The sale may be over, I think it ended on saturday. If someone finds out what price it is now, please post it here and I'll update the post.

The mintek 1600 DVD player is on sale at target for $39.99!! It does VCD/SVCD, mp3,raw mpg 2 files, cdr, cdrw etc. Someone has also mentioned that they play DVD-R, DVD-RW, and DVD+R, DVD+RW although I have not confirmed that.

I bought one of these at best buy last year for like $57. This is a MUCH hotter deal. There's a lot of talk on the review page of older vs newer version. The older version can be made region free, and macrovision free thats about the only differance I think. The one thing this is missing that is a front display, but who cares, it displays all info you need on the tv.

I went and checked the back of mine to see what connectors it has. It has S video out, RCA video out, RCA stereo sound outputs (can output to receiver to get dolby surround), RCA stereo In. It also has a Digital out (says coaxial, but it looks like spdif to me, its definately not the connection you use on cable TV). I'm pretty sure it has video in as well. In addition it has this thing that looks like svideo input but its called something weird like RF something. No optical sound out, but hey its $40.

According to the review it will also play PAL stuff, but outputs as NTSC. Dunno if that helps anyone, its not something I need but :)

Tomorrow is last day of sale. Someone I knew went out and got one just today, so they are still there as far as I know. I bought one from best buy last year so I haven't checked stock at my target.

Well... I don't have to work until late tomorrow, so I might swing up there and see if I can get my hands on one.

This is a really hot deal, I'd highly recommend this player above any comprable Apex model. It doesn't feel as cheap, and there were a few SVCDs I tried on the Apex that wouldn't play correctly. The Mintek plays everything.

I own one of these (got it for free from Best Buy).. It plays just about everything.. Only problem is that I have to open it up and force the tray to eject each time I want to put a new disc in :( I don't know if this is typical but if it is I would stay away...

Have you asked the folks at BB about it? I'd imagine something like that would be covered by warantee.

I own one of these from best buy. I dont have ANY problems ejecting or any other problems. I would say its not typical, especially since I reccomended a friend get this near the same time I did, and he doesn't have problems like that either.

I'll put my 2 cents in. I own 2 of these and think they are the absolute BOMB! They do play everything (VCD, SVCD, MP3, DVD-MP3, DVD-R, DVD-RW, JPG, and Raw MPEG). There are a couple other players that do this, but you'll be hard-pressed to find one that does it for $39.99. I told 2 friends about this and one has had it for a while and working great and another I got it for him at from Target yesterday. Yes, the other $39.99 one is the Portland, which I am not sure the deal with it. If you don't have a player that does all this does, I say jump on this now!!

What does this have for audio outputs? Optical at all?

EDIT: Nope, I found the answer

I think it has stereo RCA (which can be used for dolby surround--not digital-- if you output to receiver) and maybe digital spdif. Not 100% sure. Definately no optical though. But hey, its $40 :)

Went and looked on the back, found the plugs and updated first post on what I found.

Stereo RCA can't be used for Dolby Digital. You can get Dolby Surround, but not Dolby Digital 5.1.

The unit has Digital Coaxial for a 5.1 audio stream. No optical though.

I don't know, all I know is thats the only one they have at Target in LA (jefferson) and its made by daewoo. Any one have any other information?

EDIT: Just found some info on it:

link

Its the same as the DAEWOO DVG-5200S, which you can hack to make region free.

But does it play raw mpegs?

There were about 3 Mintek 1600s on the shelf at the Gardena, CA Target (Van Ness & Redondo Beach Blvd) at 4 p.m. today.

I already own a Mintek 2110, and an APEX AD-1500, so I don't need another budget DVD player yet. ;)

Went to my target and they had both the Mintek and Portland/Daewoo, which one would be the better player? Any ideas?

outpost.com has an awesome dvd player. It's a Digix and is $39.99 as well.

I just got it yesterday and its GREAT. Not cheaply made like apex's and it
plays the cheap media.

Being as I have the mintek, and it does it all, I would pick that one. Do you know if the other does raw mpg2 for instance? Or all those other formats? Did you read the long review of the mintek?

Thanks for the heads up, I'll check the Target by my house tomorrow, and hope they still have ONE in stock.
