How hard would it be for Dell to have a real time inventory tracking system, or have something that sets off an "alarm" after so many orders in a certain period of time to set the web page to show out of stock? It can't be that tough can it?

That's what I've been wondering. Hundreds of other computer parts companies not even close to the size of Dell have real-time inventory systems, so how hard would it be for the #1 computer company? It would have saved Dell and WD a major headache and not pissed off many customers.

They DO have realtime inventory monitoring and ordering (every 2 hours they order parts from suppliers). But this is for the BULDING OF THEIR SYSTEMS. In fact, they have the most efficient building process ever known. Most of you people don't understand that we ordered a part through INGRAM MICRO, TECH DATA or some other OUTSOURCER. Even OEM drives are likely fulfilled by somebody like UPS.

These OUTSOURCERS *may* not have great inventory tracking and shipping systems, or may not give their customers access to them. Perhaps they are only updated every 24 hours to the outside world... who knows.

dude.. u guy need some patient... just wait for this sucker.. and it will come
Dell are all waiting for u all to cancel, so people like me can get it .. .
why not wait a lil bit, it will come to you ... it is not like u r in a hurry to pop in the new hd ...

No, I would recommend that you cancel right now, because the drives will never come.

😀 That way I will get my drive faster 😀

Look?. If you feel Dell is handling the situation professionally, and providing it customers with a honest and practical solution, that is your opinion. I won?t knock you for that, so please don?t knock me for feeling as though Dell has a bunch of as$ clowns running the show. And as far as their "honest and practical" solution goes, 74 days to get a hard drive sounds ridiculous. Actually when I think about it I just laugh out loud. I feel like I am getting a bunch of bull sh!t?. So if you are in the same boat I am? file a complaint! If not don?t bash me in this thread, I sure am not bashing you.

No bashing meant, Havok. I just used the quote from your message to sum up a lot of resentment that I am seeing from a lot of people on this deal.

That's your opinion on it, you're welcome to it. I see that the situation has a LOT of variables involved. They simply can't get the drives without straining their business dealings with Western Digital. They can try to outsource drives from someone else, but what if they have an exclusive contract with xxxxx (ingram micro, etc.)? Dell's hands are tied then, because they can only get the drives from one or two vendors if that is the case. There is the port situation on the West Coast adding another variable if these drives do come from Malaysia.

Who's to say if they aren't being told by Western Digital "We will NOT get these drives to you unless you can get 50% of the people to cancel their orders"? Then WD would be the bad guy, because they don't want to pay out all those rebates, but Dell ends up holding the bag and looking bad.

I am a manager in a store where we move a ton of product and deal with lots of different vendors. And we have had a number of teritorial pissing matches come about because of trying to service the customer with the lowest price.

I'm content right now to let it unfold. I'd like to have some advance knowledge from Dell as to when the drives will ship. I'd like to know when I have to have that money in my account. If they tell me Dec. 31st, then ship Nov. 10th and overdraft my account, I'm also going to be pissed.

If Dell indeed has to backorder to Western Digital factory in Malaysia, it will take awhile to fulfill them. Let say it will take WD about 5 days to build and prep all 10K HD. Add 30 days for an ocean liner shipment to the West Coast. Add 10 days to unload those container and deliver it to Dell Warehouse. Took 5 days to unload everything, prep it and update their inventory system as well as readying it for shipment. It already took pretty close to 2 months to go to this point alone.

The lady actually called and told me that it has been delayed till 12/31.
I've never seen any company actually call me saying it has been delayed and that
I could cancel it right now or wait until they ship it.
She also told me that the rebate is extended.

I think they are trying their best to make us customers happy.

I was at Best Buy today and I see they had a $100 rebate on a Western Digital 200GB.

It was $299 less $100 rebate. Maybe Dell confused these 2 hard drives. I chose to cancel out.

I can only understand people complaining about this deal for a couple of reasons. The people who ordered OEM drives are left in limbo. And partially that is their own mistake. Most savvy shoppers going into this deal new that the rebate would be invalid for OEM drives, and ordered the retail. But the difference between OEM and Retail was vague and misleading on the Dell website. Now, Dell did have the right to cancel all the orders, no questions asked. But someone wrote up that Rebate announcement and stuck it on BOTH the OEM and Retail. The announcement made it clear that it was for the Retail boxed, but it's presence along with the vaguely worded OEM item made for confusion that should be remedied by Dell. Those folks have a right to complain.

Well as of Friday I was told by a customer service person that both the OEM drive I had ordered and the retail drive I had ordered qualified for a $100 rebate. I asked how to get the rebate on the OEM drive and was told that everything I needed would be included. I was also told I could get both rebates 🙁

Since it is limited to one per household I am not sure how that can be.

So even days later the Customer service people have no clue. This is the main reason people are upset I bet. When they call or email they get different answers so they become confused.

