I'm in chapter 5 now. Not a big spoiler, but you have to turn off the gravity at one time and man, it looked SO awesome! The game has a great atmosphere and mood and together with the more action-oriented gameplay gives a really great experience

this game is phenomenal. Seriously, the first one was "OK" and a good survival horror... if you could get passed the akward pc control setup.

But dammmmm.... they really did a wonder on this. twisted sick and amazing. Couldn't stop playing it this weekend. story, charcters, graphics, controls, gameplay, setting... awesome... It's nice seeing that you get larger game areas away and out of that ship most of the game. I like how they brought some character to Isaac, giving him a personality.

Makes Doom 3, FEAR, Bioshock, STALKER, Resident Evil, silent hill and about whatver else look luke warm in comparison.

Seriously one of the bestr single player stories i've played... best atmosphere ever.

I said it over in the console thread for this game... it's one of the best game's I've ever played. Worth every penny.

I'm torn- I know it'd look better on my pc + keyboard/mouse is my prefered controls, but my ps3 is hooked up to my home theater/surround sound speakers...if it's anything like the first, the sound is a huge part of it...only 2.1 on my PC....

I have it for both pc and xbox 360. Obviously, up close, on my gtx580... it looks better @ 1080p on my 24inch screen. tesxture quality, shadows, lightning, fx, antialiasing. But you literally have to look for the improvements after a while

If i sit on my couch, and turn on my 360 or ps3, and I play it on that... i noticed its more comfortable controls (thought the pc layout is fine [far improved over dead space 1]) on the 360 controller, and since i sit oh, 6 feet from my tv on the couch on a samsung 1080p 50 inch screen, i can barely notice a difference over the pc because of the distance... just more comftorble viewing too. If i get up and stand right in front of tv, yeah.. i can see antialiasing, shadow quality ia a bit lower, textures, a few other small things.

But personally, this game, i like playing on my 360 just because i can sit back and relax, and it works well on the 360 controller.

Thanks- good to know- I'm thinking I'll pick it up for ps3 later today.

I have the game for 2 days already and haven't played it. I am super excited with all these feedback! I also have 2.1 system on my PC, but it's time to whip out my unopened Logitech G35 7.1 surround headphone.

EDIT: Question for DS1 players============
===================================

Do I need to play DS1 in order to enjoy DS2? Do I need to do some background reading on DS1? TIA

I would play DS 1 first because it is awesome game and is very cheap now. DS 2 looks and handles much better and so going back to DS 1 after playing DS 2 would be a bit painful. there is a short "previously on DS" video in the DS 2 menu though.

Damn, they really thought this through when they made this game. I will just play through the video and jump on to DS2.

Thanks!

well I still suggest playing the first one before going into the second one. its such a good game that when you finish, you will really be pumped for the even better 2nd installment.

I have it on PS3 and it looks great on my 57" Samsung plasma. Also, PS3 version comes with Dead Space Extraction for free, so that's a nice bonus :awe:

Just finished all 13 chapters.

Holy Shiznit! What a ride from start to finish!

I loved the first game, even though I am not a big EA fan, and was really intrigued for the second game. It really took a lot for me to pick this title up but TOTALLY worth it! Games like this will restore my faith in EA. Especially when it comes to depth and quality of the story, I don't know of any other single player game in the last ten years, with the excpetion of CoD 1 & 2 and FEAR, have I enjoyed myself this much in a shooter.

Chapter 6 was fucking WICKED when the exploding baby crawled into the Mom's lap and 'sploded them both all over the window. Going back to the Ishimura for a chapter was really cool, but I felt like it kinda was lazy on the developer's part especially since it's mostly the same levels from the previous game just re-skined. I also really didn't care for the necromorph in the final two chapters that seems to be able to regenerate itself and I wasted a ton of ammo and stasis to keep him at bay.

The game did have some points where it felt like it dragged on, at least to me it did, but other then that I really didn't have any other complaints! Way to go Visceral!

Oh and www.yourmomhatesthis.com is just fantastic marketing! Haha

They did a terrible job on that one. It's a big plot point from DS1, so if you played the first game, you realized what it was real quick. If you hadn't, they don't make it clear at all what you're supposed to do.

On an unrelated note, the weapons in this game have an unusual balancing concern - ammo costs. Not that you'll ever want to buy ammo, but carrying around a weapon means the ammo for it drops randomly. But there is a tremendous mismatch in the price of the ammo that drops. One pickup of Assault Rifle ammo is worth like 250 credits. One pickup of contact beam ammo is worth 2000. Means that even if you're never going to use them, carrying around the weapons with expensive ammo (Line Gun, Contact Beam) will end up giving you bunches of extra cash. Turn that cash into upgrades for the weapons you do use, and you make out much better off.

I loved that part, was one of my fav things from the first game, nice to see it have a spiritual successor in a way. I was thinking about it actually
since you take a trip to to ishimura and see the old hunters holding tank, I half expected a hunter to jump out at me going through that place

Ah ok I knew that seemed familiar for some reason! I haven't played DS since it came out in 08 so it doesn't surprise me I forgot that lol.

Yeah for sure! I honestly was a bit frustrated about what weapons to use and found my constantly going back and forth between them. Towards the end of the game I found myself using the Force Gun and Contact beam the most, while Plasma Cutter and Pulse Rifle I used the rest of the time. The ammo thing was a bit frustrating because even though ammo drops are random, I seemed to always get ammo for guns I did not have or used! Tons of sawblades and flamer ammo and never once used that weapon so I always found myself buying ammo.

