King crab is fucking delicious, but unfortunately also deliciously expensive. It is far and away better than lobster or any other sea bug that I will gladly place in my belly. Finally managed to convince my wife of that fact a few months back when we picked up both king crab and lobster and had them both in one orgasmic meal.

Last time I checked though they were like $18.99/lb at Sams Club, which is a little rich for my blood. Though I still see (mostly Asians for some reason) buying like 10lbs at a time.

That's not a lot by any means, especially when it's so dangerous.

When he disappeared for hours and came back with sunglasses on inside the boat it was rather obvious. The captain is an idiot for not realizing it right then and there.

My parents buy it 15-20 pounds at a time from Costco. That isn't for them to eat though, they sell it at their restaurant.

Not a fan of king crab. It's shell is very hard to break, and the meat is a bit bland. It's a little lighter tasting than shrimp. I'll go through 10 lbs of snow crab in a sitting though :)

You're probably seeing Japanese people buying crab. Seafood is a staple in their area of the world and the US doesn't eat much of it.

You need to cut the king crab shells with a pair of shears before serving, but I do agree with your assessment on the taste. I enjoy it, but would rather have snow or better yet dungeness crab.

Ive ate it before. I didnt ask the "seasonal" pricing at the time. Shit came out to $25/lb at the restaurant.

I used to work out of Kodiak, AK during the heydays of good crabbing 1978-1983. We were rowing out to Near Island to dig clams at low tide. We'd get 100 pounds an hour with one guy digging and the other filling buckets.

One time I rowed over a large King Crab, grabbed him with the oars and tossed him in the boat. I saw 4 boats sink one season with no survivors, so I stayed in the canneries. It was a wild time, a hard drinking town with lots of natural beauty.

I was there when "Spike Walker" wrote his book about the most dangerous job. I worked at and new the people he talked about in the book. Kodiak was a wild place.

This, and I think he is going to learn HARD when he is told why he cant drive the boat again... a nice search would give the new captain a pretty nice stash...

according to Discovery, it pulled in better ratings than the NBA Playoffs did...

You're exactly right. People ate them because they were so god damn poor. Only around 1850's, lobsters were fed to prison inmates and they had an uproar because it was deemed as a 'cruel and unusual punishment.'

Then somehow it started to catch on. And price went up simply due to supply and demand.

I don't get it... so he smelled pot on him and was like "no you can't drive the boat... go out there on deck where there's a thousand ways to kill yourself or those you are working with in a blink of an eye."

If he smelled dope shouldn't he have been like "GET THE FUCK OUT OF HERE" If I was a deckhand and the dude next to me was high or even coming down off a high? Fuck that.
