I'm seriously considering that and a suitable motherboard as an intermediate upgrade between AXPland and A64ia. The overclock in that thread is amazing.

Can't wait for Fry's combo deals. :D

They already had a Sempron 3100+/motherboard for $159, but prices have dropped a lot on the CPU now.

Indeed, however I believe the ECS motherboards included with the Fry's combos aren't very overclocking friendly. The will probably let you increase the HTT Bus clock, but no voltage and limited memory/HTT multiplier adjustments.

i have an extra ECS board from the previous outpost 2800+ Barton deal. would the sempron be able to go there? or do i need a bios update on the ECS?

even if its only 99 bucks, if the ECS is gonna fry it, i dont wanna take that risk

It doesn't seem to hurt performance much in real apps and games. The xbit labs review shows it pretty close to the A64 2800+ when the 3100+ is at stock speed. Excellent for a $99 CPU.

If you don't need a 64 bit processor and few of us do right now then this is a great value. There is a possibility that these may be moved to 90nm in the future. I know I want one!

Depends on what types of applications you're working with. :)

For programming, and specifically debugging, I've found cache is quite useful since you're accessing a lot of small pieces of data over and over.

I agree, for gaming and such, the difference is probably not something you would notice, especially relative to the price.

Edit: BTW, I do agree this is a pretty hot deal too. :)

Sempr0n is Socket 754 and you have a Socket 462 board. Better not try it..

are they different? i never knew that. i have a asrock KV788 board that says it is made for barton but sempron compatible?

It's compatible with the 2800+ and lower Semprons.

I just paired a 3100+ with a Chaintech VNF3-250 for my sister. This board was highly rated by AnandTech and can be had for under $100. The best deal on the combo was at Microcenter. Sign up for their VISA card and get a $100 rebate on a cpu/motherboard combo. This saved her about $40 over Newegg's price.

It easily overclocked to 2ghz with stock cooling and some cheap pc2700. I'm sure it could have done much better, but it was for my sister and I didn't want to mess around too much.

Surprise --- Newegg has increased the price from $124 to $126 !!! An increase of 1.5% in less than two weeks ! The gouging program is working hard to take your money - I believe it's an automated algorithm implemented on a computer: it calculates the average order rate over a period of a few days, then it increases the price according to the order rate trend - if the order rate increases, the price will increase by at lease 5%, if the order rate stays the same, the price is increase by 1-2%, rounding to the closest .99 cents. Then it continues to monitor the order rate, and only drops the price (in smaller increments) if the order rate is decreased. Ingeniously evil, and despite this being legal in a free market, don't kid yourself that everyone else does it. Monarch still sells this CPU for the same $99.

Could be, both are good companies. I found newegg to ship quicker but Monarch to be alot more friendly and personal as you can actually call and talk to someone who speaks english.
