And yet another answer on the issue:

------- Forwarded message follows -------
From: DELL Canada Online Store <Ca_onlinesales@dell.com>

Date sent: Mon, 07 Apr 2003 22:47:12 (GMT)
Subject: Dell has become aware of a pricing error on our website for our Dell Axim X5 handhelds.

Dear Customer,

We are writing you in regards to your recent online purchase.

Dell has become aware of a pricing error on our website for our Dell
Axim X5 handhelds. The incorrect pricing of $89.00 for the 300MHz
model and $118 for the 400MHz model resulted from a technical issue
with one of our database systems. We endeavor to provide current and
accurate pricing information at all times on our website.
Nevertheless, such errors do occur. The actual pricing for the
300MHz
and 400MHz models is $379 and $549 respectively, exclusive of
shipping
and applicable taxes.

Accordingly, your order and all orders for Dell Axim X5 handhelds
with
incorrect pricing will not be processed.

If you are interested in placing your Dell Axim order with the
correct
pricing, please place a new order on our website at www.dell.ca.

If your credit card has already been charged, we will issue a credit
to your credit card account in the amount of the charge. Please note
that individual bank policies will dictate when this amount is
credited to your account. Dell is not obligated to sell products
based on pricing errors on our website. Dell apologizes for any
inconvenience this pricing error may have caused.

Thank you for your understanding.

I think at least in Quebec, the Office de Protection du Consommateur (Consumer Protection Agency or something like that) would force Dell to sell it for that price, or even cheaper. I checked their website but they're vague about online commerce.

I think the law is they have to give you the item if its price is <10$, and give you a 10$ rebate if it's worth more than 10$. So all you'd get is a 10$ rebate on a 550$ Axim... :p

here's the page about it

People should probably call the customer support number first, then get moved on to the higher up people. Just ask for someone to contact to pursue the matter further, since we're not going to get anywhere on the phone.

It's a 10$ rebate on the corrected price, SpiceDaddy, that would mean we'd get the Axim for 10$ less than the 92/118$ prices!! :D

But anyways, I don't think it's worth it to whine, everyone knew it was a price mistake and it's just not right to have that product at that price.

No no, here's what they say:

"Si l?erreur s?applique à un article dont le prix est supérieur à 10 $, le commerçant devra obligatoirement soustraire un montant de 10 $ sur le prix corrigé."

Which means: ...the merchant will have to substract an amount of 10$ on the corrected price. Corrected price is the real price, not the erronous price. In this case, the corrected price is 550$.

edit- at least that's how I see it, it's not very clear IMO. Either way, Dell isn't even in Quebec, and this might not be applicable to online stores.

Hmmm, I saw it the other way around, espescially that they say in the first sentence "le prix le plus bas prévaut".

Dear Customer,

Dell Canada strives to ensure the most positive Dell experience for each of its customers.
Recently, an error was made on dell.ca that caused the customer experience to be
less positive than we would like.

On the evening of April 4, 2003, we posted pricing for the sale of our Axim X5 handheld
units on our web site that was in error. While the advertised prices for these units
were clear and correct, data entry issues elsewhere on our web site applied a price
to the units that was an obvious error. On the morning of April 5, we discovered
the error and began taking active steps to resolve it. By the morning of April 7,
we were able to resolve the error completely. However, before the error was resolved
completely many of you acted and placed orders.

At Dell Canada, we place the highest priority on customer care and apologize for
any actions that may result in inaccuracies on our web site. As mentioned in our
previous e-mail to you, we regret that we cannot honor the pricing that temporarily
appeared to be available on dell.ca.

However, we do understand that this error may have caused you some inconvenience.
As a result, we would like to make it up to you by presenting you with a goodwill
offer on our Axim X5 handheld units. This goodwill offer provides you
with a $50 reduction off the regular price of $379 for each 300C unit and $150 reduction
off the regular price of $549 for each 400C unit (exclusive of shipping and applicable taxes)
in the event you still wish to place your order.

To receive this time limited offer, please respond to this e-mail by 5 p.m.
on Monday, April 14th and a Dell representative will contact you to book your
Axim purchase under this goodwill offer. (Limit of one unit per original unit
ordered no exceptions. This offer is not combinable with any other discounts or promotions.)

Again, Dell Canada apologizes for any inconvenience caused by this error and looks forward
to your continued support as a Dell customer. If you have any further questions,
please call 1-800-847-4096 or e-mail us at CA_Canadacs@Dell.com .

Best regards,

Frank Fuser
Director, Customer Care

At least they offered some sort of discount to everyone who ordered. The $150 off of the 400mhz model is a pretty nice deal. Too bad I don't have an extra $400 :(

With the exchange rate, the price of the 300 ($ 225 ) is the standard ($224US and a free 64MB CF card).
The 400 is an okay deal ($273 ) compared to the US ($314 US, 64MB CF card, and cradle).

FYI, but you might just try ebay too.
