I may try to get in on this for teh -r's. Many people who burn PS2 swears by them. Me on the otherhand swear by Ritek G03's, never had any problems (that wasn't my fault) with over 300 burned. I bought 2 5 packs of Maxell (CMC) and only 1 out of 5 work on my v7 PS2, the one I burned for my Apex DVD Player froze switching chapters (then I burned the same title set to a Ritek & it worked flawlessly).

Anyways, what I'm getting at is can anyone else confirm if the -R's are dark purple dye or light purple, and also the manufacture info? Thanks.

For what it's worth, I got in on this deal with a price match at best buy. I noticed that in the DvD-R media, Verbatim had two types of 15 disc spindles. If my memory serves me right, ( and when your older then dirt, thats taken with a grain of salt ) the large letters of "DVD-R" was in yellow and the disc were made in Tiawan, and the other package the large letters "DVD-R" were in white, and the disc were made in Singpore. I got two of the packs made in Singapore, the disc's are a deep purple and do state DataLifePlus. Also the label had printed Verbatim 2002. The Tiawan version had stated Verbatim 2003. my guess is that the yellow letter pack was more recent, but perhaps made by CMC as stated above, then again, I may have gotten the inferior made ones .... have not had a chance to check them out

Take Care

Picked up some of the DVD-R(DVD-R written in yellow). They are CMC Mag, 2x. So far 3 for 3 on burning DVD Backups at 2x on a Pioneer 105 drive.

The dye color on these is dark purple, almost identical to the dye color on a Ritek G04.

My office depot is out, but I bought the verbatim dvd+r 4x certified 15 pack at best buy the other day and had no problems with them. They all burnt flawlessly at 4x with my cendyne burner. IMHO verbatim is the best...good deal if you can get it!

I've used about 10 verbatim's DVD+R's on my NEC 4x burner. Not one coaster. Also have used about 30 Fuji DVD+R's without a coaster either. A very popular DVD burning forum did a user rating of DVD media. They rated the Verbatim's the best then Fuji. I tend to agree from what I have seen as well.

Where else can you get high quality DVD+R's for a little over a $1 a piece? Even crap media costs $1.50/per and you have to buy 100 pack on a spindle, no cases! And to make tihs better, no stinkin rebates! THIS DEAL KICKS A$$

Thanks for the heads up CtK!

Yesterday, I ordered (6) 15 DVD+R online for store pickup and used a $20 coupon. Online didn't provide "buy 1 get 1 free" so the cost came to 196.62 - 20 = 176.62 + tax. Went to the store today for pickup and price match. Result was (6) 15 DVD+R for 98.31 - 20 = 78.31 + tax or less than $0.94 per disk with tax. No problems with purchasing 6, pricematch, or coupon.

Awesome.. I wish I would've bought more now. I bought 4 online and then took the receipt into my local OD today. They returned the entire order then rang up the original deal and then threw my $20 coupon on. My total was around $48 for 4 of these with tax. Heck of a deal if you ask me. Now all I need is to decide on a burner. I have one still new and unused, but I'll probably sell it and grab one of those black dual format drives if I can find one for a decent price. Does anyone know where I can get a black dual format drive for a decent price?

Here is an update to my previous post on the two current versions of Verbatim DvD-R media. To recap I purchased the White Letter " DVD-R " spindle pack. I ran the program DvDInfo ( freeware, excellent ) and received the following readout. The media code is TaiyoYuden, and the media type is v2.0. Finally the Media I.D. is stated as 2.0x. Sure is funny that one company has several types of the same media, DvD-R on the market at the same time. If these are the good ones, then I guess i better consider picking up some more. Take care, thanks for reading and hope it is of some help. Oh by the way, my burner is a Cendyne ( Pioneer A05).

I just went back to Office Depot to pick up those spindles and, of course, they were all out.

Then, I learned that they were substituting six of Memorex 5 pack disks (w/ case) for those two spindles of Verbatim 25 disks for the same price.

From what I could see after going through the shelf, there were two different version of the same 5 pack disks for both DVD-R and DVD+R as follow.

DVD-R
- Made in Japan
- Made in Taiwan

DVD+R
- Made in Taiwan with 4X printed on the front and back
- Made in Taiwan with 1-2.5X printed on the back

Because, when I was travelingin Japan, I saw more than one stores selling Memorex DVD+R disks cheap saying that they were very picky with burners, I just went with 6 packs of trusted Made in Japan DVD-R disks.

When the casher scaned 6 packs of then, the register automatically deducted the balance and rang up with $32.77+tax amount. Therefore, this could possibly be a national deal. I got mine from Burbank, CA store by Ikea.

God damn it.

The Memorex DVD-R disks I got said 'Made in Japan' on the outer paper box, but the individual disks say 'Made in Taiwan'.

They are made by Prodisc and 2X.

Memorex is crap when it comes to DVD+R/-R

I was able to pickup 4 spindles of Verbatim DVD-Rs at the office depot at Baileys Crossroads
was able to use a $10 coupon as well. Not a bad deal.

Picked up a couple of the +R 15 packs today at my local OD and they were marked 4X.
Passed on the -R as they were written in yellow letters and had no indication of the speed. Probably going back for more of the +R's tomorrow. I don't have the multi-format drive that I've ordered yet, but hopefully these will work OK. If not Office Depot has a pretty good return policy. I asked when checking out and was told that if they were incompatible with my burner to bring them back in for a refund including the opened pack and the failed disc. And Office Depot does not charge a restocking fee. Pretty good company. Have never failed to get a rebate from them in timely fashion, and have been fully refunded when something didn't work as promised and I wanted a refund.

I don't think people should make the gross assumption that "made in Taiwan" is bad, and "made in Japan" is good.

I do not think ALL Made in Taiwan's are bad, but you have a lot higher chance of getting incompatible disks.

As far as Made in Japan desks are concerned, pretty much all the companies making DVD disks there are reputable, large multinational corporations, so it will be the easiest indicator if you want a safe bet.

Those Japanese companies also make their disks in Taiwan, Singapore, and other places, and those disks should be made under the same quality requirements as their Japan made disks.

A reputable Japanese computer magazine did an extensive test of DVD-R disks comparing Japanese brands and Taiwanese brands, and the result showed a clear performance difference between them.

I think the Memorex DVD+Rs are made by Ritek under some sort of contract from Ricoh because they have the "RICOHJPN" manufacturer ID. Memorex DVD-R could be made several different producers including CMC, Prodisc or if you're lucky Taiyo Yuden. I would rate the Taiyo Yuden DVD-Rs as the best quality followed by the Ricoh/Ritek DVD+Rs.

Just FYI, so far, the substituted Memorex Made-in-Japan-on-the-box-but-Made-in-Taiwan-Prodisc-inside DVD-R disks are working fine with my Sony combo drive as well as my Panasonic and Apex stand-alone players. They also play fine on my PS2.

After 3 tries I got OD to give me the Memorex DVD+Rs Tiawan. Earlier in the week I did get a raincheck so i'll use if to get the Verbatims 4x when they come in. All in all this a heck of a deal, DVD+R at $1.10, best price I've come across.

Called verbatim today.. they say the datalife plus use the blue azo dye, where as datalife use a different dye.

Only difference according to the tech was compatibility in some recorders... that is the datalife plus had some issues in some panasonic and memorex recorders.

could someone else please call 'em and see if you get the same answer?

800-538-8589 option #3

thanks
