Are higher read/write speeds of any benefit to the 3DS or is it all the same regardless? I imagine the console's reading capabilities is the limiting factor but can't be certain.

I know nothing about gaming consoles at all. This is kind of an obvious question, but are there published specs for its external storage interface anywhere? But the speed of the interface itself aside, I'd tend to assume they write little if any data to the cards, in which case even if they can benefit from fast read speeds, there's no point in spending what is still a premium for high write, as well as read, speeds. These days you can buy cards with pretty damned fast read, though generally pathetic write, speeds for not very much money...

I tend to think of fast-write cards being useful first and foremost for still image/video capture where the ability to record high-resolution video or capture rapid consecutive images absolutely requires it, as well as simply as a matter of convenience when using them with portable devices for things like movie or music storage, where it can take forever (and it always seems even longer than it really is!) to copy large files or huge numbers of smaller files to the card, even if the read speed required for video (much less music) playback is nowhere near the rated read speeds of cards that typically have fast write speeds as well. But I guess they could be of use for tablets/phablets, too, especially as processing power and the sophistication of apps increases, with people starting to expect to be able to do even things like (some degree of) video editing on them...
