DEAD Seagate 500GB (recertified) for $49.99

You should probably input that it's recertified.
Thanks, I added it to the title. I wasn't interested in it myself, but it smelled like a good deal. Maybe not so much then.

I probably wouldn't use one of these as a primary drive with no backup system, but I bought a 250GB refurb from Woot (same price) about 2.5 years ago and it's still running with no issues. Mostly used as secondary storage for HDTV recording (or at least it was until I got my 1.5TB drive yesterday...)

So 466GB of actual space for $55. That's about 12 cents per G. Not bad for storing media files. I was just planning on consolidating the contents of 2 of my HDs into one so I can use the smaller HD as a true image clone HD for backup.

BUT, you can get a brand new hitachi 500GB after MIR for the same price (plus tax) @ newegg. And for $20 more, you can get the newest generation of seagate (32MB cache & 5 year warranty).

yeah but not everyone needs 1.5 TB of storage.

why not?

geeks.com has this deal pretty frequently as well. I don't think I could ever buy a refurbished hard drive though
