Wow! That's a $50 drop in price from what I paid this summer. Might have to get a second pair to average down the unit cost.

When it comes to paying 100$ and higher for a pair of headphones, you really should go to a shop and try them out. People can say anything about a product, but the facts are, your needs are probably unique to yourself, and only you can truely decide which pair is actually better.

Would these be much more comfortable than HD 280 Pro's? And how do they compare in sound quality and otherwise?

Just as a note-
It appears that Sennheiser is going to be releasing a new version of the 555s that will be 50ohm and higher sensitivity (the current ones are 120ohm). This is likely the reason for amazon's sale. It's still a great deal, but future 555s may sound different depending on source.

i have both of these headphones in front of me. I prefer the hd555 because they're a bit more comfortable on my head and they do sound a bit crisper, but the hd280's have deeper bass. I can't wear the hd280's for too long, the top of my head begins to hurt. I believe its because the padding isnt thick enough, I can feel the plastic. If you have a lot of hair ontop I guess it wouldnt bother you. The cushioning on the hd555's are absolutely superb, has a nice velvetty feeling and they are a bit lighter than the hd280's.

The HD-280s are closed cans while these are open I believe. These would probably sound a bit better, but offer little isolation. The 280's isolate pretty well and as mentioned have crazy deep bass. However, the midbass is a bit weak in the 280's which is their primary weakness imo. I've never tried the 555's but like my 280's except for the weak bass. They aren't fully burned in tho and there are mods to help with the bass, so they may sound better after a while. The 280's are a little tight at first but don't seem to bother me too much except if I wear them for hours one of my ears is shaped wierd or something and hurts a little. It might be because of my glasses.

At moderate volumes, how loud are these compared to a closed design? Like if you're in a room with the door closed, is the sound audible to people outside the room just passing by? I'm assuming it's not THAT loud otherwise you'd probably be killing your eardrums.

Also, I'll only be using these for listening to music, and playing games on my computer. I have the HD280 Pro's now, but I think they're a little uncomfortable. As far as sound quality, I guess I'm not an expert of have a very discerning ear, but they sound pretty good to me, the 280's, guess it all depends on the source of the music you're listening to, and the thing powering it (SB Live! Value card atm).

I have Sennheiser HD280pro and SONY MDR-CD780, and tried Senn HD-580.
I think HD280pro has weak bass, but sounds ok otherwise. HD580 was very good for classical music because it could produce those bright sound very clearly without any added distortion. But I couldn't wear it for more than 2 hrs with my glasses. Among these I love SONY (about $110 on ebay) the best, because it is very comfortable to wear even with my glasses, and sounds better than 280. Also it was less harsh when you listen to pops and rocks. So, unless you are listening to a lot of Jazz and Classicals, consider MDR-CD780 too.

just my 2 cents

Why do people keep think this is not a closed design?

Are the pics at Amazon wrong? They look like closed cans.

AmEx is offering an Amazon wish certificate tomorrow at 11am pst. I don't know if this deal will last until you get the certificate; however, you can get 25% off with the AmEx deal. Check out the AmEx thread for more details.

They look like a great pair. I'd definitely pick one up if I didn't already have my SR80s (and I just got a pair of HD280 Pros from a friend for airplane listening).

Would you mind linking to this thread you're referring to? Perhaps my searching abilities suck, but I didn't see it with a quick scan over hot deals.