I played through DS1 last week in anticipation for this, and I finished DS2 at around 7am today. :)
I enjoyed the first (since I realized it wasn't an FPS, and you're SUPPOSED to be in a clunky set of armor-type stuff so you're not supposed to turn on a dime) and this one was a great successor.
I enjoyed it all, including the stuff already spoiler tagged above. :) The ties to DS1 were nice and made it feel like a fuller experience, not simply divided into two seperate games.
It had parts that reminded me of Batman:AA, and that wasn't a bad thing.
There were parts that weren't great, but they didn't detract from the experience.
They did a great job with it and I hope for more. :)
Played it with a 360 wireless controller, 1080p, maxed out, 5.1 surround and in the dark. Couldn't have asked for more!

I didn't care all that much for it in the first game - the mechanic of that part just didn't appeal to me. I'm not terribly mad about it making an appearance though, it's just that in the first game, they go well above and beyond to make it clear what you need in the situation.

If there's a signpost for it in the second, I didn't see it. It's possible - some of the other puzzle elements you'll get a call from someone if you seem to be taking too long on it, to serve as a clue - but you generally aren't going to waste all your ammo in those if you don't know what's going on.

I guess the major issue I had with the damned thing was that it seemed to be able to open doors with ease, as if it was me walking up to the door and hitting E. It was also peculiar to me that I ran into the cargo lift that took you up to the walkway that allowed you to reach the marker, and watched all 4 necromorphs chasing me, turn and run away. While reading up on the lore after the fact and it making sense now, in the game it really wasn't apparent to me that the marker itself once it has been "activated" appears to affect necromorphs and causes them to run away or die. But you are absolutely right, at least in the first game, it gave you some clue outside of just shooting it repeatedly, that the best thing to do was turn and run or lure it into something like the shuttle engines to incinerate it.

Have any of you looked into any of the movies or other games that tie into the series? My god after reading the wikia pages about the back-stories and how everything ties in, I can truely say that A LOT of time and though were put into this story and totally makes the games worth playing just for that aspect alone!

There were a couple of weapons that feel like they didn't belong in the game (sniper rifle, javelin, and maybe the detonator).. they just didn't seem practical for the situations you faced.

Luckily, there's several other awesome guns that fit about every needed situation. You can use the flamethrower to clear those little bastards out pretty quick, lol. Pulse rifle is always the defacto assault rifle, and of course you've got plasma rifles, ripper saws (fun fun!!), force guns/rail gun, contact beams, etc. Boy are they fun... and i looooove that force/rail gun. You buy the limited collectors edition, you get one to start the game with (and a slick security-level suit, too!)

But my favorite thing? Beating the living piss out of the necromorphs. They hugely improved your punches and stomps... you can even upgrade the damage for this through your suit. You mash the buttons faster, he stomps, kicks, and punches faster and faster, and its awesome to see his emotion bcoming more aggressive... you can hear him start screaming obscentities with every splatter and jaw break. I love that kind of detail.

They really did a amazing job with story and sycnhing everything together with the first. Plays out nice. They really tapped out in the human psyche for this one, stretching every emotion you could feel. There's things so horrfying, you want to stop and take a breath to get your sense out of the fright zone, but you don't want to put it down. It really gets under your skin at some points with the tense, spooky situations, and yet you'll keep playing because the action is just amazing and well paced.

Environments are extremely well balanced... you have your tight, claustaphobic corridiors, creepy tall tunnels and room to room deals, your wide open hangars and construction areas, and your lunar/space missions, labs, churches, living complexes and more. The tram scene, and the new zero-G gameplay is just smooth and phenomenal. There's a particular space scene that was phenomenal, as your literally projected at like 1000mph's in a free fall... I dont want to ruin it all. Very easy to spoil.

Levels and stuff are well balanced. I didn't find any dull moments. Nothing seemed repetive. If there was a scene where it was, i don't remember because 99.9999% of the game was just so epic.

honestly, the best way to play is 5.1 or better head phones or a damn good surrond, crank it up as reasonable as you can, play on the largest screen you can find with noone else around, at 1am in the morning, and if your lucky... you won't end up in a mental health facility or curled up crying by morning, lololol.

Seriously... don't pass this up. Drop the cash now. It's worth every penny. You'll regret not doing so.

this is all coming from someone who was only a minor fan at best of the first dead space, and considered the first one a "decent" survival horror game, if that tells you anything.

^ javelin is the most powerful gun in the game.

you can node farm in this game...

works near a node unlock room with a nearby savepoint.
1.unlock room
2. pickup loot, leave one item behind or drop something from inventory
3. save game and quit
4. load save, walk back to the node unlock room

sometimes it might not populate anything but if you rearrange your dropped item it will comeback.

i farmed like 30+ nodes on the last node room in lvl 15

I've made it to Chapter 9 or so, and having played the first one, I think this one is a LITTLE lacking in atmosphere by comparison. One of the big things is that in the first game, you really got the feeling of being totally alone in the dark on what used to be a good ship. The atmosphere was more tense; I remember being REALLY scared to go into any bathroom in the first game. However, in DS2 I'm only getting the "BOO!" scares when something jumps out me.

However, I'm totally glad I purchased it. It fucking rocks and I only wish it had MORE MORE MORE levels, complexity, and atmosphere.

I've been playing MP - anyone else? It's enjoyable and plays like a first-person Alien Swarm, with unlockables the more you play that make you much stronger. I'd recommend trying it out because I think it's easy to get addicted, but it doesn't have much longterm MP value.
