  • HomePlug AV, IEEE802.3/3u
  • Ethernet port
  • Up to 500 Mbps

Note that the ones on sale, are "Shipped and Sold by Newegg". Don't end up buying from a 3rd-party seller for more, when they have sold out.

These are not the newest kit, AFAIK, but they are fairly inexpensive for a pair. If you were considering trying powerline networking rather than wifi, or in conjunction with, probably now is the time.

Note that, in general, these powerline kits CAN be encrypted, but often ship without it enabled, so that CAN BE an issue in apt buildings, if two tenants use compatible units, and neither one of them switches on encryption, you can end up piggy-backing on someone else's internet connection. Then again, maybe you want that, I don't know... (whistle).

Edit: I see it now, these are REFURBISHED. That explains the price. Still, probably will work OK.

I have some of the 600av by either tplink or trendnet as well as several 500av nano by Netgear. These units will give you a realistic and solid 50Mbps when in ideal configurations, and at least a solid 30Mbps in less than ideal conditions. The biggest benefit you get is very low latency, very close to wired ethernet, so these are great for latency or reliability sensitive applications. Plus, setup is literally plug and play in 5 minutes, no lie.

And at $20 shipped, these are frankly a steal. You can't even get used ones this cheap. The reviews there are also dead-on, so read those too to get an idea if this is the right fit for what you need.

Oh, and one thing I forgot to add for those that have vlans on their network, generally powerline units will respect and pass vlan tags, so you won't break your vlans using powerlines.

That's basically what I was thinking, that $20/pair was really inexpensive for 500Mbit/sec powerline. (Edit: These are REFURBS. I missed that the first time around. Still a decent deal, I feel.)

Good to know, I didn't even read the reviews yet.

Edit: OK, looks like much like wifi, "real world" performance is a mere fraction of the listed "theoretical max" specifications. Although, a steady 30-50Mbit/sec, with low-latency, is probably better than wifi that is spotty or at the edge of coverage.

Yep, the powerline speed ratings are pie in the sky like wifi ratings are, but they can get some decent speeds for how simple they are to deploy. I'm actually posting over a powerline connection now. In fact, now that I think about it, some of our more critical infrastructure runs off powerlines since the power outlets are more convenient locations for an ethernet jack.
