However, there are a lot of people out there who just need a small cheap dvd player that does VCD's and burned CDRs, this is it for a lot of those people
I totally understand this. I am not one of those snobs who think you have to pay more money to get something better. In fact, I do some event video work and I just handed out 30 DVD-R disks to people (they actually paid me!) Most of these were cheap Lead Data disks, which in my opinion, have surprisingly good compatibility. So far only one complaint of skipping and pausing. Not sure of the brand of player, but I would prefer people actually have these cheap Apex and Minitek players that usually play everything. Sometimes it is the expensive name-brand players that cause trouble. I'll swap out different brand DVD-R, like Maxell, Ritek and Verbatim, but if a certain player has trouble, the chances aren't real good it will play any DVD-R.
All that being said, if you have a better TV, say some kind of HDTV, or even just one with component outputs, you might be better spending $79 at Buy.com and getting a good JVC Progressive scan player. This player is rumored to have excellent compatibilty with all kinds of formats and media. Plus you get the bells and whistles, like express play, which improves start response time. Plus you get the satisfaction and hopefully quality of a brand name. From my experience with electronics, do your research and rarely buy top-of-line (expensive!) stuff. The middle priced stuff will usually get you what you need.
