No, this drive won't work with the 9.4 G Dual layered discs. THOSE are expensive.
As far as copying DVD's with this type of drive, It's not necessarily that simple. It's definitely not cd-audio simple. Of course, you're just backing up your DVD that you already own... don't commit copyright infringement, etc. etc.
First of all you have to find media that your player is happy with... not too hard, and getting easier.
Second, you have to de-crypt the disc. Lots of tools out there that do this... presumably for fair use.... consult your legal advisor.
Third, you have to make sure that the DVD you want to copy is single layer (4.7gig) or less. If it's a dual layer disc, then you have to either, (a) edit out the portions that you don't want to keep -- lots of DVD authoring/editing tools out there -- such as the "extras"; or (b) completely re-author and re-compress the movie to a lower quality... time consuming and tricky, not to mention, it kind of defeats the point if you have to take too much quality out.
If you really know what you're doing, and you have a fast computer, it will take about 2-4 hours to complete the whole process.
Also, for those that don't know, the media speed is much more important/sensitive/unforgiving than CDR media. If it says 1x... you'd better burn at 1x or it's a coaster for sure.
Good luck... hope I get mine
