Anyways, Anyone know if this will work with DVD-R discs? I don't feel like wasting a DVD disc if it doesnt work.

King - It might read dvd-r, but since it is a dvd+r drive, I doubt it will burn it :/

Plus I'm eating the cost of the rebate for 3 months+. Next time you feel like ripping into someone's character get the whole story you judgemental prick.

okay, #1, you DID say a friend and have now edited your message. good for you, you tricked us all. and guess what, i support my friends computers too. wow, i think we ALL do that for free. my point was i would never sell something to a friend except for a couple bucks over cost for stamps and copies. i'm glad you edited your message, you really shouldn't be calling people you rip off friends. (edit: if they're customers, its a different story. thats a relatively good price for inclusion in a system. however, you're violating the rebate terms most likely. :p) personally, i call them ebayers.

hehe, now we see eye to eye.

PS. I did not edit my msg in the manner which you suggest... I was correcting math error so... but I do get what your saying. I would never rip actual friends on like that.

I paid $300 for a 4x yamaha cdrw....but that was three years ago. If you care to wait 3 years, I'm sure you'll be able to get a great DVD writer for a song.

I don't think dvd-writers will go above ~16x because at that speed, the angular velocity of dvd's will be the same as that for current 52x CD's and as some people have already experienced first hand, disk cannot phsically handle much more speed without breaking. (unless of course they move to multibeam)

Also keep in mind that DVD-R isn't nearly as close to a DVD as a CDR is to a CD. Real DVDs can carry up to 17 or so gigs of data, these DVDs only hold 4.7 so good luck copying a movie. But a CDR atleast could copy most CDs (when they came out).

Crap.. I knew that I was getting in on too many Cendyne deals lately. I just looked at the Cendyne rebate and I think it's the same rebate from the Tgiving deal. I guess I'll have to cancel and then reorder the dvd drive without the Cendyne drive. Oh well.

Trolls, e-bayer's,rippin' off friends, whatever. If it's what you want buy the sh*t, if not move on to the next important deal. BTW, MOST of what I've read states that even though DVD+RW is what Dell is offering AND HP is committed to; compatibility is higher with another format (at this time) that being DVD-RW. Dash formats got an early foothold and the approval of the "DVD Forum". However the plus formats have some heavy hitters backing that format. Hot deal?? Maybe/maybe not. There's always something bigger, better, and faster on the horizon. In the next couple of YEARS, approx. 9 electronics co.'s have proposed Blu-ray(as much as 54GB on a 2 layer, one-sided disc), but would require a new type of player and duplication equipment. On the other side of the coin is Toshiba and NEC that want an alternative blue laser format; they claim it will be more compatible with existing players & production equipment. The latter proposal would hold about 30GB on a dual-layer side. Only time will tell. You can either be an early adopter, wait forever, OR.... shell out your hard earned for Sony's COMBO drive (CD-RW/DVD+RW/DVD-RW).:D Oh, ya... use the coupons, it's hot. It will tide you over till the next format comes along, LOL!

For $117 bucks I'll make the investment now to have the convenience and then upgrade later when this bigger and better thing comes along. My Apex supports -r/w & +r/w so I'm not worried the slightest bit :)

Off subject, but does Verbatim own Cendyne now? I'm asking because I just got an email for a rebate that I sent in over Thanksgiving for a Cendyne product and it says Verbatim now instead of Cendyne. Weird.

Yes. And Sony was committed to Betamax. So what's your point?

Ok here is the best deal I've ever gotten in on... this is totally individualistic to me b/c of the things I'm selling that are now useless for me since I have a DVD Burner that acts as my DVD-ROM and CD-RW... this is just a brag :) Already threw it in the brag and moan thread but I figured I'd throw it on the end of this thread as a follow up to my posting that I got this deal :)

12/22: I decide I want a DVD+R/W drive and I notice the OfficeMax deal and here we go.

299.99 Verbatim DVD+R/W
89.99 Cendyne 48x12x48 CD-RW (not sure what this drive is. It is actually a 48x16x48, not a 48x12x50 Aopen some have recieved. Serial #AGE150F212B0XXXXX X=Random #'s Drive Model: CW 4802. Anyone identify this drive?)
+ 20 Tax
- 60 IR on Verbatim
- 40 IR on Cendyne
- 50 Coupon
- 40 MIR Verbatim
- 30 MIR Cendyne (Total Cost of the drive = $19.99)
- 30 - Sold the Cendyne for $50 - $19.99 = Net of $30
- 40 For selling my now useless Sony DVD-Player in my computer :)
- 20 For selling my now useless MPEG-2 Decoder Card
- 20 For selling my now useless SCSI Yamaha CD-RW
- Another Free Cendyne 48x12x48 CD-RW Drive (for simplistic reasons I'm counting my $50 in MSN dollars as a free Cendyne burner b/c that is exactly what I'm gonna use it for, so...)
- 30 MIR from the "Free" Cendyne burner (Total cost of the drive now = $19.99 once again)
- 30 - Selling the "Free" Cendyne burner for $50 - $19.99 = Net of $30 again
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Grand Total = 19.98 for a freakin' DVD Burner - lol!!! I love deals!

If anyone sees any error in logic or math let me know :) l8rz all.

PS. Maybe I'll ebay it and make like $180 off of it? lol, nah, I'll keep it.

PPS. I just checked the drive... it is manf. by NEC... what does that mean? lol

When checking on my rebates at rebateshq.com the other day, I saw a rebate form Verbatim that I did not recognize. It is in the same amount as one of the two BF OM Cendyne DVD-ROM rebates I submitted (the other one correctly shows up as a Cendyne/OM rebate). I'm thinking that is what it is.

I almost bought one a couple days ago. You guys should be aware though... i dont think you can copy DVD movies outright (like CD's)... you have to do some special stuff, and basically you just end up with the main part of the movie, and none of the special features etc... oh, and the movie HAS to be less than 2 hours long. I wish you could just use clone CD and make straight up copies :(

OK

i got mine today. installed it. it reads cd's w/o a hitch (no big accomplishment i know)

so now the next question is, which one of these packages that they provide do i need to install and what do they do??

WinDVD
MyDVD
Nero Express.

what do each do and which do i need or not need. :(

BTW, mine is recognized by my OS as an NEC Burner.

I have this drive and works great! I am burning some data DVD+R discs right now with Nero and the Fuji DVD+R discs from Best Buy.

You CAN NOT just directly copy a dvd movie to a DVD+R or DVD-R disc for 2 reasons :

1. most DVD movies use DUAL-LAYER DVD discs (DVD-9). DVD+R discs are 1 layer (not enough storage space for the movie and extras).
2. DVD movies are encrypted. You must use a program to DECRYPT the files on the dvd movie disc (dvdxcopy, smartripper, etc. are some programs).

If you want to make EASY copies of DVD movies, look for a program called DVD X COPY (www.dvdxcopy.com). I just copied Austin Powers Goldmember with this program last night. (Yes, I legally own the original disc) :). I had to cut out the menus and extras on the disc, but i was able to make the full movie fit on 1 DVD+R disc. DVD X COPY makes this whole process VERY EASY. It will even automatically cut out the extras, etc. to try and make the movie fit on 1 disc (although most movies will have to be put on 2 discs) :(
