Yeah, if you're not looking for isolation, these are not a good set for you.

I've found them very nice for listening to music and not bothering people though (at night, on the bus, etc.)

I think in general, something that's good for music will be good at movies/games, but not always the other way around.

Could these cans be considered one of the best (for tonally accurate and clear music) for under 100-150? I'm looking at headphones and want to get the best I can for my budget. I plan on using these mainly unamplified on both the computer and portable players for music, movies, and the occasional game. TIA

These will play fine without and amp.

I think saying these are one of the best in the under $100 to $150 range would be fair.

I know there are a lot of great options in this pricerange though.

If you're looking for closed cans, these are definately a great set to get.

These will sound good without an amp, but significantly better with one. Particularly on computers or mobile (MP3/etc players), the output current is too low for optimal results.

For the price these are certainly good but barely even entry-level when it comes to audiophile headphones. In the sub$150 category a couple of you expressed interest in you ought to consider Sennheiser HD555 (or HD515 after modded' to open up their rear port more), or Grado SR80. The Grados are relatively less comfortable than average but accoustics complimentary to rock music. The Senns (555) are about as comfortable as it gets and more of a refined sound with some ambient soundstage- good for gaming.

In general you'll get more accurate sound with open headphones. For those that need closed cans though, these HD280 are a good choice.

I have these cans too but ever since I replaced my first pair (the headband cracked - check under the foam cover on yours) they haven't quite sounded the same. For some reason they sound underpowered. Would they sound better coming straight from the sound card or through the volume control of my Logitech Z560s?

I would say through the sound card. Did you replace the headband yourself, or did Sennheiser send you a refurbished HD-280?

I'm looking for an alternative to the hd 280 on eCost.com because they offered me free next day shipping and no handling costs on a similar product. The hd 515 that are selling for 51.94$ refurb. How do these two compare and is it worth it to make the purchase?

I've been doing a little looking, too, to find a alternative to these. I've read quite a number of good things on the HD497. They're like $60 at ecost but only $39 with free shipping at Amazon. FWIW....

IMO closed cans are better in most households than open ones, since you probably use them most at night, so no one can hear you (people sleeping, closed cans block outside noise, and prevents the outside from hearing you. Also, I think closed cans give you a more full and rich sound because of the design.

What exactly is closed cans? I guess I'm not up on all of the headphone lingo. Does that mean it goes all the way around your ear? Don't the HD497's do that?

Open headphomes are literally just that the cover the ear (called circum-aural) completely, and they are open t the air be it little holes that allow air to pass in and out of the inner chamber of the headphone that is created when the headphone cushion rests against your head. A closed headphone does not have those holes.