I am waiting on both orders to see what happens. I really only need one so the first to ship gets it and the next one will get cancelled more than likely. I hope in a way it is the OEM drive since I am hoping to get an instant credit and pass on the rebate mess.

What a bunch of sniveling crybabies. I've never seen so many whiney-butts in one thread. Anybody not taking megadoses of lithium can see that Dell is doing a helluva lot more than 99.9% of the other computer companies would do in a similar situation. Most would have dumped the OEM rebate mistake in the trashcan with a simple retraction and apology. Dell offers to make good with a $100 credit. That would seem to indicate to anybody not too involved with the current Kennedy assassination theory that Dell is making an effort to make good on this deal. But not to the conspiracy theorists. Noooooo....! Dell, instead of trying to make good is conspiring not to ship the hard drives. They have warehouses full of hard drives! There are ships in the harbor with tens of thousands of hard drives on them just waiting for Dell to give the word to unload! That's it. Dell is conspiring to have hot deals where they don't ship(and therefor don't sell)the merchandise. Yeah, yeah. Now I've got it. They have a hot deal where they try to make it look like they're selling something but really they're just trying to aggravate us. They actually don't want to sell anything! They just want to hide it in their warehouses and make us mad! Really, really mad. Mad enough to whine and moan and cry and call the BBB.

Whiney-butt calls BBB;

Whiney-butt: I'd like to file a complaint against Dell Computers

BBB: What is the problem sir?

Whiney-butt: I ordered a hard drive and they said they don't have it in stock so there will be a delay in shipping it.

BBB: What is the problem sir?

Whiney-butt: I want my hard drive now. I know they have my hard drive. They just don't want me to be happy.

BBB: Did Dell charge you for the hard drive sir?

Whiney-butt: No. I want my hard drive. Wah, wah, wah.

BBB: Sir, please don't cry so much. It won't help resolve the situation.

Whiney-butt: I want my hard drive. I want my hard drive. I want my hard drive. I want....

BBB: Will Dell let you cancel your order sir?

Whiney-butt: Yes. But I want my hard drive. Wah, wah, wah.

BBB: Sir, why don't you cancel your order and get your hard drive from another source?

Whiney-butt: Because then I couldn't bitch and moan and try to sell my conspiracy theory to everyone.

BBB: What conspiracy theory is that sir?

Whiney-butt: Dell really has ten warehouses full of the hard drive that I want, but they won't ship them out because they don't want me to be happy.

BBB: Thank you for contacting the BBB. We'll be in touch with you as soon as you return to reality.

ic that too..

DanTMWTMP, billmaine2001 and for those who are still confused about how the rebate works;

New rebate form says it is good on drives purchased between 10/8 thru 10/13 and you have 30 days after the drives ship to claim your rebate. So in a nutshell, you had to purchase the drive during the specified period but you have 30 days after it ships to mail in your rebate.

Later...

Why don't you both read through the entire thread, it has been discussed thoroughly...

Very well said Chasm22. I think all the whiners should just cancel their orders.

Anybody who ordered OEM shouldn't get jack...according to me. It clearly states retail on the rebate form. These forums are like one big welfare emporium...everybody thinks that they're entiltled to something for nothing.

And what is with you people contacting the BBB? That's hysterical. Grow up. Lighten up. Do you see U.N. helicopters flying around your house too? Do you think the government banned lead paint so that they can better monitor your every move? Get on some anti-paranoia medication...quick!! Dell is not out to screw anybody over. Although you OEM buyers deserve it....

Railer,

You have no right to your elitist attitude. The OEM drive was advertised as having a $100 MIR. The link for the OEM rebate NEVER WORKED. It states retail on the rebate for part #60210... part #09295 never had the rebate posted/link working. Check your facts before knocking those who followed the initial deal from FW (before the retail drive was mentioned in an update). It's not an issue of something for nothing.. if it were, people would be asking for the OEM for free due to the error. All we wanted is for DELL to make good on their error. If they would have pulled the listing w/ rebate for the OEM on Saturday, it would simply have been an overlooked error on their part and I think the general majority (myself included) would have just cancelled and moved on... however, to keep it advertised for the entire time makes it a whole different story... How would you like it if you found a 100-pack of CD-R's for Free after rebate, but the rebate didn't exist so you had no way to get your money back?? I don't think you would...

Contacting the BBB was useful... do you HONESTLY think DELL would give $100 credits to people who bought the OEM version had they not had complaints filed against them based on the volume of drives ordered as well as the actual loss they're going to end up eating on these?? If you think so, you're naive... DELL is in the business to make money - plain and simple. They could have easily called it a price mistake and, as per the terms on their website, and cancelled all OEM drive orders. By raising some noise, results will occur. The rep I talked with is still insisting that the rebate will be accepted for the OEM... we know it's false, but apparently they don't. We don't need anti-paranoia medication - you need to realize that if the shoe were on the other foot, you'd be doing the same thing. Nuff said!
