glad to see so many getting in on the deal. I actually almost hesitated to post it because I remembered the Radeon 8500 fiasco, etc. and I REALLY wanted to get this drive when it came out, and I feared the anandtech effect. But anandtech has been so good to me, I wanted to contribute at least a little bit. Here's to hoping we all get them the first day! Also, please post any other media deals that you find.

Just got this notice when I checked my order status:

"Currently one or more items are not available. Every effort is being made to complete your order.
Delayed 10/4/2002"

Seeing as Sony doesn't even give a shipping date if you buy direct from them, it probably won't be shipped by Friday. So much for getting it anytime soon.

Can you copy dvds straight with this? Or do you have to rip the original to you harddrive and then burn it from there?

Also do the dual layered 9.4 gig dvds work with this?

Got the confirm email saying "Estimated Ship Date: On or before Oct 04, 2002". Order status on the Dell site says "In Production", or "Your item(s) is being processed and should ship by the estimated ship date. Pending 10/4/2002" Got my fingers crossed.

Is this drive beige or silver? For all the pictures I have seen it looks silver!

From CBS MarketWatch (Last Update: 6:29 PM ET Oct. 1, 2002):
"Dell delights after-hours investors - Stocks build on a strong start to the fourth quarter
Shares of Dell Computer shot 4 percent higher on Island-leading volume after the close. The PC giant raised forecasts for its third-quarter revenue to kick off its analyst meeting in Texas.

Dell now expects to report revenue of $9.1 billion, up from previous estimates of $8.9 billion and earnings of 21 cents a share, which would be at the high end of its forecasts."

I wonder how much of this might be due to the Anandtech effect? All of us jumping on these dealies for components from Dell might just pull us out of the recession. :D

No, this drive won't work with the 9.4 G Dual layered discs. THOSE are expensive.

As far as copying DVD's with this type of drive, It's not necessarily that simple. It's definitely not cd-audio simple. Of course, you're just backing up your DVD that you already own... don't commit copyright infringement, etc. etc.

First of all you have to find media that your player is happy with... not too hard, and getting easier.

Second, you have to de-crypt the disc. Lots of tools out there that do this... presumably for fair use.... consult your legal advisor.

Third, you have to make sure that the DVD you want to copy is single layer (4.7gig) or less. If it's a dual layer disc, then you have to either, (a) edit out the portions that you don't want to keep -- lots of DVD authoring/editing tools out there -- such as the "extras"; or (b) completely re-author and re-compress the movie to a lower quality... time consuming and tricky, not to mention, it kind of defeats the point if you have to take too much quality out.

If you really know what you're doing, and you have a fast computer, it will take about 2-4 hours to complete the whole process.

Also, for those that don't know, the media speed is much more important/sensitive/unforgiving than CDR media. If it says 1x... you'd better burn at 1x or it's a coaster for sure.

Good luck... hope I get mine :)

Lucky you... my order status is now "In Process," but reports that it's currently not available... "will make every effort" blahbiddyblabla.

Fortunately I'm going out of town for a coupla weeks anyhow, so maybe, just maybe, I'll have a toy when I get back!

mine says delivery '10-7', and then delayed on the home page

media can be had very cheaply if you buy in lots of 100,

I get the GQ dvdr from Fry's, 5 for $10, work great on the a04- my advice,
don't order any until you know which ones work on this drive.
