Hmmm... Maybe this is why my CDR-5W48 only said 12X rewrite in nero....

Below is a copy->paste(i.e. stolen) from a review of the Lite-on LTR-48246s , a 48x/24x/48 drive

CD Re-Write Test
The re-write test did cause some issues. I believe the issue was with the media and not the drive. There seems to be an issue with the CD-RW media I was using. I only had 10x media available to me. So I went to the store and the fastest I found was only 12x. I came home and looked all over the internet and again the fastest anyone sold is 12x CD-RW media. So I tried the rewrite test with my 10x media. Nero would only go as fast as 12x with my 10x disk. I made sure I had the latest version of Nero which I did, and I checked for a firmware upgrade. There was an upgrade to the firmware, so I updated my unit. There was no change. I could still only rewrite at 12x. I even disabled SMART-BURN (which automatically will detect the proper burning speed of the media). There was no change with SMART-BURN disabled. I had 4x CDRW disks, but those would only re-write at 4x. The 10x media I was using was TDK. I did however contact Lite-on and they were more than happy to send me 24x media which did work at that speed. They also wanted a detailed description of the problem. So at least they were concerned regarding this. But it looks like for rewriting at 24x you may need true 24x media which is not yet readily available. Once I got that straightened out I was more than pleased with the results. I rewrote 631 MB's of data in 4 minutes and 45 seconds. This is the fastest I've ever seen a drive rewrite data. Very pleased indeed.

Heh, we may never know untill someone here gets some 24X CD_RW's :(

Is it really dead? My local Staples still has the CD-RW drive for $39.99 after rebate. The rebate expires on 10/26. I'm not sure about the modem, didn't care about it.

I got my Lite-On on the mail yesterday and it works wonderfully. I'm guessing that all the PD drives are Lite-Ons. What a great deal. You can't beat upgrading from a 16x burner to a 48x burner for free!

I dunno where y'all are getting this CDR-5W48 from. The drive I got is an LT48125W, which is 12x RW.

I did this deal at B&M and mailed all the rebates last week (the cashier gave me 2 receipt copies to send with the rebates). I even used a $10 giftcard with the purchase.

I submitted the rebate online thru staplesrebates.com and sent the paperwork the day after. I just checked and my status says my rebates are valid and checks will be mailed in the next 30 days. So don't worry, the rebates will come :)

That's not correct, even when you submit your rebate on-line and still have to send they a "receipt" and the "UPC code" and yes, your packing slip is your receipt.

one last time..PacificDigital is reboxxer/rebadger..box will be marked with the minimum numbers but always possible with PD to get something a little better in the box..looking right now at a 16x10x40 marked PD box..I know for certain that its contents is this which has a 12x rewrite speed..so the CDR-5w48 which is shown at several places as a 24x rewrite ..and posted above is a link to someone who actually rec'd media capable of 24x and tested with a 24x capable drive..but I have not seen said speed nor that speed of media yet..

I don't know if they are the same or not...

I was just entertaining the thought that maybe the reason our's wasn't showing up as 24x Re-write was for the same reason's as the LTR-48246.

Just got my drive from UPS. Any brave souls have any updates on the firmware updates? 52x24x52?

What about Mt. Rainier Support?

Yes, mystic, I realized this after I posted for mine online. Should have done that before I spoke since it has been a while since my last staples rebate. A great deal.

On the outside of my box it has a 12 digit serial number, but says part number: U-30127 or U-30127-RW. Does anyone know what kind of drive I have? It says nothing about Nero on the outside of the box. I'd like to know before opening it because if it's not a Liteon or AOpen, I'll probably just Ebay it.

TIA,

Sal

Though my CDRW shipped in a PD box, it was not re-tagged on the drive...the drive carries a Lite-On IT Corp. label showing Model #LTR-48125W and a manufacture date of May 2002.

I think one other manufacturer does this. They sell both a re-tagged version of their drive with their name on it and an actual Liteon drive with the Liteon name and drive number on it.

When I opened my box, the drive number is CDR-5w48 and it did come with Nero. That's gotta be just a PD number and I don't know if it means anything. One thing is for sure, the drive looks identicle to other Liteon drives that I've gotten through Cendyne packages. I bet if I flash this drive to a Liteon firmware, it would be a Liteon drive even if it's not already. Pacific Digital doesn't write their own firmware anyway, do they?

I was lucky to pickup two of these CDRW's...the second one was re-tagged (now that I crack the box) and says Pacific Digital Corp. Model #CDR-5W48, Serial Number 211225007XXX - manufactured in June 2002...both drives are identical in every way except the tag...right down to the white colored circle seal on the side...

heh, read Mysticman1's Posts in this thread about the CDR-5W48. there seem's to be a little mystery about them. :)

I've read the whole thread. What are you referring to exactly? It looks just like a Liteon to me. The drives that I remember that were like this were the Verbatim drives. Some of the drives were marked Verbatim and others Liteon, but they are both made by Liteon and when you flashed the drive with Liteon firmware, it would become a Liteon drive basically. This sounds like the same case with this drive. I wonder if the firmware is the same though and just renamed by PD?

Thanks again,

Sal

A couple of the links he posted say the CDR-5W48 has a 24x Re_write speed, but I don't think anyone knows for sure .

I flashed mine to the lite on VS08 firmware with no problems. I think my firmware was VSG3? Before.

But as allways, Objects in the mirror are larger than they appear......Or wait...

Oh yea.. Your milage May very. :D
