[DEAD] Saitek A100 MySpkr Personal Stereo Speaker - $12.99 (FS + no rebate)

I bought a couple of these from woot a few weeks ago. At this price point, I think it's a great deal. At $99 retail or $69 street when these were first released, um NO. At $25ish to $30 it would still be pretty good. At this price (same as woot but FS here), definite deal.
 
Out of curiosity, how did you find the sound quality? I've had cheapo mini-speakers before that sounded like a pair of tin cans, so I'm normally a little skeptical of small portable speakers.

I don't normally use speakers at all (either headphones or the sound output on my LCD TV), but I'm wondering if I should get in on this deal myself -- maybe attach the thing onto my SFF. I can't really get a good sense of how big it is by looking at the picture.

Well this is tough to quantify as this is the first pair of portables I've used. If I had to guess, they sound like the cheapest 2-piece (no sub) pc speakers from a decent brand/maker like Altec or Logitech... maybe a little worse.

The emphasis here is "portable." These were not designed to be used as full time speakers at a computer desk. I mean they COULD be used there, but they just won't sound as good as dedicated speakers from a decent brand. These really are meant for the room in your apt/house that doesn't have an iPod dock w/speakers. Or in a hotel room on a biz trip cuz you don't want sore ears from hours of earbud wearing.

Thanks for the input :thumbsup:. The Amazon reviews look pretty good too, so I ended up biting 😀. Amazon said it was around 2 lb, so it should be pretty easy to carry around along with my SFF.

*crosses fingers* I hope they ship it from the PA warehouse; I might get it tomorrow afternoon if they do.

Hi, I was wondering if anyone could answer a quick question for me on this? I was wondering if it stays on even w/o an active signal going to it. The reason I ask is I bought a Logitech portable speaker for when I'm on the road (which is quite often) and I want to use it with my MP3 player as an alarm clock, but it shuts off after like 15 minutes of no signal. 🙁

Hopefully someone knows the answer!

It's not too clear if it will still power off after a certain period if you keep the attached device on.
 
Well I just tried some demo mp3 alarm software for my treo and it appears that the speaker *will* power back on when triggered by an alarm.

Now to clarify - the manual states that the speaker has a 3 minute auto shutoff feature. However, it's really a standby mode that'll be waiting for a signal. The quickie demo I did involved just 10 mins of standby time. The main caveat is I don't know if it'll go into a full blown shutdown - that may be unable power back on by an alarm - after 8+ hours overnight.
 
Got this from a semi-official review of this product. Thought you guys might appreciate it.

"The Saitek My Spkr is considerably larger (roughly the size of a thick checkbook or a Treo) than the B-Flex and is powered by four AAA batteries. It's got an odd, oblong shape that is actually quite stylish, with a glossy black casing and metal grille over the two neodymium drivers. A tiny stand in back lets you prop it up to direct the sound forward.

Again, it uses a standard audio connection, so you just plug the cable (several are included) into your line-out or headphone jack. This is good news if you want to use the My Spkr with an iPod or other audio player, though it also works fine with a laptop.

So how's the sound? It's great, very loud and crisp, noticeably better than integrated notebook speakers when put head to head. The bass response is the big draw: There's a bass port on the side that really does up the low-frequency performance in music and movies. But highs are clear, and dialogue comes through just fine as well.

My only complaint comes in the relative touchiness of the system. Jostle it a bit and the speaker has a tendency to turn itself off. There's no power switch: The My Spkr turns on when you plug a cable into it, which seems like a neat way to simplify the device, but in reality I'd prefer a button I can push."

I noticed that a Saitek rep posted a comment at the bottom with a link to their official online store. There's apparently an AC adapter available for this thing...$10 not including shipping :frown:. Surely most people have a 12V AC adapter lying around they could use instead, if they don't want to use batteries.

Anyways, so, apparently I ordered it too late yesterday for them to ship it the same day 🙁.
