WOW! AHEAD Software has just released Nero Burning ROM 6, right? Well, its not available for sale yet on their site, and will cost more than $100 when it is.

But if you buy (or bought) Nero 5.5 FROM THEM DIRECTLY on their site after May 1, they send you a FREE serial key upgrade to Nero 6.0, and it works on ALL the components!

Here's how you do it: Download the free Nero 5.5 demo. Install it. Then, buy the CD Serial for Nero 5.5 from the website ($49 -- which is already $20 savings off buying a CD version from them). They will send you an email (so make sure you enter it correctly) a few days later saying since you purchased 5.5 after May 1, they are giving you a serial upgrade to 6.0! So you get well over $100 in software for $49 with no shipping! I don't know how long this opportunity will last (probably only as long as 5.5 is available and 6.0 is not for sale from the site). So act quickly!

Start here:
Nero Burning Rom 5.5 (sorry. fixed it.)

EDIT 7-31: The virtue of this deal is obviously only for those with OEM components and DVD burners or a need for all the plugins that you had to either boost from Kazaa or buy from Ahead for 5.5. They are included with 6 (including the mp3 plugin). You also get a good dvd-playing utility, so there no need for for WinDVD or PowerDVD, both of which suck in my opinion -- picture is terrible and there are no good options to fix it. Anyway, its a good deal if you need 6.0, obviously, which I do. But then, what consitutes a good for a product you don't need? If you buy products you don't need just because they're on sale, well, you have bigger problems...

EDIT 2, 7-31: D'OH! Seems that this deal no longer is available. The link above now just gives you the option to pay for an existing copy of NeroMix.

nero 6 is good burning software, but just to clear up a few facts. it will be available online for sale soon.

The price of Nero 6 will be 79.99USD (boxed version) or 59.99 (download version).

and from my understanding, the retail (boxed version) is already available in stores. and if you own that version and goto Nero's site, you can update to version 6.0.0.9, which fixes a few quirks and adds Nero Rencode, a dvd-authoring program to compress home dvd's that may be too large to fit on a single dvd burnable disc.

Esquire posted this deal back on 6/19 here. Definitely worth the repost though, as this deal is probably about to expire.

I saw the retail version at Fry's a few days ago for $79.95. No ugpraders sticker -- is Ahead eventually going to offer rebates for existing customers? I can wait.

Also, does anyone know if their DVD module can decode/encode AC-3 audio? The box says they support DVD+VR, but I have other packages that do as well but they don't really handle the Dolby AC-3 audio used by the Phillips DVD+R/RW set-top boxes. MPEG-2 audio for DVDs is non-standard, and PCM audio is standard but takes up something like 1.2GB on a 2 hour DVD.

I downloaded 5.5 about a month ago. Yesterday, I received the email from Ahead giving me the serial number good for the free update. I hear that 6.0 has mucho bugs. That's probably why it's not actually available yet on their website.

At some point it will just make more sense to buy a Lite-On burner that has nero bundled with it.

How true it is.

Edit: I am hoping for a dvd burner with it bundled. I think around next summer we should start seeing the almost FAR drives.

I bought a CenDyne (Lite-On) CD burner about 6 months ago and it came with Nero. However, it was not the full version. It did not allow DVD burning. Yes, I had a DVD burner also. I think the deal is that the software only works with the drive it came with. Since it was not a DVD burner, it would not allow ANY burning on any drive. Needless to say, I was dissappointed.

I don't see much difference with Nero 6 Ultra and Nero 5.5. I'm currently using EZCD6 and Nero 6 on my burning puter, it has a Liteon 56x burner and Pioneer DVD-RW. Nero 6 seems more "fruity" than the old one and the extra tools aren't really that special. Though i hate Roxio, EZCD6 is pretty nice and quite and upgrade to the peice of trash EZ5. Nero on the otherhand is pretty polished already, though you have to play around with the expert settings all the time to get what you want, while EZ u just drag and drop, its easy....

If Nero 5.5 is working fine, then stick with it, i still using 5.5 on my main comp with my Plextor SCSI 12X

I have been using Nero 6 for a week, and to tell you the truth it is faster than 5.5, but I don't see much change except for the interface and the easier to read menus. The added DVD support would be nice if I had a DVD burner.

What new dvd functions does nero 6 offer? I just got a Pioneer 105 and am looking for some good authoring software. If the new nero has moreadvanced dvd features i might just upgrade to that.

I would figure in 6-7 weeks you will be able to pick up a OEM version of this off of the many sofware reseller sites for about 20$ US

So Ill just wait, as 5.5 dose the job allready.

Some questions about nero 6.

In 5.x if I burn a compilation and then change some files and compilation name or simply want to burn a second CD of the same compilation, I get an error saying that it needs the CD with the original compilation. So basicaly I need to create a new compilation and do everything all over again to burn another CD even if it is just a copy. The same occurs with saved compilations so saving them is useless, so I would like to dissable the would you like to save the compilation message if I close a compilation.

Also, I would like to organise the position of the files on the phisical disk to optimize speed. I was thinking a full file ordering scheme like you order tracks on an audio CD. So far only the priority in nero 5 efects the position but it is still quite limited.

Does nero 6 add or at least imrove on these features?

Thanks

Exactly what I was just thinking, all of Nero's older OEM software has had all the functionality of the commercial for sale software.

When you create a new layout you are (or the wizard is) choosing Multisession.. make sure you choose NO multisession and that way you can make multiple copies or different variations. Multisession is only valuable when you need to write part of the disc now and then part later.

think it'd be cheaper just to buy a cdrw drive that has nero 6 with it. pretty sure liteon drives would come with with nero as it always has. they'll probably upgrade it to the newest version within a month or 2.
