Hey there,

ive recently had a 1TB Seagate 7200.11 drive die on me. It powers up, and i can hear it spinning, but it refuses to be recognised in any of my family's computers, or even in an external enclosure. Im not sure what to do, as the place i brought it off told me to RMA it, but they wouldnt recover the data off it. Ive read that a few seagate drives were doing this, and seagate were offering free data recovery? I was wondering if this would apply to me - being from New Zealand - and would anyone have any recommendations on where to go from here? I would dearly love the data back, and also want it replaced under its warranty - runs out in 2013.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated as im a little lost with what to do. Thanks

Kind Regards,
Jared

Start by contacting Seagate's technical support. If the company is offering data recovery, they will be the ones to know what they can do and how to go about getting the help.

The resulfs of this search on Google may help, too.

I know it's just the obvious, but it's easier to do when it's not your problem. Hope it helps. :)

Does it show up in the computer's BIOS anymore? If it does, is the informaiton correct? And if it does show up in Windows Disk Management, what does Disk Management say about the drive?

The Firmware version of the drive is on the label on the top. What version is it?

Note that there've been a couple of different issues with the 7200.11 drives, including some "bad" Firmware, disks showing as 32 GB size, and "plain old hardware failures". Hopefully Seagate can steer you in the right direction.

As always, I don't recommend trusting any single hard drive or array of drives with your only copy of important data.
