Perhaps there is SOME reason behind this mayhem...........

Why flood (satiate) the market of potential Dell DJ buyers with a cheaper (and perhaps better) alternative made by a third party and at a huge loss?

I can't take the waiting anymore!!!!!

If they are going to cancel the orders than they should just DO IT and get it over with!

The stress of waiting is going to kill me. My wife and kids will have to sue Dell for my soon to be stress related demise.

We do it all the time in the automotive world when we have a new model year or new product. Granted we don't take the old vehicles down to 25% of the going rate..........Just interesting that Dell is coming out with it's own product.

fun continues...

I just got another email from dell saying my CC was declined AGAIN! I fixed it already once this morning and was working fine (well enough for me to order a lptop from dell). I called again and asked if they could just switch the order to another credit card with out canceling and re-ordering the current one. They said yes.

No new update since, but it's only been 15 min.

...

I haven't even gotten an email with a order # or anything yet (only got the first email confirming I ordered something). Oh well...

This deal is getting weirder by the hour. :D

They have not sent anyone a cancellation but one person that posted it.

They are making people jump through hoops to get their cc companies to honor the charges.

Makes you wonder when they'll drop the boom.

I had ordered one for myself when there was 4 posts in this thread, and I got the CC authorisation problem email last night. I called again today, and they reentered my info, he said the order will ship on 11/3. Order status was just changed to "in production" stating that it'll ship 11/3. All the other orders I placed were cancelled without question. Maybe I'll get one out of this, maybe I won't, but really, there's nothing to lose here.

to add a little bit of hope to the situation, the new listing does say they ship in one to two weeks, and the old said 3 to 5 days, so maybe they'll let it go and thats why the shipping date is up there for the new one?

I think they might claim that since the SKU has changed, the old one is out of stock indefinitely and therefore they can cancel all our orders.

A different SKU# does not make it a different product.

I'm not sure what they'll come up with but I'm not counting on a happy outcome.

I do think however if they are going to cancel everyones orders they should do it sooner than later. This delaying of info other than a 11/03 ship date is bad business, as I'm sure to the common person they would consider this to be a go.

I'm recalling the SKU incident because I think it happened before. Technically, in their computer system, if the SKU is out of stock and never coming back, they can cancel all the orders for that SKU. But we'll just have to wait and see.

this thread is funny. You have a better chance scoring with Jennifer Aniston then getting one of these Rios from dell.

Exactly. Still not convinced this is a mistake.

It could make business sense for a couple of reasons:

Dell is getting rid of all non Dell HD MP3 players to avoid competition
Dell wants to slow down the apple ipod/itunes juggernot and has NOTHING to do that today

I love seeing the little glimmers of hope in every post...but come on..reality check.

Lets say only 10,000 got ordered, maybe for roughly $80 each. $800,000.

What should they be costing? Let's say $300. $3,000,000.

A loss of $2.2 million dollars? I sincerely doubt this will come through. But if it does, I ordered one (and only one), and I will enjoy it.

I liked how quickly dell pulled the item once people started replying to the redded out FW threads...this seems to give credibility to someone saying that Dell now actively tracks the FW forum =)

We are all being tracked by Dell. Everytime you click on a link in AT forum, it is recorded (to generate refereal revenue for AT). Same as links on all these deal sites. It is extremely easy for Dell to pull up a report to see where all these buyers are coming from. So if some people think Dell doesn't know anything about Anandtech, they are kidding themselves.

It's not that dell doesn't see links from here(although actually I used ebates for that 4% off...as did many people here I'm sure), but they don't actively have someone constantly looking at the forum page here, but they have HIRED someone to sit around and monitor FW(hence the phonecall to FW about the 4600 deal that caused the FW mods to put the note about it being a non-honored price mistake within less than 2 hours[don't remember exact amount of time...probably around 1 hour?]).

So although they *could* potentially have someone looking at server logs and whatnot and see AT linking and all, I don't believe they had yet had anybody looking at AT's forum pages. Of course now they might, but when this deal was posted I don't believe they had anybody sitting here looking at this forum, or it would have been dead as fast as the 4600 deal was dead at FW.

Anyway since so many people used ebates Dell actually wouldn't even have noticed too much weird activity as far as referrer URLs goes, but that's not like an instant thing...someone would have to go and LOOK at the referrer logs. And I don't think they have anybody who does that every 3 minutes(lol that would be such a sad job considering how many hits dell gets...some poor sap would have to sit there wading through the referrers). But they did hire someone to monitor FW actively and look at all the deals. Wish i had such a stupidly easy job.

Well, I don't think it's THAT hard for people to believe. This is, after all, the year of Enron, Tyco, WorldCom.... ;)

Dell is a fantastic retailer that regularly gives us great products at the lowest prices. I hope they don't honor this deal. It makes absolutely no business sense to do so, and I don't want to pay more for something down the road just because someone thinks they "deserve" to get something for a price that they absolutely knew was incorrect.
You are right, of course. But I personally think they owe me and my company for all the wasted time we spend on hold with their tech support in India when all we need is a replacement part. RMA's are the WORST with Dell.

You assume they had 10,000 in stock.

And you assume they wholesale for anything close to retail.

If they had a few hundred and some manager said get rid of them by noon I don't care how you do it

Then some highly underpaid dell intern goes to work.....
