I belive the review I linked to has it. Although its only for the "older" version of the 1600, there's a bunch of info on how to find out if you have the old one or not. Alternitively type mintek 1600 into google, the first page (also on that nerd out site) I think tells about the hacking to be region free.

The standard Target price on this is $49. So $39 isn't some kind of shocking door-buster deal or anything. I think you will be able to find one. While older versions of this had component output, I don't think this one does.

Best buy carried this for a while (thats where I got it) and thier standard price was $50ish. Yes, this is NOT a player with all sorts of bells and whistles like component output, and progressive output, optical output, etc etc. However, there are a lot of people out there who just need a small cheap dvd player that does VCD's and burned CDRs, this is it for a lot of those people:)

I totally understand this. I am not one of those snobs who think you have to pay more money to get something better. In fact, I do some event video work and I just handed out 30 DVD-R disks to people (they actually paid me!) Most of these were cheap Lead Data disks, which in my opinion, have surprisingly good compatibility. So far only one complaint of skipping and pausing. Not sure of the brand of player, but I would prefer people actually have these cheap Apex and Minitek players that usually play everything. Sometimes it is the expensive name-brand players that cause trouble. I'll swap out different brand DVD-R, like Maxell, Ritek and Verbatim, but if a certain player has trouble, the chances aren't real good it will play any DVD-R.

All that being said, if you have a better TV, say some kind of HDTV, or even just one with component outputs, you might be better spending $79 at Buy.com and getting a good JVC Progressive scan player. This player is rumored to have excellent compatibilty with all kinds of formats and media. Plus you get the bells and whistles, like express play, which improves start response time. Plus you get the satisfaction and hopefully quality of a brand name. From my experience with electronics, do your research and rarely buy top-of-line (expensive!) stuff. The middle priced stuff will usually get you what you need.

Nope. The opposite is in fact true. The new ones have no indication that they play SVCD or VCD on the unit, but they nonetheless play them perfectly right out of the box. The older ones say that they can play VCD, but you have to hack it to play SVCD.

Just picked one up too. I can concur with the guy above me, "the bomb" is a good way to describe this player.

And a correction on the price: it's $39.88 instead of $39.99 (no big deal)

Two bummers. They only had the Portland at my Target. I picked it up but wonder if it's worth keeping. The shelves were wiped out of ice tea also.

Raw MPEG means that you can just burn mpeg files onto a data cd and the player will play them back. I have tried all kinds of MPEG parameters and as long as they are MPEG files they play back perfectly. I burn them in Nero as a data CD using the wizard.

When you put a data cd in the player it brings up a nice explorer type of interface, select your MPEG and it plays!

This is really nice cuz sometimes you will have an MPEG and you do not need to convert it to VCD or SVCD format to view it in the player. It's a killer feature!

No. It will not play DIVX files. Though DIVX is also known as MPEG-4, these are not the type of MPEG files the Mintek can play. DIVX files are almost always avi files though I have seen a few in asf format. In either case they cannot be played in the Mintek or any other DVD player with the possible exception of a player manufactured by a company called KISS (I'm not kidding).

Thanks for the heads up, I have been looking for something like this for a while as a compliment to my DIVX box. I just ran to Taget and picked one up an hour before the sale is over and they actually had 5 more and a whole shelf of the Portland slimline ones also.

Holy crap, this DVD player is incredible. I picked one up this morning and tested it on my system. It has played everything I threw at it excluding AVI files. Amazing stuff, I must say. There are literally a hundred units left at the Target I went to, I just wish people knew what they were missing out on.

The chapter button is insanely fast and responsive, as are the other buttons on the player.

Thanks for the heads up on such a great deal.

It also costs about $220+ or so, rather than the $40 of this :) If you think that's worth it to play divx, well the mintek is probably not for you :)

I'm glad everyone is liking this player. I have had it for a year and love it.

I was at BB today and they had a KLH DVD player with component and S/PDIF input for same price.

Needless to say I picked up the last one in my area. :D

just got one from my local Target for $49...they had a whole bunch.

It has played everything I've thrown at it so far. reads all my CD-R,CD-RW,DVD-R,DVD-RWs and plays both VCDs and SVCDs
