair then James Caldwell HS in West Caldwell.

Well the printer I ordered from Onvia last week is now in limbo... it shows up as still "In process" in my order status, but as a discontinued item elsewhere on their web site.:|
