good price, but LCD prices drop really slowly. I wish it's like CPU's price trend.

$50 off also works on other items in Dell home section (not only system, but also software and peripherals). But the total needs to be greater than $500 I believe.

I jumped on this deal Friday. I ended up buying the NEC 17", but thought long and hard about switching to the Planar (still am :))! I asked some buddies what they would do by sending them to a link I put together explaining my dilemma ... I'd love to hear what you guys think!

BTW, I looked at Sceptre in detail and ended up dtaying clear of them because of these two factors:

1) 1 year "limited" warranty
2) Will not replace monitors due to dead pixels

Planar has an awesome return policy. Will mail a replacement 2 day air at their cost!

I'm thinking about getting the NEC 1700v, can you tell me how it is? Any ghosting or other problems? And why you'd want to switch to Planar? Thanks.

I work at compusa and they had an old lcd, a sony pcva-15xd2 that was just sitting around. I talked to my manager and he gave me the beast for $100, but it was a demo and was missing the power adapter, but I just ordered the power adapter from sony. Does anybody know if this is a good lcd? Because I am not sure whether to ebay it off or actually keep it. BTW, i already have a CTX PV505, and it is a really nice lcd, and i am not sure if the sony is good enough to replace it. Let me know your thoughts.

Just an FYI. PC magaizine just put put an issue (maybe most current) with a side by side comparisons of 17" LCD screens. I do not have it in front of me and cannot comment on any particular model, but it would be very good reading for anyone ready to buy a LCD. I remember them reviewing like 15 different brands and they had interesting things to say.

Rad 7 Review: from http://www.pcmag.com/article/0,2997,s=1475&a=21868,00.asp

The KDS Radius Rad-7 has two items no other monitor in this group has: a keyboard and mouse in the same silver and blue color scheme as the display. While the monitor has its shortcomings, it's a good value if you like its styling.

The setup revealed some interesting features. Not only are there no cable covers for this analog-only unit, but the cable is also captive. In addition, the power cable merges with the sync cable at the computer end, eliminating one more cable from the mare's nest that clutters up most desks. Unfortunately, the monitor does not come with any USB ports, which could help even more.

In adjusting the settings for our tests, we found the buttons along the bottom of the panel relatively easy to use, but changing the brightness caused the black level to increase immediately with no improvement for dark-gray shades. As a result, we left the brightness at its minimum setting to provide maximum contrast, which was probably a major factor in the poor brightness measurements.

The front panel has an auto-sync button that worked fairly well, though we had to tweak the timing to eliminate pixel jitter. Color tracking was good, and the screen's brightness appeared fairly uniform, but we saw faint banding on color ramps and more smear than average on moving images. Viewing angles were better than average. Images scaled from lower resolutions showed fairly smooth text and only minimal artifacts on graphics.

The Rad-7 isn't the cheapest monitor in the bunch, but it doesn't perform well enough (or have the extra features) to be counted among the premium products. It's a middle-of-the-pack competitor that stands out by dint of its styling and bundled peripherals. If these factors appeal, you'll certainly be happy with the Rad-7.

<< I'm thinking about getting the NEC 1700v, can you tell me how it is? Any ghosting or other problems? >>

I ordered it Friday and will not get it until Friday. I ordered the LCD1720M!

<< And why you'd want to switch to Planar? Thanks. >>

Call me greedy, but the extra .4" is calling me, it has a contrast ratio of 400:1 (versus 350:1), has a pivotable screen, it's a DVI monitor (versus Analog) and I can grab it for $36 more than the NEC!

Here's an ebates question for you guys: How long does it take for the rebate to show in your acct? I ordered Friday and there's still nothing there!

i ordered the nec 1700v over planar.
i guess it's mainly b/c it's a more well know brand name worldwide.
also, i'm trying to think of a way to get the $50 rebate which unfortunately is only available for fry's, staples, etc.
if rebates works, hey, around $500 is a much better price.

Can anyone make a suggestion of which of these three to get?

I'm interested and they are all in the same ballpark according to price, so any praise or nay's on any of these?

Right now I'm thinking Planar, Rad-7 (KDS), then Sceptre

Thanks for the input.

I went in on a similar Dell deal about six months ago and ordered the 17.4" Planar. I've been *very* happy with the Planar: very fast refreshing (haven't seen any ghosting), nice and bright, very good screen size (although the casing is a bit on the large-ish side), DVI (to go with my AIW Radeon), and a very-handy built-in USB hub. The speakers aren't very good though... so turn them off and use a real pair of speakers instead.

I've bought four Planar's from Dell, three 17.4s inchers and one 15 inch. All displays have been bright and clear and I have yet to notice a dead pixel. Don't buy them for the speakers, though. The speakers on the 17.4 inch model are barely passable and the speakers on the 15 inch are so "tinny" sounding they're actually painful. The displays are great though. IMO

EDIT: LOL. After posting, I see PiSqu. has had the same experience.

I was unable to apply either of the 2 10% off coupons on techbargains because of the auto $50 off coupon. Anyone have a link to a 10% off coupon which allows you to combine? or does anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

It auto adds the $50 off $500+ and then won't let me add the 10% off

Under $400??? Unless you're talking Canadian $$, there are some pretty nice 15" LCDs for under $400. The 15" Planar I picked up from Dell was $328 delivered.
