I just purchased a lite-on for $18.99 and thought I got a smokin deal... It's just a buck, but..... well... you know

HOT DEAL!

I'll pass though. I still have my $60 IDE Sony DVD Burner. It does 16x and dual layer, So it's still extremely serviceable.

Great price. In for 1. I'm a little concerned about the ratings - 31% one egg. That's pretty high for a Samsung burner.

I have two of these and I want others to know:

These drives are the absolute best drives if you plan on using a Lian Li case with a metal drive cover. The circular buttons perfectly match up with the Lian Li bay cover buttons without extra padding.

If you have a Lian Li case and you hate how your drive works with it, get this instead.

Mine came in today. My wife tells me the shipping label shows it coming from the Newegg RMA Department. I didn't pay for a recert drive... I paid for a new one. Hmm...

They ship new stuff out of that wharehouse too. I have gotten new items from that very location.

If it sounds too good to be true...

Well, all I can say is that I've had one of these for about a year. Bought it at MicroCenter as a bare OEM drive for $19.99. Has worked flawlessly. Reads everything, has burned numerous discs--CD and DVD--without a single coaster.

I've put these drives into a bunch of builds I've done for others....over a couple of dozen.....and have had no complaints from anyone. The systems are running XP, Vista, and Win7, so a variety of OS's.

I don't know about all those "complaints" on Newegg. A LOT sound like problems other than a DVD drive can give..... "It is not Samsung. Some funny name..."---this got one egg and it's a TSST, which is one of Samsung's corporate entities.

Or "Takes hours to burn any type of media." Odd, mine takes no time to burn anything I ask of it using Nero, Ashampoo, PowerISO, UltraISO, among other programs.

As for DOA's, etc., things happen, but most of those errors sound like people burning downloaded movies, operator error, etc.

Anyway, thanks OP---I bought another tonight because of the price, the reliability I've experienced, and it's always good to have a spare around.

Toshiba Samsung Storage Technology

Basically a few years back Samsung and Toshiba merged their optical drive divisions to create TSST. The resulting drives are often still branded Samsung. AFAIK there is no new "Samsung" drive that is not a TSST.
