Beware of coil whine. I had to RMA a unit due to high pitched whine while operating idle and load. Many others have reported the same.

Well, I got mine in and low and behold, horrible coil whine. It's noticeable with the PSU just plugged in and on with no cables attached, and really bad with the PSU not plugged into the system but turned on with a jumper.

I created RMAs with both Newegg and Corsair, and both of them required I ship it back to them on my dime. Considering that the cost of shipping would be the same as what I paid for it, it hardly seems worth it.

I think I've isolated the problem, so I'm going to pot the components that seem to be causing the issue and see if that fixes my issues.

The coil whine is a hit-or-miss problem with a lot of power supplies, but seems worse with a broad swatch of Seasonic-built units.

As for the shipping cost being put on you, such is buying online, except when buying from Amazon, esp. when using Prime. In all honesty, the return ship cost and time lost to RMA's is what drives me more and more to buying from either Amazon, if time's not going to be a constraint, or from MicroCenter, if I need to be able to have a return/swap for new item the same day. And since MicroCener routinely price matches Newegg without a problem, the cost difference between NE and MC is just sales tax....something I'm more and more willing to pay to have the ability to exchange a faulty product and get a new one in just minutes, instead of days and potentially weeks lost to shipping in two directions, having NE check out the product, etc. MC just takes the old one back, no questions and I have a replacement in minutes.

^^ Good strategy, Meghan54.

I called Newegg and insisted it was defective and that I did not want to pay return shipping. They cut me a pre-paid UPS label along with waiving the restocking fee.

Well, I'm glad I didn't pay the shipping to have it RMA'd, the fix was ridiculously simple. One of the ceramic caps (C17) was producing the buzzing noise which was noticeable when only the standby rail active and unbearable when the PSU was on but unloaded.
A dollop of epoxy and the supply is now dead quiet.
