Dead now $32.99 La Crosse BC700 $24.99 Amazon

Except for the color, the BC700 looks exactly the same as the better-known BC900. However, it is actually a "handicapped" version of the old charger. Its charging current can only go up to 700mA in three steps (200/500/700). The BC900, on the other hand, can go up to 1000mA for 4 cells, or 1800mA for 2 cells. Also the BC900 package includes eight NiMH rechargeable cells (4 AA and 4 AAA), eight C/D cell adaptors, and a carrying case. The BC700 does not come with any bonus items.

This is not to say that the BC700 is a bad product. Quite the contrary, it is better than any other NiMH AA chargers in the market except for BC900 and Maha MH-C9000. If you can find it at a substantial saving (like maybe 30% off from the price of BC900), it is still a good buy. But as it is right now, I recommend getting its older brother instead.

BC900 is a better value unless you can get BC700 for $14.99 like it was a week ago (see SlickDeals)

If you could actually get if from Amazon for $37 (with FS). The best price I actually see is Thomas Distributing, for $39 plus about $8 shipping...

what's the difference between the two? just that the 900 fits D and C cells?

The 900 does not charge C or D cells only AA and AAA. It can charge at faster rates than the 700 and also comes with the C and D adapters, 4 AAs and 4 AAAs. Of course it is currently out of stock at Amazon. At $36.99 it would be the better value than the 700.

The BC-700 is a better option at this price. The high-current battery-killing charging modes are not the reason you buy these smart chargers anyways, and the batteries that come with the BC-900 are fairly poor in quality.

I can't comment on the quality of batteries that you get with the BC-900 but I would not consider the BC-900 to be a "high-current battery-killing" charger. Rapid charging can be detrimental to battery life but using a "smart" charger like the Lacrosse is a better option than using a dumb slow charger that comes bundled with most rechargeable batteries. Using the Lacrosse at the highest charge rate shouldn't harm today's modern batteries and could even be used to revive old batteries by conditioning them. The BC-900 can charge most batteries safely at even the highest charge rate and I wouldn't hesitate to charge any of my batteries with it.

I think the BC-700 is a fine charger, but at the prices available when the OP posted this I still believe the 900 is the better option.

By the way, the BC-700 is now at $32.99 and the BC-900 is back in stock at $36.99. The current pricing definitely favors the BC-900.

Where do you see the BC-900 in stock? I don't see it at the Amazon link from the OP.

I didn't see the 3 to 5 weeks. That is quite lengthy. It is, however, available to order from Amazon and qualifies for free Super Saver shipping. If you can wait 3 to 5 weeks, it is a good deal and a better value than the BC-700 at current pricing.
