For Cross-fire, the cards can run at different speeds. You can even cross-fire HD7950 with HD7970. You can bump the memory voltage from 5.7ghz to 6.0ghz in CCC (AMD's driver control panel go to Performance ---> AMD Overdrive --> Move the memory to 1500, press Apply). For $360, it's going to be hard to find an HD7970 with 1.05ghz GPU clocks at this time. The GPU clock matters much more than the memory clock. It's a 15 second fix in AMD drivers anyway if you enable AMD Overdrive and move the slider to full 1500mhz.

Thanks. I think I'll definitely keep this card then (will be arriving on tuesday or wednesday along with all my other parts-super excited!). Really wish I just would've given in and bought two of these when they were in stock but it's nice to know that even if I pay more for a second card it'll work out nicely.

Ya, it'll definitely work. That's 1 key advantage of CF over SLI - you can mix and match GPUs with different clocks and sometimes even different GPUs (for example HD5850 can be cross-fired wtih HD5870). The only time you are penalized for having a slower GPU is in regard to VRAM in CF. If you paired an HD7850 1GB with HD7850 2GB, then they'll default to using 1GB of VRAM at maximum. This isn't an issue for 7950/7970 cards as all of them ship with 3GB of VRAM. Let me know if you need help unlocking the CCC drivers to extend beyond 1125/1150mhz on the GPU and enabling GPU voltage control.

Welp, bad news for me. The card produces a green screen on any combination of monitor and cable that I've tried. No change flipping the BIOS switch. Ah well, guess I have to buy a card with the Never Settle bundle

That sucks. Did you issue an RMA with Newegg? Did they say they'll send you a replacement card with 3 free games coupon? If you call Newegg for RMA, they will do free shipping to their California office. Otherwise, the RMA shipping label will cost you return shipping fee if you just do an RMA online.

I just did an RMA return. Got my refund already. I grabbed the Sapphire Dual X 7970 with 3 games. I like it, but it's got some pretty ugly coil whine. I've had bad luck lately lol

That sucks. Can you hear the coil whine when playing games with music/sound turned on though? Or is it only bad during loading screens?

How is the overclocking on the new version of the Dual-X 7970? The 7950 blue pcb one seems to be a solid overclocker.

I normally run with Vsync, which eliminates coil whine. When I get brought back to menu's that draw 2,000 FPS not synced, I hear the coil whine. Lucky me, I love vsync.

I have the Sapphire Dual X 7970 as well. I downloaded Trixx which has voltage adjustment but what I found is that this thing does 1150 on stock voltage (bios switch 2) and upping the voltage, even to 1.3 (from 1.17) doesn't even allow to hit 1200. Almost like 1150 is the barrier, no matter what. Also, 1150 seems stable as can be... I am happy with my card. Quality of the chip is like 71%. Not great, but bad.

Even with Vsync, the whine becomes a low hum, but it's still pretty noticeable unless I play with my headset on. That's not something I want to do all the time though, and unfortunately for me, Vsync introduces some pretty nasty input lag in my most played games, BF3 and WoT. It really throws me off :/ the card is going back on Monday, bought a 7970 Lightning on a killer deal from one of our members

I did a RMA replace on this card. It would freeze all the time in 3d games. Hope the replacement is better.

I had horrible coil whine on this card and ended up returning it for a refund because they were out of stock. I left a 3D benchmark program on overnight to see if that would help eliminate the noise, but it didn't help at all. It did run great without any hiccups in any games, but the noise from the coil whine was unbearable. Guess I was one of the unlucky ones as well...
