$209.99

Not the hottest deal in the world when we had $230-250 GTX970/390 cards but in today's market with $190-200 GTX960 4GB, it's one of the best mid-range card for someone who cannot afford to step up to the GTX970/390 at $280+. (*** R9 280X for $184 is also a good deal for someone who cannot stretch it to $200 ***)

Amex users, there is also a $25 off $200 that you can use on this deal...log into the Amex site, and find the promotion, then click on it.

so stuck here waiting for a hot deal on either this or 970 for stepson for Christmas. Haven't seen much in this price range the last week or so. IIRC, it's after the holidays when we start to see better gpu deals?

I dunno, I am betting we will see some more GPU deals before & after Xmas.
What card do they got now?

Ya, that would be real slick. Does that AMEX $25 off $200 Promo still work?

Spend a total of $200 or more at Newegg or Flash.Newegg.com by 12/31/15 and receive a $25 Statement Credit.

Reading online it seems some posters stated as of early December that AMEX offer is maxed out/expired:
http://slickdeals.net/f/8208329-ame...it-w-qualifying-amex-card?page=20#commentsBox

also a $10 rebate on this card

Thank you! Updated the OP.

He has a 560 and wanting to play Assassins Creed at 1080p

What's the CPU and PSU of the system?

Looks like you have to have signed up for it before (so it won't be listed on the promo page on the Amex site), but it still expires on 12/31/15.

It has an X6 and a thermaltake 700W PSU

Your PSU is fine but your CPU is a major bottleneck. I'd recommend looking at used GTX670/760/680/770 or HD7950/7970 cards. If you want new, I'd look at GTX950/960. That system really needs a CPU upgrade to take full advantage of cards faster than $170. This is probably the last graphics upgrade it can take.

Unfortunately, Assassin's Creed games are some of the worst optimized titles. A Phenom II X6 barely hits 30-33 fps and that's with 780Ti SLI (970 SLI equivalent). This means you are stuck between being both GPU limited with a 950/960/R9 380/380X and CPU limited too.

Can you quickly try the game on the X6 + GTX560 and tell us how it runs for you?

If you want an upgrade without breaking your wallet, I'd look into a $140 GTX950 or $170 GTX960.

The reason I feel bad recommending you any of the new cards is because for Assassin's Creed series with your CPU, you'd get almost the same performance with a 760/GTX670 as the GTX950 and with 680/770 what the 960 delivers.

Before you buy a new GTX950/960, see if you can message an AnandTech member moonbogg as he has 1-2 GTX670 cards. You may be able to get a very good deal on one of his cards. I would highly recommend going that route over a $140-170 GTX950/960 if you can work something out.

Excellent post, RussianSensation. This is info stepson can really use. I'll get with him and ask him to run the game. He's working 12 on 12 off right now, I'll get back with you. I have several cpu upgrades as I do DC myself. Have an FX8120 and 2600K system I may be persuaded to swap with him.

PB, let me know if you are interested in my 670's. I'll sell one or both to you for stupid cheap. I need to get rid of them while someone can still use them.
With that said, I am thinking this game is pretty insane with its requirements to get it running decently. If you bought both 670's, that would put you close to the 690 performance level. Those tests look like they were done at very high quality, which is certainly unnecessary and by lowering settings I am willing to bet a 670 or two will get some good FPS.
I do believe it is necessary to give your step son your 2600K though. I'll just come right out and say it. His CPU will not permit enjoyable gameplay in a game like we are discussing here. Let me know in a PM if you want the card or cardS.
Oh yeah, have we looked at what this game wants in terms of Vram at 1080p? I don't want you to buy new cards, at any price, and then realize you have about half as much Vram as you actually need for the game to not stutter like crazy. I don't want you to be disappointed and I don't want your step son to receive new GPUs from you as a gift and then have them not work well and then he will be unhappy but feel obligated to not say anything. This would be a terrible situation filled with sadness and can only be equated with puppies dying and babies being punched in the face. It would be that bad. Yeah so let me know ok?

The official Assassin's Creed Syndicate system requirements call for a GeForce GTX 760 with 4GB of VRAM, which will enable you to run the game at around 30 frames per second at 1920x1080, with detail levels incorporating a mix of Medium and High settings.

Yeah, no dead puppies foshizzle. Looks like it needs more vram than the 670's have. But while you're here, what do you want for them, moonbogg?

Sorry to possibly thread hijack, but I can't send a PM yet (not enough posts). I am interested in at least one if not both of those 670's if they are available. I currently have a 7850 and play LOTRO at 1080p. I believe these should help significantly but please let me know if you don't think they will.

I've bought them both, sorry.

 How are they performing relative to the 560? Was your stepson able to play Assassin's Creed games on decent settings on a single 670?

Watch sales on GTX950 or R9 270. R9 270 sometimes drops as low as $90.

An even better option if you don't mind spending a bit more is a used after-market HD7970. Once overclocked to 280X speeds, it'll outperform a 670 by 40-45% (GTX760 ~ GTX670) and it comes with 3GB of VRAM.

Still kicking around an ancient Radeon 7770 card. Was going to hold off until next black friday for a next gen card but a cheap 670 or something could have tided me over. :(

Wow, what PC games do you play @ what resolution and what are the rest of your system specs?

Your GPU is slower than Xbox 1's GPU.

Be on the look out for EVGA B-stock as sometimes they have cheap 670/680 cards.

Mostly play WoW/SWTOR and some battlefront and witcher/da. WoW and and SWTOR are passable, though I would like to up the settings. Witcher and battlefront have to run on low.

Corsair 250gb ssd
antec earthwatt 530watt psu

I keep telling myself the new GPU process is soon but a cheap stop gap inbetween would have been perfect.

I think you've gotten your full value out of that 7770. It's time for something a bit better.

If that i5 2500 is a non-K and is stock, R9 390/390X is the max GPU performance level you can upgrade to without major bottlenecking. In fact, in some modern games you aren't playing, even an i5 6600K @ 4.6Ghz is already a bottleneck for R9 390/390X level card.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3g_t_gJnavI

In games like FO4 or Assassin's Creed series, a stock 2500 would also be a major bottleneck.

With your rig, you can easily find a used HD7970Ghz or try to find a used after-market R9 290. After that, you'll have to swap that CPU or do an all new build if you intend to play future AAA games without bottlenecking a $300 level GPU. I am surprised you missed the hot deals on after-market 290 cards in 2014 and most of 2015. There is nothing out today that still comes close to those. PowerColor PCS+ 290 and Sapphire Tri-X 290 were $200 brand new around November/December 2014. It'll take another 6+ months before GTX970/R9 390 drop to $200 brand new.

As a budget upgrade, EVGA B-stock 670/760/680 could also be a great choice assuming they cost $80 or less. I've also seen GTX780Ti sell for $190-200 on EVGA B-stock. That would have been a great option as well.
