I'm fairly sure it is just a SATA Caviar Green in an external case, so it should work fine on a desktop. Not sure if the spindle speed is 5400 or 7200 RPM, though.

If it's a Green, then it's 5400rpm.

No, it comes with a wall-wart in the box. The 3.5" USB externals all are set up that way in my experience, with only the smaller 2.5" models supporting USB host power.
