Dead Pixels

On LCD's I've always been under the impression that dead pixels only happen in the case of a manufactuar defect and they come with them, they dont appear say after 3 months of use or something like that. However I've heard otherwise although only from retailers trying to sell service plans i was curious if there is the least bit of truth to this.

I had one appear on my laptop after about a year.

They can die during the life of the unit, my laptop has a few, but nothing too bad so I dont worry about it
