They have a radio ad pushing the PS3 deal in this area. I won't be camping out, but I'll be there when they open.

nothing going on here that I've heard. I don't camp, if I can't get something when I walk in I'll just walk out and wait for the next deal. Got 5 Wal-Marts within 20 miles so if there ain't one local I'll call around.

Warning: Walmart has not always honored the "national prices" everywhere in the past. Some states or localities have vague laws about "underpricing" restrictions, and my local WalMart says that is the reason they can't give door-crasher prices here. Last year's $300 laptop was $380 here in Utah. Not other national chain that I know of used that same logic - they all used the national promotional pricing.

I just got back from Wally World and there was a line around the block. They had 29 laptops and passed out tickets at 6am.

Posting from the $298 laptop :D

St.cloud, FL location had 37 left when I got mine and there was only 8 people left in the line. A very good deal I must say.

Picked up a laptop at a store in DeSoto, TX. They had 40 laptops, but 100+ people wanting them! No tickets passed out -- just stand in line until 8:00, then they handed them out 1 at a time and didn't hand out the next one until that one was paid for. A VERY slow process! Lucky I was #10 in line (6:30 am).

I picked up the ps3 in San Marcos, TX at 8:30 - there were 3 left. There was a line of about 15 - 20 people when I got there and they were all after laptops. The line totally disappeared when they ran out of laptops. I went to the Walmart in Buda, TX first at 8 am and they did have the laptops but I didn't see any ps3's.

Thanks for the hot deal - I had been hoping they would do $100 giftcard ps3 deal again!

I have to work on Black Friday this year (like every year), and I hate standing in huge lines for hours at a time anyway. So, I went ahead and got the laptop as a Christmas gift for my sister. My ex sister-in-law also got one as a gift for my 12 year old niece. The local store had 18, we were numbers 11 and 12 after having shown up at about 7:30am. About 9 people showed up at 6am, and the manager guaranteed each of them would get one just for coming in that early if they stayed.

Pretty much a situation of where you get what you pay for - a solid, very basic laptop with a 1 year warranty. It will do email/internet via either onboard b/g wireless or integrated NIC, and has a DVD-rewritable (I assume with Lightscribe, as there is a LightScribe flyer in the box). The supplied battery is definitely pretty wimpy. Memory should be upgradeable to 4gb (with up to 768mb reserved for shared onboard graphics).

My sister will likely use it for basic Internet access and temporary picture storage (from her Nikon DSLR) while traveling. This should serve perfectly fine in that role once I dump all the bloated "trialware" that is surely installed on it, replacing it with some good freeware like Comodo Firewall, AVG or Avast antivirus, Picasa, Gimp, and Open Office 3.0.

You won't be playing many games on it, but then again a person seriously into gaming who had any sense wouldn't be considering buying this laptop (or any other laptop with integrated/shared graphics, dual processor or not).

BTW, the processor is socketed and not soldered according to the manuals on the Compaq support site. This might allow a processor upgrade to dual core down the road as processor prices drop (the support document mentions processors all the way up to a T9600, and the support website only shows a single BIOS for Intel processors which would hopefully support dual core processors on the current Cel575 machines).

I'll tell you what... I lost my Fireworks CD so I installed GIMP on my main Vista PC when I had to reinstall.... I LOVE IT!!!! I'm actually redoing all of the pictures on my blog with GIMP because I'm finding things in photos I couldn't even see before. And on my laptop, I only had Office XP and can't afford Office 2007. I put OpenOffice on it and now I'm perfectly happy and wouldn't use anything else. Still have Outlook, but I need that for work. ;)

I've looked into replacing a laptop CPU. A high end CPU will likely cost more than the lappie. Hence not a good upgrade for such a low end machine. Best to just enjoy it for what it is, a competent but unremarkable laptop.

Be careful with that processor list. The CQ50 shares the maintenance guide with the HP G50 which may or may not have a different system board and/or higher BIOS revisions than the CQ50 in the future. You may be limited to a chip with the same FSB, however, with a newer BIOS, maybe not.

"*Sanyo 46'' LCD 1080p HDTV $898 Minimum 2 per store Limit 1"

I was able to pick this one up today but only cost me $798...I do not have it hooked up to HD yet(getting it tues) so I can't comment on its true abilities. It's big though, massive upgrade from a 36" tube television.

We scored two PSP packages and two laptops. Our Wal-Mart had probably 40-50 laptops. The PSP package was a killer deal, each pack had a movie, game, 1 gig memory stick plus a 30 dollar gift card

I got to walmart at 7:30 this morning, they already had 30 people waiting in line, but luckily the store here got 86 laptops......they handed out numbers and I got one, paid for at the electronics dept. Then as I was walking out I noticed they were selling them up at the front of the store also, and the lady at the electronics dept. never took my numbered slip......so I ran the laptop out to my car and ran back in and bought a second one at the front, will make a good christmas present for my gf :)

Anyways, I was lucky enough to get in on the recent Gateway m-6862 deal from best buy, which I upgraded to a T8300 so I had the spare T5750 laying around. I went ahead and installed it on this Compaq.......just a forewarning, it was a PITA to install, because the whole laptop had to be disassembled to get to the CPU. In any case it was a worthwhile attempt, and the Compaq recognized the T5750 without a hitch......I have to admit the stock celeron was dog slow and I wasnt very happy with the stock performance.

Overall the Gateway was a much better purchase in my opinion, but here are my impressions of the Compaq CQ50

Likes:

It has a very stylish appearance, and seems to be built very solid.
The speakers are great.
The screen is nice for a glossy screen.
Has 2 DIMMs for easy ram upgrade.
Has a button to disable the touchpad if desired.
Nice sized CPU HSF assembly.
Easy access to ram, HDD, and wireless card.

Dislikes:

Did not come with an OS disk.
No bluetooth and didnt see another mini PCIe slot to upgrade to.
No card reader, webcam, or HDMI port.
The touchpad is painted so its kind of sticky and hard to navigate with.
The DVD rom drive is a pain to open, has a very small button on it.
CPU upgrade requires complete disassembly of the machine.
No wireless N. b/g only.

Dispite its flaws I think this one is worth the money, but anyone doing more than just meanial tasks would probably want to upgrade the CPU which might be a daunting task for some. With a pricetag at just over $300 most of the dislikes can be warrented as extras.

Someone on FW suggested that you could replace the CPU with a C2D laptop chip for around $100-150. Said something about "Socket P".

Yes I noticed that myself.

I may try later this week.
