poll! 🙂

Yes WRC is taken...I think it's World Rally Championships where cars race on rally courses.

Doubt it; actual cost is probably much closer to $300; there is very low overhead on electronics these days. Reason: there are always online retailers willing to sell something for $5 or $10 over wholesale. The other sellers have to cut their prices to keep up.

I just got a $5.61 credit to ebates from Dell for my order. Why would this be? Online it says my order was canceled. I would only get a credit if they took the money out-not if they put it on hold-correct?

To those bickering about law suits, and those who are considering no longer being a Dell customer, I am appalled. Here you have a company who has great prices to begin with on most things, whose customer service is better than most of the other online companies out there, and you're considering dropping them for good as a future vendor? That's ridiculous. I, too got in on this deal; I ordered one and mine was cancelled like everyone elses. But am I mad? Am I going to stop giving Dell my business? No! Yes, they made a mistake. But mistakes happen. Imagine dealing with 100's of orders, entering new items into the database each and every day. Not an easy task by any stretch of the imagination.

Mistakes happen. I don't think it's fair to hold Dell responsible. Dell has in the past been good about such things. Take for example the $22 200GB hard drive. They actually honoured that. However, if they were to sell these Rio's at the price of $80 each they would lose a fortune. Take for example they allowed as few as 100 to be shipped out. They'd be looking at a straight up loss of around 25 *thousand* dollars. And that's just for 100. Consider for a moment if they had honoured every order placed, from reading other's estimates in this thread, ~20,000 orders. They would lose in the range of 5 million dollars.

At any rate, I'm going to continue shopping with Dell as I've never had a problem with them both in business and personal dealings with them. How about cutting some slack here? You guys have never made a mistake in your life and been forgiven? (for the record, i'm not at all religious and do not intend to come across as such).

-Sebastian

P.S. For those who STILL think they can suck some life out of dell in the form of gift certificates, money or products, remember they have a DISCLAIMER. You could go to court, and you could lose too.

I stopped being a dell customer for myself long ago. Their prices on home machines are generally way out of line with what I build them for myself, not to mention that the dell PC box looks like it was dredged out of a swamp. And if I were to ever configure a dell box with how I actually build one (ie, same quality and quantity - provided they even have the components or anything similar available) it generally costs more to upgrade as compared to my actual cost for the item. There is, of course, the occassionally "sale/price mistake" which brings their PCs in line or lower.

I would still recommend their server boxes however. That's a different realm, and a different set of rules apply.

I got a credit from them, too.

I still have yet to be canceled. No email. I checked in the Dell order status page and it says:

Your item(s) is being processed and should ship by the estimated ship date.
Pending 11/3/03

It doesn't matter whether or not you've received a cancellation.
You WON'T be seeing the actual item.
Since they change the product number, there will be no stock under the old number.
Any order that reaches shipment stage will end up being cancelled anyway.
Dell sucks.

Yeah, Dell is going to lose thousands of customers because of this you keep on thinking that. Go ahead and e-mail them too, I'm sure they'll honor the price mistake then

I very much doubt they would have lost a small amount of money if they had honored all of those people that ordered it at that price. Those units retail $350-$400, actual cost for Dell is probably in the neighborhood of $150-$200 if not a bit on the high end. I'm sure all of the folks that complain in this thread will continue to shop at Dell's website even if they say in here that they won't.

if its a $350 item you should try closer to $300

Speaking of high horses...

Now making a statement puts me on a high horse? So what kind of horse do you think these noob bashers are on?

You're absolutely correct on that one - margin for technology-related items is pretty small. For example, on PDAs that sell $700-800 retail, the margin may be at most, $150 for a large corporation. On HP lasers, sometimes it's as small as $30.

Gee - wonder why the HP lasers have such a low margin?

Edit: heck - wonder why printers in general have low to negative margins?

Check the margins on the toner cartridges. (Edit: or ink margins, or whatever they take)

I guess the only loser here is ebates.
They send out credits for the dimention 4600 and rio karma.
I got about $20 out of the whole thing 🙂

Well, I finally recieved my cancellation email. Only took all weekend to get here (as it was cancelled by 5:40 on Friday). Again, oh well.

I probably won't ever buy a Dell product unless it was on sale for a very good price.

I stopped going to CompUSA 5 years ago when the manager tried to tell me that the network switch and cards (a linksys home network in a box kit) was not the same one that they had online for $150 less then the price that the store was selling it for. Even though OfficeMax and OfficeDepot were also selling it for the same price as the one on CompUSA's online store as well. I walked out and across the street to the new OfficeMax that had just opened the week before and picked it up there without any problems at all. I also wrote a nice letter to corporate CompUSA detailing the situation and stating that they just lost a VERY GOOD customer (I spent upwards of $5000 a year there) as well as all my friends, family and my work (yes I was in a position to recommend what retail outlets to use for daily computer consumables and light expenses (anything under $3000 an item)). I have only recently even walked into a CompUSA after I learned that the manager was fired after another customer had complained about him not honoring their price match policy. I still havn't purchased anything from them though, they are still on average 10% higher in price for their products.

Back to the topic at hand, Dell sure did take a while to send me an email... Wonder if they are still debating as to what to do about this. Why else take 2 days before issuing a statement about the orders and then also take another 2 days to get emails out to everyone (unless their customer relations truely have degrated far more then I believed over this last year).

Over the past 2 years, I have ordered from Dell several times. So far, every time I had to call their customer support, besides the usual around-the-world-run-around, their customer service/order info system has always been down. And the order tracking e-mails usually comes after I receive my items if at all. They aren't really taking their time thinking about each email, they are just butt-slow as usual. I just received my cancellation mail on Sunday around 4pm. Sheesh.

Ebates doesn't give you credit unless they get the money from Dell first. So, Dell is the loser.

Actually we are the loser because although ebates will show the credit in your account, when it comes time to issue a check they will tell you that they are removing the Dell credit because the order was pulled(because Dell won't pay).

Ah well

So.... people are ticked that Dell took two days to cancel an order for what everyone knew was a mispriced item to begin with???

There's just no pleasing some people.

Yes, but not until you are supposed to get a check dated February 15, 2004. So it will be a while.

Just got my e-mail tonight:

This is to notify you that, regrettably, we need to cancel your recent order for a Rio Karma MP3 player. Due to our error, the player was shown online at an incorrect price, well below the correct price.

We specifically indicate on our web pages, our catalogues, and in our advertising that Dell cannot be responsible for such errors. In addition, our email documentation provided to customers as they place orders states:

Please note, however, that Dell cannot be responsible for typographical or other errors, and reserves the right to cancel any orders resulting from such errors.

If you paid by credit card, your account has not been charged for this item. If you would like to order the Rio Karma player at the correct price, including a 10% discount that was in effect at the time, you may do so by pointing your browser to <http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/...us&l=en&cs=19&category_id=4000&page=external>, and adding the item to your cart.

We truly value our relationship and reputation with our customers, and we realize the negative impact from these types of errors. Please be assured that we are working hard to try and prevent these problems going forward. We are sorry for any inconvenience that our error may have caused.

Yours Truly,
Dell Notify Department
