Dead: Seagate 2TB 5900RPM HDD - $89.97 AR (or less)

the reviews are pretty scary. really great price though, but yeah i am not sure its worth the risk if something with betetr reviews is only say $20 more.

Honestly, I can't bite. I sent back two 1.5tb's three different times. I finally sold one sealed after RMA, but the other one needs RMAd again!

Everyone says "old firmware, problem fixed", but I sent back those very drives claimed to be fixed.

Seabait!

UGG!

In order we have seen Hitachi's cheapest 2TB drive go on sale, Samsung's cheapest 2TB drive go on sale, and Seagate's cheapest 2TB drive go on sale.

All the while the 2TB drive I covet most to fill my media server, has no hot deals!

Darn you Western Digital and your expensive but amazing green drives! Go on sale!!!!!

I was looking at 2tb the beginning of last week, i got this but got it through bing from J&R for around 130. Not only did the reviews make me stay away from the seagate but the speed as well.

these large, slower spinning drives really aren't that slow

besides, the vast majority will be using such drives for media storage, something speed is not needed for at all.

small but fast boot drive(s) + slower but super massive storage drives = win win because of performance + less noise.

I use mine as an external so I wont be running it all the time thus id rather have increased speed when I need it because the noise wont be an issue. Plus this hitachi is dead quite, I have been filling it up this whole week via external casing but havent screwed the casing on just hooked it up. Now if you want to argue that because of the higher speed there might be more wear and tear then maybe but if you were just using it as a back up it shouldnt matter. faster = always better 😉

I was willing to take a chance on the 1TB model, but, TBH, I'm pretty scared of these 2TB drives, and not just the Seagate ones.

I've read that some 2TB HDD's can't work in XP due to sector problems. Is that true of all 2TB's or just a few particular models?

I thought 2TB will work in WinXP, its just that it will take an extra step to make it work. What it won't do is plug-n-play. Anyone?

2TB, as long as it uses the standard 512byte per sector, will work fine with XP. It's HDs larger than 2TB (the limit of MBR partitions) that won't. (And 4KB sector HDs, like the WD "Advanced Format".)
