I think the 3TB for $90 was a better deal, but that was after MIR saw it yesterday or 2 days ago on TD. I'm not sure if it is still live though.

Love TD's HDD deals, their rebates are 100% legit and usually arrive within only a few weeks. Received all 3 of mine which I filed in the last couple of months.

This 4TB drive for $140 is a pretty sweet deal if you hate dealing with rebates.

3 out of 4 HDDs I bought in the last 6 months were Seagate.

I haven't had issues with any of them so far.

Also, if you don't mind jumping through the hoops for a Total Defense rebate ($60), you can get a bundle with the 4TB Expansion drive, which has the ST4000DM000 inside of it.

I bought this a couple weeks ago and shucked the HDD out of the enclosure. I stress tested it and it seems to be doing just fine.

At only $10 more for less hassle and a longer warranty, it might be worth it to go with the OP's deal, but I figured I'd mention it anyway.

hard numbers > anecdotal evidence
http://techreport.com/news/25940/hard-drive-reliability-study-names-names

dont think the seagate 3 and 4 TB nas drives were part of study.

If you scrolled up on the page you linked, you would have seen that Seagate 3 TB and 4 TB drives were included:

In fact, if you read the Backblaze article itself, you would find that they claim the 4 TB Seagate to be one of their preferred drives to buy for their storage pods. It doesn't have the endurace of the WD Red or the Hitachis, but it it still does well.

Also, it should be mentioned that one can only take so much from the Backblaze data, because they don't mention how the different drives are put into their varied storage pod versions (later ones have better vibration reduction and cooling) or what kind of work load each has seen. We can hope it would be equivalent, but those data aren't made available.

And I have no idea why Hitachi is out of the business!

Pity, can't find new 5K3000's or 5K4000's anymore at reasonable prices.

the tech report article doesnt break down model number or application market, just 4tb. the backblaze page only indicates desktop 4tb .15brand 5600rpm or business 7200rpm 4tb. the newer 4tb nas werent part of the study.

their preference is based on lower error accumulation with the caveat being that they may fail in longevity like the rest of the seagate 7200 line.

most of the people here will be more interested in longevity, where seagate is notably weaker.

Toshiba=Hitachi?

hitachi sold its assets to WD, their 2.5" drives are being used in WD's hgst tauro line.

toshiba got the 3.5" drive assets because of EU anti monopoly ruling.
