Update 02/24/04: I ordered this just before I posted this thread (02/17/04 around 5PM)- system arrived today and despite all the rumors - IT's A PRECOTT :) :) :) - good luck to everybody else who got in on this deal

Edit: 2/19/04: Deal further cooling since 15% coupons expired yesterday (at least this will take care of the coupon request issue and give the mods a rest :))- downgraded title to "hot", changed price for quoted configuration (now $819ish).

Edit: 2/18/04 - 10:38PM EST: Deal seems to be cooling: Just verified that they subbed the Prescott with a Northwood now- both on the site and in details when one puts it in the cart

Dell SB currently has a 3GHz prescott PIV Dimension 8300 with free 8xDVD+R for $649+tax shipped after $150MIR (price is 799). Add something to get it over $899 (e.g the 15" LCD which is discounted by $150 and adds "only $170) or a better graphics card or MS Orifice ($99) and something else. Now apply one of the 15% discount coupons (hope you got one or know where to find them...).

Now the total (with 15"LCD)is 969-$145(15%)+tax= 824+tax-$150MIR = $674+tax for a state of the art Desktop with 8xDVD+R and an LCD worth close to $300 alone (egay).

Edit 2/19/04: coupon expired thus price with 15"LCD (+$170) goes up to $819+tax - no need anymore to exceed $899, one could simply buy the base system without additions for $649AC +tax
Yo

EVEN HOTTER!!!

If you have previously signed up for Small Business coupons/announcements from Dell, they sent you a 15% off $899 coupon that WORKS with this combo. Each coupon is limited to one use, so if you have it, don't give it away if you're wanting to buy a system!

Select the basic system, upgrade the memory to 512 and/or add a Radeon 9800 Pro for $140, etc.

HOT HOT HOT

(In my book, anyway!)

Quick question, Is a DVD+R able to record CD-r's? I really want the dvd r but I also need to write cd's too so will I need to add a CD-RW?

awesome, I think I'm going to jump on this. But here's a question for you guys. How long do you think it'll take for windows 64bit to become the standard for home use? I'm betting on 2-3 years, I know the final release of XP64 is a way's out there but I'm betting as soon as XP64 hits it'll only take a year PC makers to start selling/marketing 64 processors especially once intel comes out with their chips, I know compaq already sells a amd64 desktop for home use(it's in last sundays compusa ad). This is the first time 6 years that I'm buying a compleatly new preassembled comptuer I normally just upgrade a chip/mobo here and video card there. I'm already starting to think when I'll have to upgrade this new computer.

I think 2-3 years is probably true. One has to consider that not only the hardware and OS have to be 64bit (and mature), but also the application software - otherwise there is limited advantage in 64 bit. If you are prepared to "play" with Intel and Billy Gates' 0.9 and 1.0 releases you may be able to do something earlier, but for a stable architeture I'd say 2-3 years. OTOH 32 bit processing with 1MB cache, 800MHz memory and 7200-10000rpm HDDs is pretty fast and solid right now.

Caught this deal on FW and jumped right on it. Couldn't resist getting a 3GHz PC with the new Prescott chip, 8x DVD+RW, Radeon 9800 Pro, 17" CRT, 40GB & 256MB PC3200 for $650 AC/AR. Now if only the price of the system + LCD would have been less, it would have been even hotter!

Some quick Q's -- Intended for several secretaries and me to use. Average to high end business use, greatest CPU stress being some graphics work. Current guess for config: Baseline-cheapest everything, except: XP Pro, (add'l RAM if needed to buy elsewhere cheaper), midlevel sound card, modem (just in case network fails and for direct faxing), and remote control (I have have no idea why-buy hey, only 20 bucks). Free DVD and Monitor. We have an external USB ?1 Floppy drive and a 64 MB pen drive.

We plan dual 19" Sony CRT config.

1-is faster proc (over 3.0) worth the extra $$$?

2-xp home or is xp pro worth the extra $70.00? Some have said to get Pro, even for the extra cost.

3-any recs for which software choices to make, or just stick with least expensive choices?

4-is 512 MB enough memory for average user?

5-Others have noted poor service from Dell, so I assune no need to buy extra - useless - service. Any upgrades worth getting when ordering? Axim? We have UPS's, printers, etc.

Thanx

Yeah Buddy. I remember my brother getting a 40mb Seagate for a steal of a deal at $420 for his IBM PC. Yes... when Dell was just a mailorder house hawking AST memory cards for PC's called PC's Limited.

If I look in the rear of the garage I might find an original Commodore PC (an intel 286 running at 10mhz):Q

end reminiscence...

No- get more memory or a faster HDD first faster processors are notreally noticeable in office environment(definitely not 3.2 or 3.4)

2-xp home or is xp pro worth the extra $70.00? Some have said to get Pro, even for the extra cost.

pro and home are on the same code base (no advantages like higher stability with pro). I buy pro only if I need one of the following features that pro has: remote desktop, log-on to a domain, enhanced user management(more groups) multiprocessor support. Most of these are not typically used in a small office.

3-any recs for which software choices to make, or just stick with least expensive choices?

Get MS-Workssuite - for only $19 it includes MS-Word, a bunch of other possibly useful software (street and trips, money, encarta, photosuite) and it makes you elligible to buy other MS-Office products as upgrades when needed (rather than the much more expensive full version).

4-is 512 MB enough memory for average user?
Any discount codes or coupons for memory (I know these cannot be posted here, PM please :))? The reason I ask is that a long time ago there was a 15% or so discount on crucial as an anandtech reader. I do not seen it on the site now.

For normal applications on an average office system the sweet spot appears to be between 256 and 512. Unless you do high level graphic design, video editing or other highly memory intensive tasks, you will not notice a difference.

5-Others have noted poor service from Dell, so I assune no need to buy extra - useless - service. Any upgrades worth getting when ordering? Axim? We have UPS's, printers, etc.

I've asked this question before but never got an answer. I do work for a buisness and I'm the one that purchases computers. How do you get on the Dell mailing list. Do you have to call them up and setup a Buisness account with them to get onto it? Thanks

Just go to their website at Dell SB and set up an account(use your name or your companiies' name as company name, then in this case leave the checkmark on the "we may send you promotional offers from time to time..." phrase and wait
