Especially when you see that twinkle in Al's eye as he's about to gut another beautiful being.

fuck HBO for cancelling a good god damn cock sucking show.

I always thought it was the writer's strike that did it in, but I'm wrong:

It’s been confirmed that HBO offered to greenlight a small six-episode order of the groundbreaking drama but Milch, who has had bad experiences with so-called “short-order renewals,” rejected the offer. “For my part, I did not want to accept a short order. We couldn’t have done the work the way we wanted. I didn’t want to limp home.

So in essence, the reason for Deadwood’s ending seems to be a financial one. Milch is working on a new series for HBO (John from Cincinnati) and, due to that commitment, HBO didn’t believe that he would be able to return to Deadwood for quite awhile, delaying the possible start of a Deadwood season four. Deadwood is an expensive show to shoot and it’s assumed that the cable channel didn’t want to (or couldn’t afford to) pay the actor salaries for months while they waited for production to begin.

It remains my favorite TV series of all time.

I don't really understand HBO...they go to all these lengths and produce some incredible series for a season or two. The acting and production values and incredible...and then they go "oh it's just too expensive" and kill it.

Deadwood.
Rome.
Game of Thrones is said to have insane production costs behind it...so it's probably doomed too.

As the series went on the dialogue got a little too Shakesperian (for lack of a better description) for my taste. Well Shakesperian if Shakespere used the word beautiful being.

Yeah Rome ended way, way to soon. They should have just made it a mini series.

I think most HBO shows go stale after the first or second season anyway.....shit gets boring and repetitive..I think its a good thing if they dont drag it out

Deadwood didnt. But it was killed after 3 seasons so it doesnt matter.
Sports Night was perfect at 2 seasons.
Titus actually started to put out some crappy episodes in the 3rd season.

Wait, those last two arent HBO.
Nevermind.

Six Feet Under was alright but they had plenty of stinkers. 3 good seasons would have been much better than 5 Ok seasons.

I thought the The Sopranos and The Wire were good for their entire run.

Everything looks better in Bluray

Not always. Some of the remasters/transfers are truly terrible.

Also, I bet it's been ironed out by now but some early Blu-ray movies had visible compression artifacts and banding. In many cases, it's sad to say, the DVD versions of movies might be the definitive ones, even with such a low resolution and bitrate.

All newer movies look fantastic in Blu-ray however. I remember watching Avatar and at the very beginning, the 20th Century Fox logo has absolutely NO jagged lines and it blew me away. Never before had I wanted a large screen projector so badly. Home media has finally reached the point that having a 60 inch+ screen doesn't turn the visuals into a disgusting mess.

Does it still suck in blu-ray though? :D

Just kidding. I liked it when it was on but not a real interesting or exciting show, just good characters/actors (mainly just McShane though) and crazy dialogue. Not real memorable or likeable in my opinion. Also they didn't have an ending to the show which is a really big letdown. Sopranos and the Wire are way better.

Deadwood was a decent show, but I don't miss it.

Now Rome, that was a F'ing awesome show that had at least 2 more good seasons left in it. And for the record I don't think Vorenus is dead.

Wikipedia doesn't say anything about the show being based on a book.

A lot of history in that town. And considering that it is one of the legendary Old west towns, it is actually still around, amazingly enough. About 2000 population?

Much of what happened in that series was certainly cobbled together from various historical sources and public records. And I'm sure this, and potentially other novelizations were known by Milch.

perfect description.

Swearengen's dialogue was iambic pentameter for much of the series. At least, that's what I noticed.

awesome, simply awesome show.

(and Shakespeare used "beautiful being" quite often. ...in his Elizabethan tongue, anyway)

I'm thinking the night porter scene in King Lear.

Raylan Givens is easily a direct descendant of Seth Bullock. They even look similar.
