Just out of curiosity, is the budget G3258 processor better than the old Core 2 Quad?

^Unless I misread, it looks very favorable especially when you consider power consumption.

That -DS2V board doesn't have a USB 3.0 header... otherwise it's pretty good.

*sigh* I don't really need another Pentium chip and mobo... but, but, but....

The B85M also has 2 more SATA ports (4xSATA3 + 2xSATA2 vs 2xSATA3 + 2xSATA2) and HDMI.

This is exactly the deal I've been waiting for to build my first NAS. In41.

Stellar deal. I missed the deals last month, now I'm not unhappy about that. In for one, should be fun to play with. Thanks OP!

I'm in for two of these:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboD...=Combo.1816185

$79.98 for G3258, and a Gigabyte H81 mATX mobo.

Solid caps - good.
No USB3.0 front-panel header, and no HDMI - bad.
$10 board - good.

Edit: A late edit for anyone that comes across this thread. I was able to get HDMI audio out of this boards' DVI port, using an ATI DVI-to-HDMI adapter I got off of ebay for $5. So don't let the lack of HDMI sway you.

Pretty much anything these days is faster than a core 2-era CPU, even Baytrail Atom's and AMD A4's are inching up on core 2 quad's with substantially lower power consumption.

Along with 2 more RAM slots. And it's 4-phase VRM instead of 3 (unless you get v2.0 which changed it to 3).

I just put together the G3258 + GA-B85M-DS3H I got from Newegg when it was $75AR. 4.3Ghz @ 1.2v (max for this board), but that's more dependant on the chip. I have 2 G3258 from the same batch (even though purchased from different places a month apart), and both do 4.3Ghz @ 1.2v.

The Gigabyte uses 8w more at idle than an MSI B85 board though with everything else equal...can't quite figure that out, besides that Gigabyte has an extra power phase.

I'd still get the B85 one in this thread for $5 more. Same OC capability, but with HDMI, 2 more SATA3 ports, 2 more RAM slots, 4-phase VRM instead of 3, and a USB 3.0 header.

Good point

Dont look at the benchmarks comparing C2Q vs an overclocked G3258. Not only does the G3258 totally wreck a C2Q, it also wrecks a nehalem i5. I "upgraded" from a 3GHz i5-750 to a 4.5GHz G3258, and it is faster in almost every way. The only time it is slower is when I'm running a whole bunch of stuff. It is worth a little sluggishness in those rare moments because most of the time it absolutely flies.
