actually the deal is still not all that bad... $800 for the P4 3.2GHz and the canterwood mobo, considering those two costs $900 by itself...
but it's still nowhere as close as a hot deal as when it was $573

Ok. I admit that I sold my 3.2. Has anyone had any luck putting celerons in these? I've got a 1.5 and a 1.7 on the shelf, and neither of them will work.

Windows XP should always have 512mb or more, just fyi.

I wish I could afford 512MB in my beautiful little RDRAM using machine.

Geesh, I almost decided to sell my system myself, but Intel is supposed to not have a faster chip out until the very end of the year (if that even).

I just couldn't bring myself up to give away bragging rights. I mean, how long does top of the line STAY top of the line for that long.

got my 3.2 some time ago, didn't have time to play with it till recently...earlier I booted it up, went into the bios, did a little configuring, etc, and set it aside - that was with some new hardware already installed (1 stick 512MB crucial PC2700, ti 4200, sony DVD+/-RW, Lite-on 52x cdrw) everything looked fine. today I added my adaptec SATA RAID card and raptors and a second NIC, and poof, I turn it on, it just hangs on the dell logo screen and the progress bar just alittle ahead of the starting point. ctrl+alt+del does nothing. made a floppy to flash the bios, nada. tried swapping around all manner of IDE cables, power connectors, took out the raid card and just about everything ese....

tech support seems to be on vacation (typical dell)...anyone have any ideas?

I sold mine processor on ebay.

It only got up to $460 the first time on a 3 day auction, so I listed it on a 5 day auction and it sold 2 hours later at my buy it now price of $575.

I wonder what the cheapest processor I can put in it is?

On the 875 chip it has to be a 533 or 800MHZ CPU I would suggest taking a look at the 2.4C's selling for $167 on Newegg.

I took the 128MB PC2700 ram out... so I just have 2 sticks of 512MB PC3200.. both from the same place...

well i'm with dell tech support now... he seems a bit short tempered.. and he doesn't seem to have much of a clue on how to help me out.. as do i............... eeekk... i need to ship this system out today....

The SPD on the new memory module must only programmed for PC2700 speeds. I would guess it is probably overclocked PC2700 rather than PC3200. This would not really be a problem if you were running this in an overclocked system because you can override the default values on the module by programming whatever speed and cas latencies you want via the BIOS but with an OEM system you're screwed if you want to run at the higher speeds.

Run Sandra mainboard test and you should see a section that about the memory that tells what speed the SPD is programmed for.

Or the program CPUz has a memory tab where you can see what speed the memory is programmed for.

Good luck!!

you sure you can change the bios settings to change the ram speed? i tried.. it doesn't let you change it...

and yes this is 3200... it detects 400MHz in my athlon system.. and in sandra, it says it's PC3200 ram... but it says it's running at 2x 320MHz... with the 4:5 divider on..

As I mentioned above, you can only change the BIOS setting IF you're using an overclocked system (like Asus, Abit, etc). You're right...the Dell system can't be overclocked via the BIOS and the memory speed/dividers and cas setting can't be changed.
