You are gonna have to re-encode the video, most likely using around half the bitrate to get it to fit on a 4.7GB disc. To me, its not worth it at all, there would be too much quality loss, and you might as well "back up" your DVD by buying a second one used or something.

Welp most likely you won't be able to keep any of those special features though. Ifoedit and ReMPEG2 are your friends. See doom9.org check out the forums and guides.
I'm gonna stick with SVCDs unless it's a really really good movie. Main reason I got dvd-burner was for mini-DV video and dvd slideshows.

wow this one bites the big one...I placed my ordered I believe October 3rd. I called them right away to continue the order. You better call them anyway cuz I gave them bogus ph # info and don't want them selling my info so I guess they had a hard time reaching me. Oh well guess it'll be around my birthday when I finally get this thing. This is what cavemen must've felt like when they were starving and the only thing to eat was a Tyranosaurus Rex around the bend.

This is total BS. Some Circuit City stores already have this drive. CompUSA has it. What is the freaking holdup? All I want is my DVD burner.

You sound as though you never bought anything from Dell before? Going into this deal, Im sure most people had a feeling it wasn't going to get here on time (even though we were hoping it would). That's the tradeoff- save $100 and wait for Dell or pay retail and get it once it comes out. In my opinion, I thought it was worth the wait so I ordered. Dell has always been like this - radeon8500, z560s, etc.

My Dell purchases have been either systems, servers, or monitors, I haven't bought stuff like this from them before. Seems a crappy way to do business, but oh well. I think I'll probably cancel.

Edit: Also wanted to say to those complaining about prices of DVD blanks, these things hold about 7X as much data as a CDR so if you figure that CDRs go for about 15 cents each, then $1 for a DVDR is about an equivalent deal. And some folks have pointed out where you can get them for less than $1 each in bulk. So actually DVDRs are already as cheap or cheaper than CDRs when you consider the cost per storage space.

So considering the prices of floppies, should I be happy paying $50 for a blank CD-R?

We are going to get this unit in about a week or so, including myself, I am still looking for 4x Media, nobody is talking about it , or is it that there is no 4x Media in the market?
DVD -R and DVD +RW ?
Would 1X speed work with it?
Can anyone knowledgeable about media give some tips and maybe some place we could buy 4X media ahead of time?
please don't say Ebay!..

@RyanO read my post in this thread 10/09/2002 6:53 PM it has a link to 4X DVD-R media. Cheapest price still seems to be around $340. $100 is nothing to sneeze at. Man this reminds me of the gateway ti4400 I got for $235.

i remember recently seeing some pics of some 4x dvd-r media from TDK at some show/conference in Japan. How long it takes to hit the market I don;t know, but look for TDK if you are hunting.

Don't be in too big of a hurry... from what I've read around a lot of the software packages don't yet support this drive.

It comes with RecordNow, but I like RecordNow MAX (which I hear doesn't work). Nero is said to work but I've had problems burning Xbox backups with Nero on DVD-R's.

The link in your previous post about 4x media is dead.

Mr. Bass, this excellent price on supposedly 4x media seems very odd. So far as I can tell none of the major disc mfg are shipping 4x media yet. Why would a generic disk be first, and at a budget price.

My 2x player recorder will only record 2x on media that has been tested by Pioneer, and programed into its bios. Do you think it likely that this generic product has already been tested by Sony and programmed so that it will work at 4x?

If anyone has tries this media with the Sony and can confirm the write speed I would be very interested.

Man, if the delivery date wasn't so far in the future, I'd be real tempted to jump on this...

Holy crap. That better not be the delivery date for mine, I ordered when it first came up on the site. If I get one more "delayed shipping" e-mail, I'm cancelling.

Just went to best buys' They have it for $349- $50 rebate. Which is on their website in the rebate section. Upon reading the rebate it says

$50 rebate, and From Authorized Sony dealer. And not specific to bestbuys, McAllen TX's rebate. I could not find the rebate in their junk bin. And not online. But on the Price tag on the shelf.

The hot question is. IS Dell an Authorized dealer. If so. Another $50 off this drive would be sweet!!!

The only $50 DVDRW rebate I can find on Bestbuy is for the DRU120A model not the DRU500A model.

They probably put the rebate info incorrectly on 500A.

Amen, brother. I aint waiting for Santa to bring me this burner.

Mine still shows an anticipated ship date of 10/22, which is the same ship date I was told when I ordered the drive. And I certainly wasn't one of the first people to order it. Interesting... hopefully it'll actually ship at around that date!
